  1. There was once a law called 'freedom of speech' - nowadays with the online community this seems to no longer apply (after all we are no longer 'speaking' !), therefore searching for 'bomb stuff' etc, can get you arrested (!) but if you spoke about it in the street you cannot get arrested (!?) *** I am not a lawyer or law-type person so I don't know the in's-&-out's of it, but I do think a 'freedom of thought' (which was always assumed) should be implemented for net searches. For example, going back to the original query - I can walk into any library and do hours of research on 'the b-word' and not get arrested, but if I do the same using search engines ... *** unless you are a radical (are free radical's not good for your skin!?)
  2. I don't see the risk of crashing my car, but I have insurance anyway ... just in case. You could drive your car all your life without ever denting a panel. Does buying insurance make car drivers paranoid ? I think that's a good enough analogy
  3. Seems to be the norm - I was attacked and very badly injured some years ago, but yet at the time I was expected to travel across the country to 1 of 2 victim support centres, whilst the b*stards who did that where shipped (at tax payers expense!) from solicitor to their home to solicitor within about a five mile radius ! It's no wonder the saying 'Crime Pays' originated !
  4. Nascar may be fun, and if I was honest - if I was stuck in America for a few days, I may watch it. But,... F1 is the only sport that matters I have been dreaming of the restart of the season - (can't wait till Silverstine cos I'll be there !!) Still undecided whether Honda are taking the p**s or making a change...
  5. I'm proud to say I have never beend infected - bar my workd fiasco (see my other post) Not that I am squeaky-clean, but thanks to the input of guys like yourselves, myself and my babies (my m/c's) have survived practically untouched. For that I thank you, cos in the early days of (pre-2002/3 ish) many ppl fell at the first hurdle - the odd-deleted-email and self-sense saved me from many a nasty end (many of my friends had dead machines as a result)
  6. If you go to Tools | Account Settings and for the account that you do not want to recieve mail, uncheck the 'Check for messages every X minutes' If this is unchecked it will not check for mail.
  7. I started a new job 'bout 6 months ago, and immediately I noticed the McAfee 'V' shield in the toolbar - eech! But anyway, corporate policy and all that .. who was I to argue as a new employee. I put up with it for a while, but after numerous virus hits (through a so-called corporate firewall !??!?) - msiupdate32.exe to name but one ! I had enough of a f***in' virus that can shut down my (so-called) anti-virus software and infect me (and my colleagues through my network shares), I installed Avira AntiVir (my trusted & highly recomended AV software [since dumping another bloater - Norton]) - I'm now probably facing getting fired for installing external software - but yea, i've got my counter-suit ready But I could not work with the crap that it was letting through - although on the plus side McAdidly-dee did tell me about certain viruses soon ('bout 1hr) after anything else spotted them (and only if I managed to get it restarted - version 8.5 does not seem to allow manual restart) That said I think I may have salvaged my job after another 5+ machines died & I had saved mine using a combination of Avira / HijackThis / safe-mode ! Think it is the first time I may ever got a freeware tool mentioned in a board-meeting !

    stand by stuck

The Num Lock / Caps Lock keys are low-level operations and never (appear) to be affected by windows-crashes / locks etc. They will 'almost' always work (for some reason - I have no clue why; maybe Dos related ...another topic) If they do appear to work there is a slight possiblity that windows will come back to life (usually highly unlikely) - if, however, said buttons refuse to work at all ....then u may as well power-off (ideally you will have XP and above !)
  9. when has mickeysoft allowed you to download entire operating systems anyhow? Or am I really missing something?
  10. It's not a simple question - and even it was - ask away! I am just wondering why you want to kill explorer before playing games? Most games allocate appropriate resources anyway. I can 'kinda' understand if u have a limited (low memory) machine, but there is a couple of reasons to keep explorer running anyhow. First of all - if u are playing an on-line game, disabling explorer will also disable your anti-vir & firewall etc. It will also disable any recovery system - if ur machine crashes you will loose data (and maybe more) And, I think Explorer is kinda crucial to Windows - without one u loose the other etc, etc, Having explorer running whilst u play ur game will not interfere with gameplay (in fact most game designers factor this into the design) So, have fun with your games (and yes - disable every other thing [except security stuff], but leave explorer running - just to be safe.

or use Firefox - just a suggestion

    Jkdefrag

My guess is purely physical disk head movements where the drive out - during a defrag, a disk head probably does about (don't quote me) at least a day or so's equivalent of head movement (if not more). Just my theory.
  13. Hmmm, what happens if you do something 'dubious' under system control? Can u use the excuse like sleep-induced homicide'?
  14. That's good to know - cheers. I guess I was going back to my dependancy of Norton adivising me of everything it does. (which sometimes is good, but mostly tedious - especially when telling u every port that is scanned ... ermph!!) I need to learn that not all programs yap unecessary at you like Norton (although I do like the Norton Recyle bin !) and feel secure that I do have software that works (...quietly)
  15. like this http://imgsrc.hubblesite.org/hu/db/2003/22...rmats/print.jpg wow
  16. It's a pity Microsoft have bought out Sysinternals ... such a great company - now gonna go downhill. (sigh)
  17. I've finally taken some good advice and ditched Norton. I'm now using Comodo Firewall & Avira AntiVir AV -although Norton did make its presence known, I am actually gettin used to the silence knowing that I am still protected. Anyhoo what I would like is to scan files after downloading them (like norton did-and emails too if poss.) I have Firefox with Download StatusBar which allows you to specify what AV u use after download. This worked fine with Norton, but not really with Avira. I've tried various commands, but I've only suceeded in scanning the whole m/c after every download (not v. practical) Any ideas anyone?
  18. I am fascinated by pictures like this - especially ones of Mars. Any idea where I can find more 'real' pictures like this (as apposed to generated images) ?
  19. I've just re-read your post and - eep! Let me explain, these entries in the startup menu are (for the most part) programs that run invisibly on your computer, and need to run at startup. Some programs, if you dissallow the startup of the programs (by removing threm from this menu) , then the boot-up may be unsuccessful.
  20. I would actually suggest that you remove (unistall) the program you no longer want first. If you already have, and the entry remains in the start option, then by all means try to delete it. But, remove it first through convential means (control panel / unistall) before you try to remove these entries.

    WebFldrs XP

If these are Windows files they will always show up. MS files have a habit of re-creating themselves - continually
  22. I know thia sounds obvious, but how about chucking the hard drive in the nearest river ?! They are so cheap now ! As JDPower said, try Eraser - but I don't think this will help much. Personally, i'd chuck it over the side of the Staten Island ferry lol
  23. Your hard drive does come into it too you know .... If you have a slow hd then writing to it will take time (relatively speaking in computer terms) When you boot up, quite a lot of memory is used. When that runs out, the only thing left is your swap-file (page file ? i dunno) Either way, it will get used. So if u have small memory & slow hard drive, then you've had it for slow boot-up before you start. On a modern system, 768Mg won't take long in be used up on the intial boot. It usually should get freed later.
  24. Having read a lot of reviews about alternative anti-vir, firewall software I was just curious. I've heard that removing Norton and all associates is a real ... pain. (I have Norton for my sins !) So before I commit to another anti-vir / firewall, I was hoping for some recomendations. How can I remove Norton completely (I have paid - yea, paid; d'oh - til next march, but i'm not bothered if I can get rid of it completely) - I think I do rememebr uninstalling it before, but it let loads of remnants - is there anyway to 'be-gone' it forever ? What free(-ish maybe) anti-vir / firewall would u recomend ?
