  1. wgan, if you are running a WinNT based operating systems such as WinNT/2000/2003/XP then ERUNT and NTREGOPT are highly recommended. ERUNT is the registry backup application. NTREGOPT is the registry optimization application. The system must be rebooted to take advantage of the optimization. http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt

  5. I don't think WinXP HOME runs logoff scripts
  6. I noticed it and PROMPTLY un-checked it. If it was the the Google Toolbar I would not care. By the way, I have SiteAdvisor installed as it is not a Toolbar per-say but a BHO that flags nefarious sites that it knows about after you do a Google search. http://www.siteadvisor.com/preieinstall.html?1.1.0.13
  7. After you un-install anything Norton (Symantec) then start up regedit and do a find on Norton then be prepared to be amazed at the junk left over. Repeat for Symantec "Rinse, lather then repeat as necessary" Download and install ERUNT and NTREGOPT: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
  8. I have System Restore turned off now. I had it turned on for about two years and never had to use it. All of the system utilities that I use create their own backups that I would rather use as they are MUCH smaller.
  9. All interaction with spammer/scammer friendly 'cause its Frea (spammer lingo for Free) gmail is blocked agressively by me. The USENET is rampent with these spammer/scammers as they can create an account faster than anyone can say "Pass the ketchup for my chickenbone KFC ALL White $14.99 chicken breast supersized for one truck totin tub that can be used to go fishin' in with Billy Jo Bob down at the ol' fishin' hole."

  14. CCleaner deletes the index.dat file but Windows will recreate them. They will however not contain any previous IE usage tracks.
  15. I like Agent Ransack There is a free version that is very good and a sharware version that has quite a few more features. http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack
  16. On my 2.4GHZ ASUSTeK Computer INC. P4S8X-MX Rev 1.xx system with a 80MB 7200RPM hard drive I do not notice any time difference in loading applications without the prefetch entry or with it.
  17. I would not trust driver updates from Microsoft especially for modems. They are VERY fussy devices. I would only trust the driver from the modem manufacturer. Insure you get the correct driver for the operating system.
  18. It is best if you get a router as it has several advantages. * Off loads the task of ignoring rogue packets thus not impacting system performance * Can be set to keep the connection alive automatically * Provides an additional layer of protection by isolating the system A router can be had for almost free with rebates. I'm using a SMC7004VBR router that I purchased for $40.00 a couple of years ago and I feel it was the best investment that I have made. Keep Outpost as outbound protection.
