Thank you for reporting this! We've resolved this issue in CCleaner 6.23. Here's an update.

    Hi @CCleaner Cleaning Team :

    Thank you for the confirmation.

It would be helpful if that bug fix was documented in the version history at  https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history, as well as the v6.23 release notes at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/release-notes and v6.23 release announcement at https://www.ccleaner.com/knowledge/ccleaner-v6-23-11010?cv=v6-23-11010 .

  2. Thanks to everyone who provided feedback.

Further to my 15-Mar-2024 post <here> about my built-in MS Edge browser extensions, I can confirm that this bug appears to be fixed in CCleaner v6.23.

I use CCleaner Free Portable and ran test Custom Cleans ("Analyze" only, did not click "Run Cleaner" to proceed with the disk clean) with v6.21, v6.22 and v6.23 today.

The buggy v6.22 found 20 MS Edge "cookies" to clean, including 3 extensions with descriptors like  "Cookie: extension://nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaom" ...

    CCleanerv6_22AnalyzeMSEdge20CookiestoClean18Apr2024.thumb.png.1813ca1653081a953ff48f6da718dd6d.png

...while v6.21 and v6.23 both only found 17 "cookies" as expected.  I ran a second scan with v6.23, but this time I clicked "Run Cleaner" to proceed with the disk clean, and all MS Edge cookies were correctly cleaned and no residual cookies were detected on a third scan.

Just wanted to mention that CCleaner v6.23 no longer shows entries for the Edge/Google Chrome cookies before or after running Custom Clean.

40 minutes ago, Jeff M said:

Actually , it does show entries for cookies for Edge and Chrome if there are cookies in there. If all that's in there are the browser extension placeholders , they no longer show.

This needs clarification.  Is anyone who has updated to the latest CCleaner v6.23 (rel. 17-Apr-2023) still seeing "leftovers" like the ones shown in nukecad's 14-Mar-2024 image <here> (e.g., with descriptors like  "Cookie: extension://nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaom") after they use CCleaner v6.23's Custom Clean to clean their Chrome and/or MS Edge browser cookies?  Posting an image of what you observe would be helpful.

Note that I'm still on CCleaner v6.21 and skipped the update to v6.22, in part because of this bug.

I don't find it odd at all, it's just something new with Chrome/Chromium that you haven't seen before in CCleaner....Browsers these days tend to put cookies in related sections (boxes) rather than just all in one place like they used to be, so many boxes rather than one big box....

    Hi nukecad:

Browser extensions are not cookies. What exactly is CCleaner v6.22 cleaning when it tries to clean your browser extensions?

As I said <above>, I do not want CCleaner accidentally wiping custom settings in my browser extensions (e.g., extra filters and / or custom lists of whitelisted / trusted websites in content blockers like uBlock Origin).

Cleaning of browser extensions doesn't sound like something that most users would need or want.  See APMichael's 27-Jul-2020 topic Problem with Firefox 79  about a bug in CCleaner v5.69.7865 (released 21-Jul-2020) that wiped custom settings in many Firefox 79 browser extensions (e.g., the user's custom list of whitelisted / trusted websites in content blockers like uBlock Origin) because Avast / Piriform did not revise their cleaning rules after Mozilla changed the way that extension settings were saved in the Firefox storage.sync file.

Since then I've stopped using CCleaner's Custom Clean feature to clean anything in my default Firefox browser, and I now use my built-in Firefox settings to clean select browsing history items like cookies and the Internet cache each time that Firefox is closed.  Note that MS Edge, which I rarely use, has a similar setting at Privacy, Search and Services | Clear Browsing Data | Choose What to Clear Every Time You Close The Browser.

I also never run CCleaner's Health Check tool on my system because I feel it's it's too aggressive and prone to problems.

  7. Hi GuruGabe:

Your issue might be related to the CCleaner v6.22 Health Check bug being discussed in Laza's 13-Mar-2024 Resolving Not Working.

I'm still using CCleaner v6.21 and never use the Health Check or Software Updater features so I won't be of much help to you but you might find some useful information about your Software Updater problem in Laza's topic.

To see all extensions in MS Edge type edge://system in the address bar and then click the Expand button next to extensions.  For example, the image below shows the extension with the ID nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaome (with an "e" at the end) is the hidden (built in) WebRTC v1.3.21 extension in my MS Edge v122 browser.

If you have a Chrome browser type chrome://system in the address bar.

