  1. I had a similar experience - is the flash drive a recognised and decent make? I (foolishly now I realise) bought a couple of 'cheapies' off eBay from a Chinese seller. Exactly the same thing happened to me with these, I would copy the (mp3) files to the drives and - one minute they were there, the next minute they weren't!!
  2. I have been faithful to AVG for a number of years, but, I have to say that I'm not a big fan of v.8. It frequently fails to update - and takes ages to perform scans - it also makes the system come to a crawl whilst scanning.. I have just converted to Avira (literally just - since Sunday to be precise!) and, up to know, I am suitably impressed. Various websites sing their praises and the detection rate is one of the best - and much better than AVG. I did worry a little when I saw that it didn't have an email scanner but was comforted by various reviews stating that it wasn't strictly necessary - as all files where checked when attempting to be opened.
  3. Yes - at the moment all is well, although I'm not going to brag about it and tempt fate!! Thanks for your help on this
  4. OK - I rang Virgin and they finally mentioned the 'A' word [authentication] and said that, since the upgrade around 5% of people have had this kind of problem. The one thing they asked me to do to be ceratin was, the next time it disconnects to log in to the router - click on 'connection status' and note what it says under the 'negotiation' and 'authentication' headings. That way they can definitely say whether it's router or line problems. Just one more gripe - why has it taken 6 calls lasting a total of 2 1/2 hours before someone came up with this? Thanks again Capman.
  5. Thanks for that - I'll give it a try.
  6. Ok - I'm STILL getting an intermittent loss of connection After half a dozen (lengthy) calls to my ISP and having checked the router settings and 'them' (Virgin) doing tests their end and finding nothing amiss, 'they' now tell me it is quite 'normal' for a router to occasionally drop the connection and, only if it happens every day, can something be wrong! Can anyone confirm that this is so? Prior to their upgrade I never had a problem with dropped connection - although I was capped at 2.2mbps. I did ask that they cap the speed again but they don't seem to think that line speed is a contributory factor. I had thought about buying a new router, although this one (supplied by Virgin Media) is only around six months old, just to see if that made any difference. Any 'tecchies' out there able to give me any advice?
  7. Well, my ISP said to give it a couple of days and see how it goes before ringing them. I haven't been disconnected for around 2 days so - maybe it's been resolved, here's hoping so! Thanks again hazelnut for all your help.
  8. Now for a REALLY stupid question - and, please, don't laugh I access the internet via a wireless (Netgear) router - do I need another firewall - assuming the router acts as one in the first place? Currently I use Zone Alarm Free. This just shows the limit of my computer knowledge!
  9. The weekend came - and the connection dropped again! I called Virgin and eventually spoke to an advisor - apparently it was connected to 'the update' from a couple of weeks ago and 'something' that should have updated didn't! The advisor did something at 'his end' and took me through amending/updating some of my router settings and said that all should now be well. Thanks Hazelnut for your help in this matter - I was almost at the stage of going out and buying a new router! Oops - connections just dropped again while typing this! Grrr
  10. Thank you very much for your help - with the impending festivities I'll leave it until the weekend and, if the problem persists, I'll give my ISP a call. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
  11. Oh - just remembered, a few weeks ago the internet light wasn't lit at all for a couple of days. I tried swapping filters, unplugging all equipment connected to the phone line etc. I also tried to revert to using the old modem, but it came up with the message 'no dial tone'. After a couple of days 'normal service was resumed' and I was once again online, I then received an email from my ISP saying that my broadband speed had been successfully upgraded. When I asked them if this was the reason why I couldn't get online all they said was to ignore the email!
  12. It started yesterday - I thought about calling them but, not knowing where the fault was, I didn't want to make a fool of myself. I've just looked at their status page and it's showing the green light and no reported problems. Also my ISP - who shall remain nameless (but whose name sounds like someone with no sexual experience!!) - aren't always the most helpful.
  13. Hi - hope you can help me on this please. I occasionally lose internet access and notice that the 'internet led' on the front of the wireless router shows red - all the other leds are green. If I turn the router off - then back on again - it reverts to green and internet access is ok again, but only temporarily. Today I 'rebooted' the router but the internet led this time refused to 'go green' However, after around five minutes 'it' decided to turn green and once again I'm 'online' Can anyone point me in the direction of what is at fault (eg is it a router problem - or a telephone line problem etc etc). Thanks in anticipation
  14. And finally................... We had to create rescue disks and reinstall the entire operating system, no amount of System Restore, or help from our tecchy friend solved things!!! At least we, once again, have a clean install! Thanks once again to everyone for all their help
  15. No - on the logon screen there is my daughters' user id plus 'guest', if I click on guest it 'logs off' and returns again to the logon screen.
