  1. Hi kroozer, Thank you so much! I followed your instructions, and there is great improvement. Now have only 2 fragmented files totaling 32 frags and now down to 28% fragmentation. These two files are still System Volume information. At Christmas I tried lots of things, and somehow got to 0% fragmentation. No clue what actually accomplished this happy state. (I had gone around in too many circles) So anyway, do you think I can get back to the 0% again?
  2. Hi Augeas, So does this explain why, after removing all but the last restore point as suggested by kroozer, and re-running Defraggler, I still have 2 System Volume Information files fragmented? These 2 files show a total of 32 fragments, and fragmentation is at 28%. Sure wish I could get rid of this. Just once, at Christmas, I got to 0% fragmentation. I tried so many procedures that I have no idea what did the trick. I realize that this topic might be more related to Defraggler forum, but using CCleaner as recommended helped, so I'm still following this thread. FYI, I'm running Win 7 Home Premium 32 and have less than 40GB used space on the C: drive. Also please note, I'm 73years young and trying really hard to understand as much as I can. Plainspeak works better for me than Geektalk Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated. Picablu
  3. A member in Defraggler forum says that the latest version of CCleaner has the capability to delete System Volume Information files. Another member used this CCleaner feature successfully to solve a problem with Defraggler showing high fragmentation percentage after defrag due to the System Volume Information files. I have this same problem. I've read all the 'how tos' and can't figure out how to remove these files with CCleaner. I've posted in the other forum asking for instructions, but no response so far. Can someone here please help?
  4. Hi anderson958. So glad I found this information. I'm running Win 7, and really like Defraggler, but have had the same problem with those pesky System Volume Information files. I've been going dizzy running around in circles trying to fix it I Just downloaded the latest version of Defraggler, but can't find the option to get rid of these files. Please provide step by step how to. Plain language (not geek-talk) is best for this granny. Sure hope you check your threads soon! I'll be anxiously waiting to for your response. Thank you in advance!
  5. Hello Dennis, I, too, have wondered if there could be a conflict with CCleaner and Registry Mechanic. Glad to have my concern cleared by your post. Just a few lines on another topic. I've been using Defraggler for several months, and wondered why I had such a high percentage of fragmentation (running right around 50% most of the time). I happened across another post that mentioned deleting old restore points could save considerable disc space. In the Windows program, I could only find a way to delete all the restore points. Then, happily, I played around in CCleaner for a bit and discovered how to delete selected points. After creating a new restore point, I deleted all the previous ones. Then I ran the Defraggler again, and VOILA!!!, I have 0% fragmentation and only half as much drive space used! It's such fun to keep learning new things. Happiest of Holidays to you and yours! 6. OK, this time I think I've found the correct way to answer your message, Dennis. The link you provide here is new to me. It has the same instructions for password reset and/or validation that I have tried before. Guess I'll just have to hope they respond. Thank you so much for trying. Picablu
  7. Hi Dennis, I hope I've remembered how to reply. I tried the link you provided on my computer. Works great! Then I installed it on Alex's computer and only the new Windows Live account shows for him. The original account was not there. When creating the new account, using the original e-mail address as an alternative was not allowed because "another account had that address", so we know it's there and just can't get into it. Thank you for your assistance. Now we have this great password finder in case there should ever be a problem again. Have a wonderful day! Picablu
  8. Hi All, I've found members of this forum to be much more helpful than any other forum I've visited. Maybe someone can provide a solution. I've tried microsoft help pages and their forum with no benefit. My Grandson forgot both password and hint for his Windows Live ID after not using it for a long time. Now he has his own home and his own computer, and wants to use the Hotmail account, but can't sign in. He sent a request for password reset, and it said "instructions have been sent to your email address". Well, Duh If you can't sign in, you can't get the instructions. Then we found a screen to fill in information to validate his identity, with the option for response to be sent to my email address instead. There has been no response. Does anyone know if there is a phone number for assistance with Windows Live ID? Alex works in the oil fields, and is away from home half the time so I take care of business, etc. for him. I have backed up everything on his computer in preparation for upgrade to Windows 7, and hope to get the Windows Live sign in issue resolved before the upgrade. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Vista

Hi there Down Under! I started this discussion because I got a new laptop just recently, and have to learn to use Vista. Seems like lots of users like it, but it's nice to know that there are others out there that agree with me.

    Vista

Hey Corona, I started this whole shebang because I search a lot. I liked XP just fine. Now this new laptop has Vista, and I'm not exactly thrilled with it. (and I miss the dog)

    Vista

Sure. You can do it in the start menu, but if you only have a word or two unique to the file you're searching for, you won't get any result!

    I heartily agree, Robbie!
  13. I'm one of the confused users. Just used Defraggler for the first time. I have several fragmented SFI files on this one month old computer. Does this explain why I have a 25% fragmentation, which seems abnormally high to me, even after defrag?
  14. That would have been nice. Just used Defraggler for the first time, had no clue what that "graph" up there was trying to tell me. Finally dug around in "Help" enough to learn about it.
  15. Hi, I'm pretty new here, but lerning a lot from other members. I used Defraggler for the first time a couple of days ago. Yours is the only message here that mentions System Volume Information. Now I understand why several of my SFI file remained fragmented.
  16. I'm pretty new here, but have been using Defraggler. I really like your thoughts on portability. I'm far from 'knowledgeable' about computers, but am learning a lot. As for automatic update, it seems to me this action would have to be programmed to run preceeding a defrag when the portable device is activated.

    Vista

It's entirely possible that I have not yet learned the correct way to search in Vista. For Instance: I want to find a document that I've saved using a word unique to that document. I type the word into the search bar and a window comes up saying no items matched my search. If I bring up Documents and type the word in that search bar, it still tells me no items matched my search even though I KNOW one of the documents contains the word. You seem to be comfortable with Vista. I've only had it for a month and have had to just explore on my own using the ? (help feature) on this new laptop. Maybe you could tell me how to search successfully.

I was taught when a child to ask questions if I want to learn something. Doing so has served me well for 73 years.

Hi login123. Thank you for the info! I'll try it soon. Am learning a little at a time. Not doing too badly for a 73 yrs old great grandma.

OK, thank you. I'm trying this to see if I get it right. Will preview before sending. Yay! Did it!

    Vista

I've use Windows XP for years, and it was very easy to find anything I searched for. Now I have a laptop that runs Windows Vista, and search does not seem to be a straightforward process. Does anyone else find this difference irritating, or is it just me?

Just thought I'd let you know I like Woodie Guthrie, too. By the way, I can't seem to insert an emoticon even thought the enable box is checked. Can you tell me how to fix this?
