  1. I guess I didn't make my question clear enough. I realize verification is MUST. My issue is one of the external HD image cannot be verified. "Data Verification Failed" What may be the problem ?? Now what do I need to do ?? I have several computers that I create image for. So this particular HD has several images from different computers. All using Macrium Reflect. Images from other computers are verified and fine except for this one computer image. As I said, I created another image for this computer on second external HD which was verified fine. So question becomes (not to repeat myself but for clarification) why imgages from same computer verifies on one HD, but not the other ?? Any ideas ?? Thanks
  2. For those who use Macrium Reflect, I have a frustrating question. I have never thought about verifying the backup file until today. I make two backups (from same computer) to two separate external HDs. One backup verified OK, but other external HD backup has "Data Verification Failed" I checked with Macrium forum, but no help. Does anyone have any ideas ?? Thanks, Tiger
  3. The answer to my question maybe an obvious and simple, but let me ask them anyway. One can check the internet download/upload speed using websites like www.speedtest.com. It uses its own file and check for sending and receiving speed. What I wanted to know is how can I tell what the speed of a particular streaming video that I am watching now ?? I have used Slingbox, and it shows the real time streaming speed on lower right corner, i.e. 3214 kbps, etc.... So is there anyway to monitor/view/check the streaming video speed in real time on any sites that I am watching?? One of the reason for my curiosity is sometimes the streaming video stops then resumes. (My internet download speed is 20-30 mbps, cpu is 1.8ghz, 3gb ram, Vista, etc..) I thought I would have enough buffer and internet speed to overcome any video streaming problems, but lately I am getting more pauses then ever before. I have people in countries where internet is only 1-2 mbps or less, and much slower/older computers. They claim they are watching real time streaming without any problems. I don't want to call them liars but it's either they are dreaming or I am losing my mind !!!! I know sometimes it depends in the web sites. I noticed that even Youtube pauses sometimes. Anyway, I have given up trying to eliminate these video streaming pauses (nobody seems to know !!!), but I thought at least maybe I can view the real time speed at least !!! Thanks, Tiger
  4. Can anyone tell me exactly what does Octoshape do ?? It's an addon to flash. Does it help load and stream videos faster ?? I am always looking for faster way to view streaming videos online using Firefox or Chrome. Will Octoshape help ??
  5. Thanks Hazelnut for Blue screen discussion website. It was very helpful understanding more about blue screen. Speaking of which, I have not had a single blue screen since I post the topic few days ago...Hummmmm !!! Is this divine ???? Thanks guys..
  6. We came around full circle to my original question. Of course there MAY be something wrong when blue screen occurs. But how do I find the problems and more importantly, WHAT do I need to do ??? Do I trash the laptops and buy new ones ?? Replace HD, RAM, motherboard, etc??? Everyone says Blue screen is DEATH, yet no one can tell me NOW WHAT ??? Like I said, my laptops work just fine after reboot until the next blue screen. If I continue to use the laptops what will happen?? smoke?? HD crash?? RAM goes crazy ?? Video won't work ?? None of these happened YET. As I said, these are the mystery of PC. There are things that NOBODY REALLY knows why?? It might be a symptom, but my body works just fine, so why goto the doctor ?? They don't know either !!! Interesting !!!!
  7. Again, before I posted Blue screen topic, I have literally done all I can. It seems Bitdefender file is the problem, but I have 10s of emails from them without a solution. Blue Screen comes with or without Bitdefender. I have had few blue screen crashes with Bitdefender uninstalled. Thanks for all the possible solutions, but the point of my post is why doesn't blue screen crash causing damages to my laptop ?? Like I said, what's still puzzling me is NOTHING happened to my laptops after blue screen and reboot. IF blue screen is in fact such a MAJOR problem, then why haven't I had any problems with my laptops ??? Any ideas ???
  8. As respect to the forum, before I posted this topic I have tried most logical steps already. Virus/spyware scan/removal,, uninstall/install programs, etc.... The only consistent observation that I made for the crash is it happens during web access (I use Firefox). I cannot point to a particular website. Although two blue screens occurred during shutdown. As I said, most curious observation is after every blue screen crash, reboots fine and everything seems to work just fine. I have not had any hint of any problem what so ever. If blue screen is that bad, why haven't I had any failures ??? Especially since I have never had a single blue screen EVER until few months ago. My laptops are 3-4 yrs old, so at first I thought laptops are going bad SLOWLY..memory/HD,etc.. but so far so good.
