  1. Bizarre as this sounds - get them to check their Java settings ...... At work, we have had occasions when the settings of 'higher' spec graphics cards make the Java settings confuse graphic issues with lower (i.e. small jpegs / apps) images. Try disabling the Direct3d and / or OpenGL (mainly D3d usually) I honestly have no idea what or how WebTV works but if it use Java then this may be why. If it is only your avatar that is missing then I'm afraid your friends may have selective blindness and may not like u (btw daft as it sounds - it is a suggestion, so try not to slate me pls !!!) B.
  2. 'Bout 150Gb file with a not-so-fast mc, and a rather slowish ex. HD !! (believe me there is a lotta work crap that I would take great pleasure in 'losing' !)
  3. As much as the FBI et al can write sophisticated software (just look at minesweeper ), I would have thought that somehow the principal of key-loggers etc. would still be the same & spyware / AV software should detect 'some' activity ? I may be wrong, but anyway I do agree (in principal) - but only as long it is targeted to specific 'suspects' (just like phone-tapping) then Joe-Public has nothing to worry about - but if it starts getting slipped into a 'Windows Update' (for example) then ....??? (your next tax raise could be just paying for it ...!!) B.
  4. Looks cool - note the Piriform logo now ... I was wondering how long that would take
  5. Brilliant - cheers fireryone - that worked a treat. Worked a lot easier that I thought it would be. (just took a nerve-wracking 2 hours to move !) Just gotta remember to change my backup (& other) settings to point to G: !!! Thanks again ! B.
  6. yes they were ... sigh
  7. What tool are you using? I have StartUpCPL (not sure if that is correct though) ? Cheers, B.

    Weird...

I've had this a couple of times - usually when I try to hibernate .... it winges about having not enough resources (which is rubbish) and a little exclamation mark (if I remember correctly) in the task bar. (I can then only Standby - if I am lucky) I have nothing else running .... bit bizarre. B.
  9. Hello all, I was wondering if it possible to move the 'My Documents' folder (and maybe other Windows folders) to another drive? I recently bought an external hard-drive, and I just realized (even though I backup onto it) if my computer died it would be easier if it was on an external drive anyhow. Any info would be nice. Cheers for your advice. B.
  10. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying we should do nothing (anything we do do will only have an affect hundreds of years from now) What I was getting at is that suddenly 'we' are to blame and 'we' must sort it out ... 'we' have to pay more tax for using a fuel that was invented 150 years ago. The damage was done then, but it is now in the 'cleaner' age of things that we are being bullied into paying for clean-up. It is even more futile when you consider that 65% of the worlds' pollution etc. is from countries that do not want to sign-up to the Kyoto Agreement. We in Britain were told that if we did this & did that we could reduce our carbon footprint by nearly 40% - sounds good until you work out that Britain alone only contributes a total of 2% of the world emissions. 40% of 2% ain't much no matter how you look at it. Yes, if we all did something we could (eventually) clean-up this planet (but the key is 'all') What I was getting at was the 'high-and-mighty' governments that like to blame us 'minions' for polluting the planet as if it was our fault that the industrial revolution happened. I wasn't saying that we should do nothing - of course we should, but I don't want to be made as if it is my fault, and my fault alone that there is a hole in the atmosphere. Anyway, I eat cardboard - that's bound to help
  11. 4.5 million years old - give or take a few thousand years
  12. Actually, Andavari you have just reminded me of the days when you specified the bad sectors of a disc. Nowadays, everybody thinks the bad sectors are no more (not quite) - these are programmed into the drives nowadays. Anyway, not so much a worst thing that happened - just a 'worst-thing' was when if I knew I needed to use the computer, I had to start booting it 3 hours before I could use it !! B.
  13. Just curious ... why bother? These files belong to Windows ( I kjnow they are applications, as such - but they do belong to windows) I have bee trying to delete them for years, with no (permanent) luck. If you aren't using 'MSN Gaming Zone' etc., why bother delete them (especially as they are zero bytes)? B.
  14. It's broke again at the minute. Is there a point to sites like this I wonder ? Prob. not. B.

    Shift key

fraid whether you un-tick these options, hitting shift key 5+ times in a row will bring up this option. Quite ironic really as I spilt a beer over my keyboard last week, and I really do have a 'sticky' keyboard....!!! B.
  16. If your hard-drive is that slow that you notice the paging, would it not be more beneficial to buy a new HD ? I don't know your circumstances, but rather than trying to override the default behaviour of Windows apps etc. IMHO
  17. "After Dinner I Did A Sh**" - apparently
  18. It's always upsetting with the loss of life, but it always makes me smirk when everybody jumps on the 'global warming' band-wagon when a weather disaster occurs. Yes, I will admit that some 'issues' may be down to how we have destroyed our own protection (primarily from last century), but a lot has to do with natural evolution. Since time began (or at least since the earth we know evolved) the planet has been in an 'eb-and-tide' of (global) seasons. We (our ancestors) have went through heatwaves / droughts / floods / ice-cap recession / ice-cap growth (remember ice-age) over the ages, and 'that' is what we need to remember. Don't let your governments blame you & make you pay for something that you (in reality) cannot do anything about - ever, full-stop. (you know if we all stop every polluting activity today it will still take at least 200 years to make an 'adequate' impact ...! Recorded history is very short - relatively speaking - and we have not much previous experience of radical weather. After all the Earth is x million years old - and we have records for, say, 200 years ...? Hmmm, just realised I went off on a bit of a rant and a bit off subject ... sorry about that. It's still kinda relevant (I think) B.
  19. How about a pimple on that pimple ...? ... and even if you take it right back home ...
  20. Ooooh ... check's in the post, I think !
  21. If you don't want ppl to view you cam, then why not just face it against a wall? They will still be able to hear everything (as the mic is free), but they can't see anything. Or am I missing something?
  22. I don't really need more space, but I do wanna be the first (in the office at least) to have a terabyte of HD space in a personal computer (i'll just try not to think about defragging !)
  23. I've just spent the day looking on eBay for a phone I really want. I haven't bought anything yet (I have been eBaying for other low-value items for some time though without problems), but this particualr phone seems to sell on average for around ?250-?300 (retail is around ?350-?400) - anyway, I did notice quite a few ridiculously high offers like ?1,000+ !! for the same phone. Most of these users had the sense to check out the bidders history & cancel the bids if at all suspicious. It does make me think twice about selling high-value items on eBay (at least to international un-confirmed bidders) The other downside is that PayPal is all to easy to allow you claim back money (that's how these scammers steal stuff) by claiming it was not received. Best advice I can give is send only to a confirmed address if selling. If this is not possible, insure & track the item - this way you can proove to paypal that it was delivered. If buying, make sure you read the sellers feedback ratings. If a user has been on eBay for example 4 to 5 years, but has a very low rating (i.e zero or one) I would be slightly wary. Send them an email, if they are genuine they'll quite happily talk about the item. I'm not sure if this helps you make your mind up, but in my own mind I'm reluctant to give anyone ?200+ whether it's a high-street or otherwise The thing is, unless your gonna get an absolute bargain, it is probably not worth the headache for the sake of saving say ?30.
  24. Stilll ... it is a big f**ing fish. I would not wanna be in the water with it until I knew better!