  16. Final update as I'm now getting really pi**ed off with the damn machine! Left in 'post Windows logon screen' mode - (you remember, it's a blank grey screen with the 'arrow' cursor), for 20 minutes and went back to switch it off using Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring the options screen up. The 'shut down' button was showing that it had downloaded some Windows updates and it's now installing them before it switches off. Does this make things any: _ a) Clearer |_| Harder |_| c) Unsure |_| d) Couldn't care less |_| Please tick one box only! And it's goodnight from me................and goodnight from him!! [Courtesy the Two Ronnies] OK they should have been tick boxes but, when posted, it all went out of alignment Grr Re: Anthony As' post - precisely where is Nortons head office - and does anybody wish to join me in a communal laptop/arse shoving excercise??!!!
  17. Thank you but, in spite of all your help, it still won't work! I successfully restored it to the restore point I created just before attempting the uninstall, but still didn't manage to get it to boot up any further. I totally agree with everyones' opinions on Norton forcing themselves on consumers. What would happen if we went to buy a new car and were told that you can only have it with lime green leather upholstery - that would soon be outlawed!!! Once again thanks for all your suggestions - looks like I'll have to get a 'techy' friend of my daughters to look at it, although he too thought that reverting to an earlier SR point should have sorted it. Ah well, here's hoping!
  18. OMG!! (HP Laptop running Windows VISTA Home Premium) I've run the Norton removal tool that you suggested and it went through all the stages and finally stated that Windows Firewall would need activating and to restart the computer. Did all that - and when restarting it went through a checkdisk routine and eventually the Windows logon screen appeared. I typed in the password and clicked 'ok' and waited - the screen then went blank with just the cursor (arrow) showing. The hard drive light lit and then flickered for a while - then NOTHING!! By pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del the various options appeared (Switch User, Log Off etc etc) and I selected the Task manager - which appeared but didn't really tell me anything I could understand! After 20 minutes, by which time it still hadn't started up, I decided to switch it off and am now in my daughters' bad books - she doesn't have a working computer. IT WONT WORK - HELP!
  19. My daughter bought a laptop with Norton Anti-virus pre-installed, when the licence expired I installed AVG8 for her - I've used AVG for ages and always liked it. When I tried to install it a message appeared saying that it was inadvisable to run 2 AV programs together. I tried uninstalling Norton - NIGHTMARE!! - you need to create an account, get a registration number, follow all steps........ blah blah blah.....................!! Tried using the CCleaner uninstaller, the process just froze after a few minutes and said Norton uninstall had been unsuccessful! The only thing I could do was to delete the start-up entry for Norton and then install AVG, which seems to have worked. This is fine but is only a work-around, surely there must be a simpler way of uninstalling Norton? Anyone out there got a fix, or does she have to 'live with it'?
  20. Thank you again or all of your help - I'll be going with option 2
  21. Right - following my previous topic [and many thanks to everyone that replied, for their help] whereby I had problems with a couple of flash drives (now resolved, I've returned them to the seller and got a refund!) - I am left with 4 options, regarding the storage of my 20GB worth of music files: Option 1: Buy another 20GB (ish) flash drive Option2: Buy a USB powered external hard drive Option 3: Upgrade my existing 37gb internal hard drive Option 4: Put the music files onto my existing 37.2GB internal hard drive My current specs are: Compaq Evo N620c Notebook Hard Drive capacity 37.2GB, with 22.4GB free space Windows XP (SP3) Intel Pentium M Processor 1.0GB RAM Any advice would be most welcome - particularly regarding option 4 (Loading files onto the existing drive) - would this adversely affect the computers performance? Someone (supposedly 'in the trade') said "yes but not catastrophically", which wasn't very helpful!
  22. Yes, it works fine for me - although the first time I tried it I didn't realise that CCleaner would only show in the system tray
  23. I've only had them for a couple of weeks - it's just that: 1. I wanted to make sure it was the drives that were faulty and it wasn't down to 'operator error'! 2. The cost of shipping them back to China makes it an unattractive option - they only cost me ?11.51 and ?7.00 I have formatted them and done a checkdisk, with no problems/bad sectors on either drive. Someone told me that, although they are advertised as xxGB, they really aren't designed to store large individual files and that I would be better off buying an external hard drive?
