  1. The original post was about so many updates almost daily. Would you consider it acceptable if you were only given anti-virus updates every 6 months by ISO ? On dial-up I understand the issue - my friend is still (gasp) on dial-up and is constantly being killed with updates. (i think he's still downloading updates 4 Windows 3.1 lol !)
  2. Call me naive but I'm pretty sure plain-text files can't actually do anything (unless they are stealth-renamed .exe ones) Or html? (yea, scripts - I know, but other than that ...?) and as for number 7 - russian roulette for surfers ! lol Passes the day at work
  3. It can be re-sized by using chkdsk c: /L:<size> (size in bytes, I guess) Not sure if you can reduce it tho - might be for increasing only. Worth trying it anyway.
  4. I'm thinking 65536KB must be the max size for all. I've a 250Gb drive, and it reports 65536 also.
  5. Or, ... Never Burn a Pet Dog
  6. Just delete the lot ! Quite frankley, I've cleared out my prefetch folders (and many more folders) evey boot and it has made absolutely sod-all difference - ever. Although I can't count in milli-seconds so I might have sped up by .05 seconds ....
  7. Curiosity got the better of me once, and using only brute force and a philips screwdriver I demolished a HD. Amazing the technology that is in them, and how (almost) indestructable the discs are. I was not expecting a solid material (for some reason I was thinking floppy-like !), and especially that it feels like glass... delicate but strong. But they don't seem to break by bending them ... but, just like glass they will melt in a fire. (well I was sure I couldn't put it in a recycle bin lol )
  8. Redundancy, I guess. Making sure their software will work with older machines. Although I doubt games like Doom would use squiggles
  9. Ah well, in 50 billion years the sun will have expanded (as all stars do) so much as to have cremated the inner planets - including us - before after a few more million years going super-nova and taking the other planets with it ... so it's all just a waste of time anyway...!
  10. First I wanna mention I'm no expert (or even quite knowledgable!) but what info I have gained does make me think twice... The 'hockey-stick effect' shows that over the last 150 years (since industrialism) we have significantly increased the ambient temp. of the world, (about 5c?) BUT it also shows that the temp. has fluctuated between mini ice-ages (such as around 16th century) and heatwaves (such as within next 50 years) I personally put this down to the orbit around the sun, combined with the earth's 'wobble' means every x years we are y miles away/closer - so we will fluctuate temps, but we do have to keep our sun-roof (ozone). Not sure, but is that what has been said as 'Global-Dulling' ? Anyway, am I gonna be here to give a monkeys :-p B.
  11. Having done the above steps, I realised I couldn't actually reply lol ! Anyway, back on my own comp, I have now accomplished the following; 1. Solved the space-bar problem (thanks rridgely) 2. Annoyed my brother no-end and, 3. Like all good brothers, successfully blamed my sister ! Result.
  12. Brilliant - on-screen keyboard is spot-on (as long as u don't have a crap mouse too) Thank-you !
  13. This.keyboard.is.heading.towards.the.bin..At.least.it.would.if.it.was.mine.. If.you.haven't.guessed.the.space-bar.is.broke.! It's.my.brothers,.and.his.one-word.google.searches.may.suit.him,.but.I.can't.cope..(yes,.I.could.buy.a.new.k'board.but.it's.not.my.comp.) Anyway,.does.anyone.know.off.a.keyboard.shortcut.that.replicates.a.space.?(oh,.the.left.ctrl-key.is.also.defunct..!!!) Ta, B.
  14. Hmm, while we're on the subject ..... I was away from my machine for some time (couple of weeeks) , I came back expecting quite a bit of updating (inc. MS defender) - all went okay, so I thought, but MS defender did not (apparently) update. And to this day it shows an exclamation mark in the toolbar. If I open it up, it says It has not been updated in x days (increases as we speak). Forcing it to update manually has no effect. It still complains (@ toolbar) always. (Even tho after manual update it says it is up-to-date) I use auto / manual update & windows update - it still says the engine definitions are out of date .... what to do ?? (freaking MS) Any ideas ? Thanks, B
  15. I know I'm not an American, but I have kinda noticed that when a 'proposal' from Capitol Hill is drafted (made public knowledge) it usually is 'an admission of guilt' or, 'have been doing it for many years' (bit like our own government)
  16. The fact that someone even bothered to make a website about it ... sheesh :-) What's next - the how-to's of Elastoplast ?
  17. krit, I think this should be pinned (tho I didn't read it all - lol)
  18. I just bought on of these for fun, and it is a fantastic toy. It can tell me how to get to all the places I already know ! It even knows where my Mum lives - freaky :-) Anyway, is anyone an expert/user on these PDA thingies (can I use CCleaner on it ?) (and a good link to free PDA software would be nice) Oh, and an alternative to this MS ActiveSync (Koi-Karp) rubbish. Thanks, B.

I finally decided i could be bothered doing this purely cos I love this shot and it should be shared It's one for Andavari, I think ! (and no, it's not the infamous 2005 GP - it's 2004) Oh, and I've just seen a program challenge Schumacher against an F1 fighter plane (he lost, but only after it had taken off !) 30 seconds to travel 1km - ooooo !
  20. HANS - Head And Neck .... what ? (wrong room, but who cares) SAFETY ? Oh, I hate acronyms.
  21. Are u nuts ? VB questions on the beginners guide ... just a joke ... B.
  22. going back to the fingerprint thing ...what happens if you damage your fingerprint ...? Say I register my perfectly good fingerpint, and then have an accident - which I have done, as I'm sure some of us have done (I partially choped the top off my finger - yes, off !) So now, I'm wiped. My fingerprint is screwed, but I gotta live my life, so .... My so-called fingerprint ATM machine, grocery store, etc. no longer registers my 'half' fingerprint. My bank gives me nothing, my identity does not exist anymore ... Jeez, every machine doesn't register my fingerprint ... what if I was abroad? (and the same goes for retina scans - cept it increases to a 50% chance of going wrong) And, yes, I know we all have 10 fingers (most of us) so we could record 10 fingerprints, but surely that would be x10 the effort ? See, I don't think like the government
  23. i wonder would it be an idea to get this link pinned, as there seems to be a few posts with this problem. Afterall, most people don't realise this program needs VB runtimes (which usually come with MS but can get corrupted/removed) [it could be added to the download, but it would bloat it, so I'm not going there .... ]
  24. If you've a lot of programs running, temp files get removed (and created) all the time. It could be possible that in the short space between 'analyzing' and 'cleaning' that these files may have been cleared. Wait until your harddrive has stopped chugging before running CC and see if that makes a difference. I know thats not the answer you want, but it's the only one I can think of at the moment. B.
  25. I haven't actually tried CCleaner on a limited account, but it is my belief that you need admin rights to modify the registry (deleting the index files requires registry modification), so I would assume this may be the reason why your limited accounts fail to delete the index files. You are aware that the index.dat files are ALL recreated at boot time even if they have been deleted previously ? Check the contents of each index file (see if it has much content), and specifically check the creation date (should be around the time of boot). If you are still unsure as to whether these files are being (going to be deleted), run CCleaner, and check the following registry entry (if you are unsure about checking the registry, just ask - someone should be able to help) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager, look for a key (on the right hand side) called PendingFileRenameOperations. Double click on it, and the value data should look something like ... \??\C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\TEMPOR~1\Content.IE5\index.dat \??\C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\Cookies\index.dat \??\C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1\LOCALS~1\History\History.IE5\index.dat these 3 entries WILL be deleted (and recreated) at reboot. Hope this helps, B.