    Hi GunnyB;

That is the correct path*** but I believe that Cookie file is a special SQLite database file that that cannot be viewed in a text editor like Notepad.

To see the name of the cookies stored in your MS Edge v121 browser type edge://settings/siteData into the MS Edge address bar (or go to Settings | Cookies and Site Permissions | Cookies and Data Stored | Manage and Delete Cookies and Site Data | See All Coolies and Site Data) .  I have my MS Edge browser configured to delete all cookies (and most of my other browsing history) when the browser is closed so in my MS Edge browser that setting only displays the cookies that have been created during my current browser session.

*** NOTE to other users:  %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Network is a hidden and system protected folder so you must either type that path directly into your File Explorer address bar or use a file management utility like TreeSize Free (run with Administrator rights) to view the contents.

  14. Hi DuguaySarah94:

What is your Windows 11 OS version and build [open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver] and what is the name and version number of your CCleaner product (e.g., CCleaner Professional v6.19.10858, CCleaner Free Portable v6.20.10897, etc.)?  Are you a new CCleaner user or is this a problem that just started after you recently updated CCleaner?

When you say that you selected "all options to clean" does that mean that you've selected every single option for cleaning in Custom Clean, including options on the Windows tab under the Advanced section?  The support article Advanced Windows Cleaning Rules states that "None of these Cleaning rules are enabled by default, and we recommend only enabling them for specific troubleshooting purposes. They may cause problems otherwise."

If you have checked every option in Custom Clean for cleaning I would suggest you reset all your CCleaner settings back to their default as instructed in the support article How Do I Restore CCleaner's Default Settings?.

I use CCleaner Free Portable and only use the Custom Clean feature (i.e., I do not run other features like Health Check, Performance Optimizer, etc.) and I am very careful about selecting additional options that are not included in the default settings.  For example, I normally do not have any options checked in the Advanced and Windows Downloads sections and only have a few options selected under System.

You can file a support request with CCleaner at https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general, but if you do so please note that you might wait a long time for a reply.  I'm not sure if this is due to a backlog of support requests or a lack of staff but Customer Support is very slow these days, and if you use CCleaner Free and have not paid for a Pro license then your support request will likely have a lower priority.

Glad to hear you were able to isolate the problem, and kudos to APMichael for suggesting you try the exclusions documented in their 19-Sep-2019 post at https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/32310-winapp2ini-additions/?do=findComment&comment=310357.

Be sure to report your findings to the Visualping support team. I'd be curious to hear what they have to say but I suspect they will point the finger at CCleaner for over-aggressive cleaning of Chrome's Internet Cache.

You might also want to file a support request with CCleaner at https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general and suggest that they tweak the Internet Cache cleaning of Chrome so files in those two folders at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\File System\... are not deleted.  If you do so just note that you might wait a long time for a reply.  I'm not sure if this is due to a backlog of support requests or a lack of staff, but Customer Support is very slow these days, and support requests from CCleaner Free users who have not paid for a license likely have a lower priority.

The curious thing about it is that I first thought that the target files that affect VisualPing's job list reside somewhere in the below list ...my second test showed that preserving the above 4 items as exclusions doesn't change anything,

    Hi jbionic:

You said in your original post that you'd had been using an older CCleaner Free v6.11.10455 (rel. 02-May-2023) for several months and that the problem with cleaning of your Visualping job list just started recently.  That suggests that something outside of CCleaner changed, and it's more likely that the developers of Visualping have changed the location where the job list of this browser extension is stored.

One other thing I just noticed. The latest version of the Visualping Chrome extension on the Google Chrome store is v4.6.4.  I don't know why this browser extension isn't automatically updating in your Google browser, but I'd suggest you update to v4.6.4 just in case your problem has already been fixed by the developers.

This is just to confirm that updating CCleaner to latest version 6.20 does not resolve the problem with VisualPing's job list. ...The problem has been also shared with VisualPing's support team. Hopefully, their technicians will be able to respond shortly.

If an update to Visualping v4.6.4 doesn't solve the problem and the exclusions suggested <above> by APMichael don't work then contact the Visualping support team again and ask them for the exact location where they are now storing the job list for their extension.

I confirm the problem is related to the Internet Cache.

Also note that any changes you make to your Custom Clean options (e.g., disabling Internet Cache cleaning for your Chrome browser) have no effect the items that are cleaned by Health Check - see my 20-Jan-2023 post in fleovey's NEW UPDATE OF CCLEANER deleted all my passwords for more information.  I do not allow Health Check to run on my system, and I would advise that you avoid using Health Check, especially while you're trying to troubleshoot an issue with Custom Clean.

