  1. I've got a HP DVD Writer 630c installed on my PC and it's giving me a few problems.

When I first press the power button to switch the PC the CD/DVD drawer opens and has to be manually pushed back in. I thought it was something to do with the PC trying to boot from the CD and as it wasn't in the drawer would open. So I changed the boot sequence, that didn't have any success, it still opened.

I thought about updating the drives, but because I don't have the install disc for the drive I can't.

What makes this problem even more weird, when my wife logs into her profile for the first time, the drawer opens again and again has to manually pushed in and it won't eject. This doesn't happen when I log into my profile.

I've checked all the IDE cables are secure to both the MB and the drive. On the IDE cable is a second drive, CD drive set as master and HD set as slave, but that's never change in the 3 years I've had the PC.

Has anyone got any ideas how I can maybe fix this little annoying problem.

    TIA

    MPS

  2. Having just started my own site, I've done a lot of research into finding a good free host. I finally settled with Profuse.

So far it's held up to everything I need and more. Plus the support is really good, especially for a new user.

  3. @Hazelnut

I knew I'd forget to do the link right. I've updated it now.

Humpty, yeah that's granma, but that's not me, that's my daughter, I'm the old fart on the front page.

You should take the plunge and try building your own site, I've had great fun doing it.

  4. I just thought I'd let you guys see what I've been doing over the past few weeks.

This is my new site, TheSteens

It's a family site but I am open to comments and suggestions.

You will have to remember that as a of a 6 weeks ago I'd never done anything like this before or even attempted to build a site or even looked at html & CSS etc, it's been a very steep learning curve and I'm still learning something every day.

Not all the links work, but I have managed to install a coppermine gallery.

Hope you like what I've done so far, and I hope to improve it over the coming weeks and months.

  5. I cant remember the Guy,s name. But it would be The album that has the Miami Vice theme song on it, the series not the movie. Strictly music. If not the One from the HBO series Deadwood Also just Music . I hope that aint breakin the rules. Or If Ya really want ta get weird . Funkadelic by MaggotBrain or Herby Hancock, or Blueman Group

Allthough as You might guess, I listen mostly to country . My new favorite group is Big & Rich . Cowboy

    @Cowboy

The guy your looking for is Jan Hammer, good choice!

If it was me taking just 1 album, it would have to Jean Michelle Jarre, Oxygene/Equinoxe

It's a kinda short album so I'm taking another one, it would be any early Stranglers album. ;)

  6. Thanks for your advice Nick, but I personally think photoshop is over rated and overly priced .

I work exclusively in the gimp (portable), however I do take onboard about learning (x)html, CSS.

  7. Funny you should say nvu and portable apps, that's the very one I'm using. I can't stand app that install stuff all over your PC's reg etc. It also means I can continue working on my site at work, from my flash drive. So far I've not had any problems or bugs, but in saying that it's all very simple stuff I'm doing.

  8. Thanks for your concern guys, it good to know I've maybe got a lifeline I can throw out.

I've made a simple start using Nvu. So far it seems good and informative. I like the fact it can see the html code, and yes i did see the code Andavari used.

I've even got my hands on HTML for Dummies too just to guide me along.

  9. Thanks for the tips guys.

The web host I was looking at is a free one, but does involve ads. The upside seems to be loads of space and a pretty big bandwidth.

I'll have a looks at the website mentioned. I've got a feeling it's going to be baby steps to start with.

As for the code Andavari...........HAHAHA........I don't get it  but I'm sure I will in time.

  10. Ok I'm looking for help, guidance and general advice here.

I've just purchased myself a new domain name and I'm looking to build myself a website.

After spending most of the day searching, googling and researching I've found a somewhere that might suit my needs for web hosting Profuse.

I'm not looking for anything fancy without all the bells and whistle. This is just going to be family website which I might use for my screen shot and comments etc.

There is a a lot things a don't know, like what CGI, PHP, SSI, FrontPage Extensions, Perl, Python, Ruby are. I was hoping to use something like nvu which seems to very easy to start with. I would then just up load the file to the website.

Do I really have to learn all these CGI's and PHP things before I can start?

Do I need worry about what browser I use and other are going to use?

What pit falls should I really avoid?

I know this is going to be a very steep learning curve but I'm sure it will be fun.

    Cheers

  11. Sorry to here about your problems guys. I personally have never had a problem with RK.

I don't have Picasa, but I do have lots of pics on my PC.

One thing I do have is my RK launcher isn't on my boot drive. It sit on a spare drive, and all my shortcuts link to it.

I know for a fact that there is no installer/uninstaller. It's just a case of deleting the RK folder, when your finished with it.

Can I suggest you jump over to Aqua-Soft.org, on their forum there is a "bug" thread which gets monitored so maybe someone can help or explain this.

  12. I also agree. Although I wouldn't even have two versions, I'd have the one, e.g.; "Pro" or whatever they're going to call it.

The more I think about it, I'd say one is more than enough. As long as when on the first install you get the chance to install the things you want and leave off things that you don't want, like WMP, all the unnecessary language packs, MSN etc. Basically it's YOUR pc why should you be forced to install things that you don't want or need. (Sorry rant over ;) )

  13. Bill Gates signature, zomg lol! :D

9 editions, thats so dumb. Is 9 editions really needed?

    Answer: Nope.

Seems like a bad strategy that will confuse people, but maybe its meant to confuse consumers in order to milk them.

Apple doesn't have 9 different versions of Mac OS X.

I agree, 9 versions is just silly

Have a basic model and and advanced, as in XP Home and Pro.

Honestly who the heck would want a version with Bill Gates signature? Bill Gates maybe just in case he forgets who he is?

  14. I'm looking for the best freeware alternatives to the following:
