  1. I'm having trouble since installing the latest version (4.4) - it won't run/open (even when I try to 'run as administrator'). After clicking the desktop shortcut, I get the UAC permission window, but, when clicking 'Continue' - nothing happens (other than a quick flicker of the HDD light)! :o

I've uninstalled and done a clean install of both version 4.3 and 4.4 - problem still exists! Looked here:- http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=285220 and other people are obviously experiencing similar problems - but no solution has yet been found.

    I am running:

    Vista Home Basic 32bit SP2,

    Windows Firewall

    Microsoft Security Essentials,

Malwarebytes v1.46 (Realtime protection NOT enabled),

    Spywareblaster v4.4

    Ccleaner v3.00.1303

No new software installed - just upgrades (AdobeAIR/Mozilla Firefox v3.6.12 & Thunderbird v3.1/Windows Updates

First noticed inability to open Spywareblaster on 29/10/2010.

If it helps here are the programs that run at startup:

  3. Hi,

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 running Windows Vista Basic 32bit - SP2 and have Battery Monitor, Windows Live Mail & Firefox load at startup and have the following intermittent 'problem'.

The desktop loads and occasionally an error message stating that 'Windows Explorer has stopped working' appears - this is then replaced by a message that 'Windows Explorer is restarting', and all is well.

I looked at various sites and have so far failed to find a solution - I did the recommended 'sfc scannow' which, when finished, stated that there were corrupt files - when I tried to open the folders to view the corrupt files it said 'Access denied'.

I have also done an anti-virus scan and also scanned with AdAware and MalwareBytes - all of which didn't find anything.

I don't lose any functionality but it is just annoying.

    Can anyone help please?

Update - I have re-run sfc /scannow and followed these instructions to find which file couldn't be repaired (web address: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-uk):

To determine which files could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt.

    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

findstr /C:"[sR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

Note The Sfcdetails.txt file contains details from every time that the System File Checker tool has been run on the computer. The file includes information about files that were not repaired by the System File Checker tool. Verify the date and time entries to determine the problem files that were found the last time that you ran the System File Checker tool.

    3. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    edit sfcdetails.txt

The Sfcdetails.txt file uses the following format:

    Date/Time SFC detail

Unfortunately, I type the command at option 2 and it doesn't 'do' anything (eg it doesn't bring any results up).

  4. i don't know, why are you having so many problems downloading ccleaner? ........lol

from that reply there is not a great deal any one can answer or help you to resolve this issue.

Can you give some details to why you are having problems?????

    Failed download

    failed install

    failed something or what ever

your os and browser type can also help

Obviously you're having trouble with your crystal ball!! B)

  5. Firstly have you ever tried using paragraphs when moaning about something that is given to you for free?

I said "weekly" as an exaggeration because it is asked a lot.

We have no right to demand piriform answer this, it is freeware. And you have no right to pester them for an answer like this. If you don't like the fact piriform have not yet answered then don't post here.

It's like kicking a wall moaning it hurts but continue doing it.

If you was a concerned person regarding this software you would not care how it was installed but it's functionality. The fact it takes less then 30 seconds to up date is laughable when you sit here and moan about some thing that is offered to you for free.

Has it ever registered in your pea brain that the reason they include the tool bar is not so they can differ the money back into ccleaner, but to make a living??

I have nothing else further to say on your ungrateful self, If a mod does not like what i have said i am sorry, but this is a joke

Hear hear! How ungrateful can someone be when it's all for free anyway! I hope he gets banned as he is obviously a complete waste of space.

  6. Perhaps you could use the ie tab extension to view the page in ie and then set it to always view it in ie.

Thanks for that info - although, at the moment, I'm trying out Google Chrome as my default browser to see how it compares. ;)

  7. I have used Firefox as my sole web browser for a long time now, and the only problem I have previously encountered is where I cannot upload a photo when selling an item on eBay.

However, I have now updated to v3.6 and have the following additional problems:

    1. eBay - occasionally, when I click on an action button, it comes up with an error page stating that the system is unavailable.

    2. Royal Mail site - when using 'Postcode Finder' the 'security code' box (eg 'type the digits as shown') does not work correctly. No matter how many times I input the correct characters it says I have to retry.

Both the above problems have been solved by using Google Chrome. ;)

Have they 'done something' untoward with Firefox?

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

  8. I do know that you can click the area between the URL and the Search bar and drag it left and right to resize both of them. So I feel like if you move the URL to the left, the Search bar will come with it. So I'm not sure if that will help you in any way.

