    Freeware!

Yes but Linux vulnerabilities are actually getting patched. MS just wants you tu buy an expensive anti-virus product. And because those vulnerabilities are patched so fast there really is no need for anti-virus
  2. as far as I know defraggler can only defragment ntfs / fat32, but not ext2/ext3. btw i was just reading an article in a german magazine talking about recovery tools and they said recuva is the best
  3. I can still remember when i got my first computer! it was 1999, i was four years old. (im born in 1995). my first computer was a win 98, it crashed all the time. my second computer which i got in 2003 (i think) was a win 2000, which ran more stable, but it still crashed a lot. then i got my first laptop, a win vista one, and it was really slow. then i got a vista PC (which i'm using right now) and i hate vista, i currently am switshing to a versoin of linux (Ubuntu). when I first posted to a forum I annoyed everyone so that they kicked me out. i think thars where the definition of n00b lies: someone new that anoyes everyone. I think that annoying is done for the same reason that little kids annoy their parents sometimes; even bad attention is attention! (Newbs just want to be part of the community, and to intengrate, they seek attention, sometimes resulting in annoying stuff) PS: I was born in germany, lived there until 2007, then I moved to vietnam where I currently live. I don't like vietnam. I am really happy i'm moving back to germany in june next year. Are most of you people from the US?
  4. what I find disgusting about MS is that they copied a lot of stuff from other browsers (tabbed browsing, addons, etc) and then claim it as their invention. just like when MS Windows 95 got released: I don't know the actual dates, but i know that mac was the first to have a graphical interface, the linux developed their own and then MS released the to the news that they invented a 'relolutionairy new interface' which was just like mac or linux, but they advertised it so much most people thought they actually came up with it
  5. I am using Ubuntu, a version of Linux because there are no virusses for linux and Linux is the safest OS out there. Here's why: There is a package manager in every version of linux. in that package mamager you will find all software for linux that has been checked for virusses and so installing from there ensures the software is OK. Installing programs there is as simple as just one click, and the computer does it all for you. Now when you download software from the internet, which you sometimes need, there is a security feature: you have to go to the file's properties and set the file to executable mode if you want toexecute it. Also the linux user management is very good: the admin can choose the rights for every single user. Also, to install stuff you have to be the user root (administrator). as a security feature you can't log in as user root, you can only start single progams as root. This concept has been introduced to vista but it has been used for years now in linux. Also the vista aero interface has been copied from linux: linux is fully customizable and there are plenty themes availabe (gnome-look.org). Vista is copied from one of those themes, but i don't remember from which one exactly.
  6. I think you should still check your RAM for errors. it may seek okay now, but if your RAM is damaged the problem can come back. I think you should download an image of ubuntu (ubuntu.com), burn it to cd and then boot it. In the bootd screen there will be an optio labelled "Check RAM" (or somehing similar). That option will check your RAM for errors, and if your RAM i really damaged, you can simply buy a RAM stick and replace the current one you have with it and the problem will be gone forever. The reason you should use an ubuntu CD for checking is that when Windows is running, the RAM it uses cannot be tested as it is write-protected.

    Freeware!

I'm sorry if i repeat anything above. Here's all I need to use my computer: Ubuntu ubuntu.com *open source* Ubuntu is a version (distribution) of Linux, it is therefore an alternative OS (alternative to MS Windows). It is easy to install, and unlike Windows it is fully customizable. It, as a distribution of Linux, is the safest OS, therefore it does not need an anti virus program. It rarely ever crashes, users have used it up to 11 years without rebooting. Opera opera.com Opera is a free browser, that is in my opinion the fastest, most reliable and the most comfortable browserin the world of the Internet. Opera used to be adware but now it is freeware. Opera features a pop-up blocker, a tabbing-enabled interface, a speed dial, and full customizability Mozilla Firefox *open source* mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox Firefox is not as fast as opera but it is freeware and open source, it is with one of the safest browsers out there. An advantawge to opera is that it is more customizable. VideoLAN VLC media player videolan.org/vlc The VLC media player plays almost any video or audio format, even damaged files can be played. It can also play downloaded youtube videos. It's interface is slim, it doesn't have a media library, standard it only has a reverse, forward, play and pause botton as well as volume control. 7-zip *open source* 7-zip.org Z-zip can compress files using different compression algorhytms. It's standart algorythm, 7z, claims to be the most efficient. It can also decompress most formats, it can even decompress installer files. Note that all of the above programs also work on Ubuntu, the open source & freeware OS. These programs are the standard programs i install on all of my PC's.