  9. Thanks for BlueScreenView program. I tried to view C:\windows\minidump but apparently CCleaner wiped them out. But here's Stop codes from previous blue screen crash. It showed a file from Bitdefender program, dbftdif.sys. Stop 0x0000008E , 0xC0000005 0x8B676C9D 0x942AAAF4 0x00000000 I will post more stop error codes from now on. Thanks,
  10. I was just wondering !!!!! what are forum members general opinions about the significance of Blue Screen crashes ???? Many things can cause them, drivers, etc.... Personally, I have never experienced a single blue screen until few months ago. Since then, I had 10-15 blue screens between two laptops. Though a pain sometimes, I have had no other computer issues as result of the blue screen. Everything seems to work just fine after the reboot. I safe boot then normal boot. So, how critical or significant is the Blue Screen ?? It cannot be good, but is it all that bad ??? I have tried many suggested solutions for Blue screen, but it still happens. My choice is to live with it just like all other PC related crashes or issues. Let me hear some opinions !!! Thanks, Tiger
  11. Thanks for all the comments. I guess we all just have to learn to live with the streaming problem !!!!
  12. What do you mean by "obscene buffer amount" ?? Do you mean giving more MB to browser cache ?? I use Firefox and cache is at 50MB. Larger buffer makes sense but never really know how and where to set them ????? Also, does using different browser help with streaming ??? Is one faster than another ?? (I wouldn't think so) Lately, (last few months) I noticed that even loading a browser (Firefox) page takes little longer. Before it used to pop up fast, now it takes few more seconds (not complaining about few seconds, point was it's taking longer than before). Thanks,
  13. Oh, I use CCleaner religiously along with virus scan, registry cleaner etc... Basically I do pretty good maintenance on my computer. Any suggestions to stop buffering during inline streaming ??
  14. I am rather new to the forum and enjoyed the wisdom of several honest and smart people on the site. We all know that PCs are not perfect, sometimes down right frustrating. Also, there are issues with PCs that we live with everyday but have absolutely no idea why and how it works. But life goes on. This is one of those issues. It has to do with streaming videos online. I know that the quality of streaming has to with PC processing speed, RAM, and internet connection speed,, etc.... I live in USA, California where we enjoy consistent 20+mbps download and 1-2+mbps upload. 99% of my use with internet has to do with downloads. (watching movies/shows/news, etc...) I have 1.6Ghz, 3G RAM, etc...and Vista. So why is it that sometimes, I have buffering issue. In the middle of streaming, picture stops for buffering. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to ask the question. 20+mbps download is pretty fast !!!! I know it also has to do with host site upload speed. But my issue is with typical sites like Hulu, CNN, etc... major sites. There's a product called Slingbox where one can watch home cable feed via internet. I hear of people with only 1 mbps (yes one mbps) feed who says they are watching the Slingbox. I take their word, but hard to believe when I have buffering issue at 20+mbps. Sometimes I goto website to watch non USA sports games. Often pictures stop for buffering. I cannot be the only one who has this issue. Is there anything that i can set on my computer to rid of buffering issue ?? Set a side more HD or RAM space ?? Or special settings on browser (Firefox or Chrome)?? Thanks, Tiger
  15. I tried Firefox safe mode. NO black screen. So I isolated to Autocomplete Pro Add-on as the problem. Tried disable Autocomplete add-on only, and NO black screen. Then after several enable and disable tries, now NO black screen even with Autocomplete Pro enabled. (Why?? No idea!!! One of those weird Vista things ??) Thanks for your help. It was a big help. Now I have the black screen under control. Basically, I will just use Chrome to view forum sites. Tiger
  16. I attached a screen shot of black block. I am using Firefox, so I tried Google Chrome and NO block of black screen. So there is something wrong with Firefox setting (??) I use Firefox 99% of the time. This issue only started few months ago. Only change to Firefox was update to newer version (??) Any ideas ?? Thanks, Tiger
  17. Lately (last few months), I have been getting numerous blue screen crashes. It seem some sort of driver issue. One is TDI.sys (network driver) and second is bdftdif.sys (used by Bitdefender virus software). What is interesting is that after i do the safe mode and boot normally, everything works fine until the next blue screen crash. My question is if these files are supposed to be corrupted (thus the blue screen), then how came I can reboot and keep using the computer ? More importantly, (my laptops are 3 yrs old), does this (blue screen) mean that my computer is SLOWLY DYING?? Some thought mother board is getting hot ?? But same blue screen even after computer is off for a day or two. I did chkdsk and memory test. No problems found. No virus or spyware either. Any ideas ??? Thanks, Tiger
  18. Lately, I have noticed a big block of black screen when I am accessing a forum topic. This is true for Piriform site as well as other forum sites. Basically, when I click on a topic and screen changes to view the content, there is a big block of black screen at top. Does anyone have any ideas ?? I must have some sort of wrong settings on my computer. Just don't know what???? Thanks, Tiger
  19. Thanks Dennis... I figured out "Hide Protected Operating System Files" after I posted. But good to know that CCleaner will remove .tmp files. Later, Tiger