This is just to confirm that updating CCleaner to latest version 6.20 does not resolve the problem with VisualPing's job list...

    Hi jbionic:

I don't have Chrome installed on my computer and I I know very little about the Visualping Chrome extension other than what I read at https://visualping.io/chrome-extension/, but my best guess that the job list of web pages the user wants to monitor for changes is stored somewhere within the settings for that browser extension (e.g., somewhere like the hidden C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\...).

If CCleaner is clearing the job list for monitored websites from your Visualping extension settings then please confirm that when you go to Custom Clean in CCleaner and disable all options (checkboxes) under Chrome that a Custom Clean does not wipe your Visualping job list.  Once that is confirmed then enable one or two options at a time (e.g., Internet Cache, Session, etc.) for cleaning under Chrome until you isolate the one option that wipes your Visualping job list when checked.

ASIDE: For the old 2020 Firefox extension issue discussed in Problem with Firefox 79,  extension settings were wiped when CCleaner v5.69 cleaned the Internet Cache of Firefox 79.  In that case the problem was narrowed down to cleaning of the storage-sync-v2.sqlite, storage-sync-v2.sqlite-shm and storage-sync-v2.sqlite-wal files in the hidden Firefox use profile folder at C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\.

Note that if you click the "Analyze" button in Custom Clean that you can double-click on each category in the scan results to see a detailed list of every file that will be removed for that category.   You can also right-click anywhere in the white space below your scan results and choose "Save to text file" to export every item in the scan results before you actually click the "Run CCleaner" button.

    Hi jbionic:

I don't use Google Chrome so I can't test on my own computer, but just note that a similar issue occurred in the past with Firefox browser extensions - see my 03-Aug-2020 post in circcc's Problem with Firefox 79. That bug was eventually fixed in CCleaner v5.70 but I no longer allow use CCleaner to clean my Firefox browser and use the built-in settings in my Firefox browser to clean my browsing history on exit.

While you're waiting for feedback from someone who uses Chrome could you please post back and let us know if there's any reason why you're using an old CCleaner Free v6.11.10455 (rel. 02-May-2023) instead of the latest CCleaner v6.20.10897 (rel. 17- Jan- 2024)?  See the version history at https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/version-history.  I would suggest you update to the latest CCleaner and see if the issue with your VisualPing extension persists since there may have been changes to the way that newer versions of CCleaner clean the Chrome browser that could avoid the problem you are describing.

I don't know if it's relevant, but I also noticed that you are using an Insiders / Preview build of Win 10 v22H2 [KB5034203 (OS Build 19045.3996) Preview, released 23-Jan-2024]. The current stable build of Win 10 v22H2 is 19045.3930 (released 09-Jan-2024). Any reason why you are testing beta builds of your Windows 10 OS?

    Hi Strabo:

As a previous Norton Security user my initial suspicion is that this is just scaremongering by Norton. See StartlinkSyd's Nov 2021 Norton Pop-ups - When Norton Forgets Their Customer in the Norton community as well as my May 2022 comments in PC_confused's Internet Security vs 360 about the unnecessary bloat that Norton has added to their antivirus products in the past few years and why I now use the Microsoft Defender antivirus *** that's built in to my Win 10 OS.

*** Note that I normally advise that users supplement their real-time antivirus protection with a weekly on-demand manual scan with Malwarebytes Free just to check for any PUPs (potentially unwanted programs like adware, browser toolbars, etc.) or malware that might have been missed by their antivirus.  If you'd like to try Malwarebytes Free see the hints I posted in post # 2401939 of Deze's  McAfee Popup Scam in the AskWoody forum.

You didn't say what Norton product you purchased (e.g., Norton AntiVirus Plus, Norton 360  Premium, etc.) or whether it includes Norton Smart Scan, but it's not really Piriform's job to call out Norton or any other company for the way their marketing department tries to up-sell unnecessary products to their customers.  If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest you turn off Special Offer Notifications in your advanced Norton settings (see the support article Manage Marketing Pop-up Notifications from Norton) and then post in the Norton community to express your displeasure and see if anyone there has further suggestions about other settings or disk cleaning / system optimization features you can safely disable.

If you're unhappy with your Norton product Norton keep in mind that they have a 60-day money-back guarantee.  See the support article Norton Annual and Monthly Subscription Refunds.