    AJ

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately I am trying to clear the area - rather than resize the URL bar and have it replaced by something else.

  9. I am running Windows Vista and Firefox v3.6 and I wish to reduce the size of the URL/Location/Address bar as, at present, it is flexible and is currently enormous and masks the picture on my chosen 'persona'!

I have visited this website: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/529151?s=re%20size%20address%20location%20bar and followed (hopefully) the instructions, but nothing happens - the URL box is still the same size no matter what size parameters I input. I realise that the instructions are for FF v3.5.6, and wonder if that's why - or is it me doing something wrong?

I've gone to %APPDATA% and located ...... "myusername"\appdata\roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles\p9v71983.default\chrome\ ..... and created the userchrome.css file and typed in "#urlbar, #urlbar-container {min-width: 400px !important; max-width: 400px !important;}", saved the file and restarted Firefox - but nothing changes!

Am I not typing in something I should - or vice versa?

    As you can tell I am 'non-tecchie' ! :o

    Hoping you can help

  10. I used to use Avast! as my preferred anti-virus until MSE came along, when I uninstalled Avast! & subsequently installed MSE.

Overall I am pleased with it, but I have one niggle - occasionally, and for no apparent reason, on boot up of my laptop MSE shows as a red icon in the system tray and warns that I am not protected. When I open MSE and click on the 'Start' button nothing happens, although if I click on update it will not only update the definitions file but will also 'start' the application.

However, last night 'it' happened again and no amount of updating, or clicking 'start', would coax the icon to turn green. I restarted the laptop and everything was fine

My wife has a similar laptop with an almost identical set up to mine and has none of these problems with MSE

Any ideas/suggestions would be gratefully received!

  11. Having got fed up with not spotting the low battery warning flag on my laptop and losing work etc etc  , I searched for a workaround.

Apparently the lack of an audible warning in Vista is an Operating System problem and someone has come up with this piece of software:

    http://batteryalarm.codeplex.com/

    You can configure it to:

    1. warn you with any .wav sound file

    2. choose the point at which it warns you - eg 5% charge, 10% charge etc etc

    3. choose how frequently to repeat the warning - as per the 'snooze' facility on an alarm clock

It doesn't start-up automatically, so I just copied a shortcut in to the start menu folder - works fine for me ;)

  12. Hope things go much more smoothly with your new provider.

As far as getting a wavier on the fee try making an official complaint for the lack of service... it may go nowhere, but depending on the termination charge it might be worth a shot.

So far so good with the new provider (BT) - no disconnections so far!! Told VirginMedia that surely this proves it was their router that was at fault, but still they won't budge from charging me the fee. Mustn't grumble too much as:

    a) I'm in credit so it won't actually 'cost' me any more cash

    B) At least they refunded me the c?113 that BT charged for their visit - VM did admit they hadn't followed correct procedure.

  13. Yes - at the moment all is well, although I'm not going to brag about it and tempt fate!!

Thanks for your help on this <_<

After numerous phone calls to VM, I've finally had enough - cancelled my contract and gone with BT! Wrote to VM Customer Service asking them to waive disconnection fee (10 days short of my 12 month upgrade) - got a reply stating that according to their records I have only had minor problems which they deem acceptable - not prepared to waive the fee - WHAT A JOKE!!

Looks like they deem dropped connections every 3 or 4 days - and sometimes 2 or 3 times a day 'normal'!!

  14. VM shouldn't of told you to phone BT to report a fault, because you could of got charged if no fault was found, it was VM's responsibility to report the fault.

Oh well, I'm not being much help am I, lol.

No but, as the old BT advert used to say "It's good to talk!"

  15. Oh wow, yet with me they kept trying to tell me it was the routers at fault, but I wouldn't have it because it seemed impossible that 3 of them could be faulty.

I think it was possibly an incompatibility problem with Belkin routers and Virgin now, although I don't know how. Besides I have set up loads of Belkin routers for people that are Virgin customers and they haven't had problems.

    What make is your router?

Maybe it would be worth buying another router from somewhere like Argos, at least then if it cures it then all will be good, but if it don't cure it you can take advantage of Argos's 16 day money back guarantee.

    It's a Netgear router.

VM did call me to say there was an earth fault on the line and they had me disconnect everything whilst they repeated the test - it still showed faulty. VM advised me to call BT and report the fault and get them to come out to it.

BT came out the next day - no fault found!! Although the BT engineer couldn't connect to the internet and said there was a fault between my local exchange and a junction box around half a mile from where I live. He also said that it should have been VM that reported the fault and they should not have asked me to report it!

I contacted VM and they got a BT engineer to 'do something' at the exchange - it still hasn't cured it.

I do find that VM staff are really keen to close incidents as quick as they can - they ring me to see if it's ok and, when I tell them it's intermittent and may not re-occur for a few days, they say they'll close the incident and for me to give them a call if it happens again!

  16. Well kaybee, since you last posted about your troubles with Virgin, and I tried helping you, I suffered really bad problems regarding losing my connection, some days I would be lucky if I had the internet for an hour, other days I might be lucky and have it for 5 or 6 hours.

I was constantly on the phone to Virgin trying to get it sorted, I tried 3 different Belkin routers (2 were old, one was brand new), changed all my filters, went through the same routine with the support staff over and over again, they had me running all over the house trying the router in different phone sockets, but nothing ever worked.

In the end I gave up and started reading up on other ISP's (when I was lucky enough to get connected), I couldn't decide who I wanted to go with. Unbeknown to me they were still trying at their end to sort things out though, possibly even looking at their log of my internet activity, because they did something I never expected. They called me on my mobile whilst I was at work one day and asked if they could send me a new router to see if that would cure things. Of course I said yes, next day a Netgear router turned up, the problem remained a little bit so I called them up, they had me change a few settings in the router and for the most part everything is fine these days.

They were not obliged to send me a router, because that was never part of the contract in the first place, years ago when I upgraded to broadband with them they supplied me with a modem, it was down to me to change to a router when I decided to get all the computers in the house connected.

Anyway, on the odd occasion that I do lose the connection now, I just go into the router configuration page, restart the router and everything is fine.

I know this is not answering your question about O2, but just thought I would share my experience, maybe you should push for a new router from them.

Thanks for that Capman - I have, on a number of occasions, asked them to send me a new router. I even offered to return it at my expense if it didn't resolve the issue. VM continue to maintain that it isn't the router that's at fault.

  17. After 3 months of having the same problem with intermittently losing internet connection, I am now totally fed up with my current ISP - who shall remain nameless (OK you twisted my arm - it's VirginMedia aarrgghhhh!!). Their customer service and commitment is cr@p and they are just not interested in getting things sorted.

I am looking to change my ISP when my contract expires in July and, looking at all the reviews/cost comparisons etc etc, O2 Home Broadband seems to come out pretty good. There are several reviews that state slow speed/dropped connections, but, when you consider that the people most likely to write a review are the ones that have a bad experience (plus VirginMedia also have worse review scores) I tend to take them with a pinch of salt.

I am now looking for fellow Forum Members' views on their thoughts of O2 as an ISP (Home version NOT Mobile) - or can you recommend a better ISP?

  18. Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

On my 60GB External Hard Drive I have a 19GB Folder which contains around 360 sub-folders which in turn contains around 4,900 music files (both mp3 & wma).

I have bought a 40GB External Hard Drive (to keep back-up copies of these files) and I have copied the files onto my desktop (in 2 'chunks' as my laptop drive is too small to copy them all on) and in turn copied them on to the new External drive.

Now for my question - after copying is completed, why, on the 'new' drive does it show the correct number of folders and overall size, but, around 200 files short?

  19. Sounds like it could either be AntiVir 9 or IE8. As mentioned here, IE8 was slowing down 1984's machine. I installed both AntiVir 9 and IE8 at the same time, so I'm not sure which is slowing the computer down. Whatever it is, I need to nail it down because now Firefox is taking a full 3 minutes to open!

I think it may be IE8 that is slowing things up. I upgraded to AntiVir 9 around a week ago and noticed no difference at all, however I upgraded to IE8 a couple of days ago - just out of interest as I use FF3 - and my system has slowed down since then.

  20. Uninstall Nod32 completely and then install Avira.

Compare the 2 and then decide which one suits your system best.

I agree with Hazelnut - I am a recent convert from AVG to Avira, and I love it!

Much faster than AVG and takes up less resource. The only negatives for me were:

    1) the annoying daily 'nag' screen, this only took a bit of surfing the web to find a workaround.

    2) the fact that, every time a suspicious file was found, it would stop scanning until you actioned it. This has now been fixed on version 9.