  20. I know CCleaner removes internet temp files. But it doesn't seem to remove any other types of temp files. Ex: MS Word creates temp files todo it's thing. Technically, temp files supposed to be remove at program closing. But in reality, these temp files are still left in the folder. So, few questions... How can I use CCleaner to delete these MS word temp files ?? Remember these are NOT internet temp files !!! Normally, Explore opens any folders and shows all the files. Folder option allows for hidden files to be shown. For some unknown reason??? MS Word temp files cannot be viewed in explore. Another words, I can see my Word files, but no temp files. Maybe temp files are not there at all ?? Well, I use online backup system, and it shows all the temp files and backs them up. This is how I know there are temp files left. Queston, does anyone know how to show ALL the files in any given folder??? I have Vista Thanks in advance.. Tiger
  21. All due respect to all the replies thus far, we need to step back and consider something very obvious. How things "supposed" to work and how it "actually" work is night and day sometimes. What I shared was how it "actually" worked. As I said, secure delete was an experiment for me. (it took days for the experiment) I know how MR "suppose" to work. But for some odd reasons it could not restore after secure delete. Even Macrium tech support did not have an answer. For me, it's one of those "weird" things that I am not going to spend any more time on. I moved on. I chose two partitions because that's how many there were showing by rescue CD. After secure delete, once there were two partitions and other time just one unallocated empty partition. In theory, MR is supposed to restore onto totally 000s, unallocated and empty HD. Well, it didn't work for me. I wanted to restore into both partitions as one after the restore. I made myself very clear that restore worked before secure delete and after factory settings were recovered. But the old image (before secure delete) could not be restored into secure deleted HD. Personally, this is the last posting on this matter for me. I have moved on and all the speculations have not added to solving the mystery. The fact is (for me) I will never play with secure delete. I am back to normal operation with MR, so I am satisfied. Go USA and South Korea!!! Winter Olympics and World Cup !!!
  22. We all learn from experimenting. Sometimes I get too detailed and enter into something that I have no business playing with. I am learning to keep things simple. What was funny with Macrium was that 74GB of unallocated empty was showing, but still cannot restore with older image. It would only work with newer image. As I said, even Macrium couldn't answer. But I think I can move on without knowing the answer.
  23. Good question Dennis: No I was trying to restore the image that was made from the same computer. It would only make sense that restoring images to different computers will NOT work. Each computers have there own unique settings made by each company.
  24. login123: I am glad that you are interested. Before I begin, let me simply say that please do NOT waste your time secure deleting HD then try to restore the image. Ask yourself, what are the need for secure delete?? I did it for fun and see what happens. Also, please re-read my previous replies for it will make more sense to you now. Here I we go... Vista Home Premium. OEM version that comes with Acer and Compaq laptops. Yes, restore worked BEFORE secure delete. Rescue CD then all the menus. I use Active@ KillDisk. Someone cautioned against possible conflict between DRAN and Macrium. I don't know why, but word of caution was enough. Active@ Kill disk is DOS based bootable CD. Your last question?? I am not exactly sure what you are asking, but let me try. If you mean, could I format HD after secure delete?? YES, but still could not restore. The key issue was after secure delete then format and recovery to factory settings, the older image cloud not be restored. BUT images made after formatting and factory settings was restored fine. That's where I am now. I created a new image after formatting, and all work fine. Secure deleting process did not damage the HD at all (since I was able to recover to factory settings using recovery CD that came with laptop). BUT somehow secure deleting process conflicts with the way Macrium restores which MAcrium tech support did not even address and left me in the dark. Like I said, re-read my replies and it will make more sense now. Also, don't secure delete your HD. Why ?? I am not sure how many people actually tried the entire process of making the image and actually restored the image. It's a worthy exercise, just in case ??? Also, remember to use most recent version of rescue CD (say v5.0xx (not here yet) vs v4.2xx). I found another free imaging program. Easeus Todo Bakcup 1.1. So now I have two images from two different programs. Let me know if I can help anymore !!!
  25. I tried Macrium email support. At first they were very prompt. But as the discussion got deeper, they stopped responding. Like most people, they only address what they are comfortable with, but disappear when face with persistent questions. Sad but that's life.... It was very clear that Macrium has not addressed secure deleted HD issue. But I still don't understand why completely blanked (000s) HD cannot be restored into ????? As I said, as result of my experiment, secure delete (though it sounds nice) is rarely used and I will never bother with it ever. It creates more issues. So, I am back to doing comfortable and familiar things that most people are already aware of, and try not to create new unfamiliar questions.
