  1. I'll be interested to hear how you get on booting from a USB. Didn't think that was possible as the USB ports don't come online until after the BIOS, but I've been known to be wrong in the past.
  2. Hey rridgely great minds think alike. I too took the plung at the weekend to install ubuntu dapper 6.06. After my last attempt I took my old system and tried it on that. Better safe than sorry It's an old 466, with a 8gb hard drive. I cleaned it up, installed a fresh copy of XP Pro, then went for a dual boot. It took about 2 hours to get it all installed, and I did have asmall panic at the end as the CD won't pop out. So I stuck a paperclip in the small hole, pulled out the CD, rebooted the PC..................I finally had a dual booting PC. First time ever. I've also got a 20gb external HD, which I split into 2 tens. One on NTFS and one on FAT32. So 've got a bit of storage space too. Plus windows see both parts too. Good for swaping files bewteen the 2 OS. Anyway short story long, Here's how my system looks just now, just a little tweaking. http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/40364779/

  4. M*A*S*H Theme Really good lyric, especially since it was written by a 15 year old. Through early morning fog I see visions of the things to be The pains that are withheld for me I realize and I can see . . . That suicide is painless it brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please. I try to find a way to make all our little joys relate Without that ever-present hate but now I know that it?s too late, and . . .That suicide is painless it brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please. The game of life is hard to play. I?m gonna lose it anyway. The losing card I?ll someday lay so this is all I have to say. That suicide is painless it brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please. The only way to win is cheat and lay it down before I?m beat, and to another give my seat for that?s the only painless feat. That suicide is painless it brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please. The sword of time will pierce our skins it doesn?t hurt when it begins But as it works its way on in the pain grows stronger . . . watch it grin, but . . . That suicide is painless it brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please. A brave man once requested me to answer questions that are key 'Is it to be or not to be' and I replied 'oh why ask me?' That suicide is painless it brings on many changes And I can take or leave it if I please. And you can do the same thing if you choose.

  10. Can someone explain/help me with a frustrating problem? I?m working on 2 pc's at work, same build, similar software etc. The problem is when I use explorer. I use folder view, as you look at the screen in the right window I?ve got folder and files. Normally I would double click the folders and it would open them, but that doesn?t happen, it open the search box. When I right click, search is the first option. My other PC explorer is first. How the heck did this happen I don?t know, but I?d love to have explorer as the first option again, how do I do it. I can't get into the registry as the PC is locked down to the admin guys only, so that's out I'm afraid.
  11. I've just been speaking to one of the guys at work, who creates webpages and he tells me it might have something to do with the link. Depending on who wrote the page they may have coded it to only open in IE. Something to think about.

  20. Hi guys, I'm just back from holiday and saw this thread. I was playing with ubuntu on the live CD after downloading it and I thought is was really cool, so I took the plunge to try install it using a dual boot, I didn't want to get rid of XP just yet. I know I don't have to tell you guys this but if your going to do this, BACK-UP BACK-UP BACK-UP!! I did back-up all my important stuff, but didn't do the OS. As I had nearly had 40gb of music I partitioned my boot drive to protect it too. I started the install and my whole system fell over, gawd knows why, I had to restore my PC to factory settings, little did I know but it deleted the partition too, yip I lost all my music. I spent the next week trying to rebuild my PC, so a very sore lesson has been learned. Maybe when I a little braver I might try again, but I'll never go for the dual boot option. I've also read that ubuntu could run on a USB external drive, but it has been released yet, if and when that happens I'd be very happy
  21. Thanks guys that's done the trick, have a drink on me. I can now sleep soundly as I don't have everything on my boot drive. mps
  22. Dumb question time, how do I do that when I can't see it?
  23. I've got a little problem that I hope someone will be able to help me with. My main boot drive is/was 142gb. I've partitioned it creating a 50gb partition. I used Acronis. It was really easy to use and everything booted up. The problem I've got now is i can't see the new partition. When I go back into Acronis the partition shows up, but in my computer it isn't there. Can anyone recommend how to fix this? Thanks mps
  24. Enjoy this one, I might keep this for a while