    Hi necrophyte:

Sorry, I can't reproduce the problem on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop with CCleaner Free Portable v6.19.10858.

I created a new folder at C:\Downloads\CCleaner Test\ and copied three files (7z2301-x64.exe, adwcleaner.exe and Autoruns64.exe) into that folder.

I launched CCleaner and added the entire contents of C:\Downloads\CCleaner Test\ folder at Options | Include (which automatically enabled Custom Clean | Advanced | Windows tab Custom Files and Folders) ...

... and when I ran Custom Clean the Analyze scan required 6.2 seconds and the actual Run CCleaner removal (shown below) required only ~ 3.3 seconds.

After confirming that the 3 executables in C:\Downloads\CCleaner Test\ had actually been deleted I then went back to Options | Include and removed the C:\Downloads\CCleaner Test\ folder so there were no custom files or folders to clean (but kept Custom Clean | Advanced | Windows tab Custom Files and Folders checked) and the next Analyze scan only took ~ 1 second.

    Hi necrophyte:

Do you recall if you've ever added (and then removed) a custom file or folder at Options | Include for cleaning in the past?

What CCleaner v6.20 build are you using (e.g., CCleaner Professional, CCleaner Free Portable, etc.)?  Have you tried a clean reinstall to see if resetting all your configuration settings back to their defaults solves the problem?

It's always possible this glitch is related to your Win 10 Enterprise OS.  If a clean reinstall of CCleaner doesn't help then I'd suggest you simply leave Custom Clean | Advanced | Windows tab | Custom Files and Folders unchecked (the default) or follow up with CCleaner customer support and open a support request at https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general .

I'll try running a few tests today with on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 machine by adding a custom folder for cleaning  (e.g., C:\Downloads\Test) to Options | Include and will post back if I can reproduce the hang.

i didnt change any custom clean settings myself, so it must be something introduced (or modified) by update to version 6.19...

thanks, actually i only wanted to mention that these issues started happening since the last update, without any modification on my side....

    Hi necrophyte:

Yes, I understand.  I was only providing additional hints on how you might narrow down the setting(s) in CCleaner that are causing the problem in the latest CCleaner v6.19.  If you decide to open a support request at https://support.ccleaner.com/s/contact-form?language=en_US&form=general then knowing those details might provide a speedier resolution to your problem. If you do open a support request just note that you might be waiting a long time for a reply.  I'm not sure if there is a backlog of support requests or if they just don't have enough staff to handle incoming bug reports, but Customer Support seems to be moving at a glacial pace these days.

If you haven't already done so you might want to try uninstalling / reinstalling CCleaner to see if that solves your problem, just in case your CCleaner installation was corrupted during the last update to v6.19.

I also noticed that you said in your original post you have a Win 10 Enterprise OS, which might be relevant.  I doubt there are many users running a home consumer version of CCleaner v6.x on a computer with an Enterprise edition of Windows

Is this same if uses SHIFT same time when select close computer from left down corner?...

    Hi user20182019:

Yes, I believe that is correct. According to the dispromo article Shutting Down Doesn’t Fully Shut Down Windows 10 (But Restarting Does), if Fast Startup is ENABLED then you can perform a full shut of the Windows kernel  down "by pressing and holding the Shift key on your keyboard while you click the “Shut Down” option in Windows. This works whether you’re clicking the option in the Start menu, on the sign-in screen, or on the screen that appears after you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete."  However, if Fast Startup is DISABLED then you do not need to hold the Shift key to perform a full shutdown.

    5 hours ago, user20182019 said:

... I have read about this fast or slow start before too but if this type helps to edge problems too, probably worth use?

Yes, I think it's worth leaving Fast Startup disabled, even if disabling that Windows power option and then powering your computer off (Start button | Power | Shut Down) and back on a few times does not fix your MS Edge problems.  See the section titled "Why disable fast startup?" in the WindowsCentral article How to Disable Windows 10 Fast Startup (and Why You'd Want To) for more reasons why you might want to disable Fast Startup.  I know of many third-party programs, especially programs that load early in the boot process like Norton, McAfee, and other antivirus software, that can behave erratically and display all sorts of odd behaviour unless Fast Startup is disabled.

After testing for a week or so, if disabling Fast Startup dramatically increases your shutdown and startup times (which I doubt it will) but hasn't fixed any odd glitches you've noticed on your computer then you can turn Fast Startup back on again.

Keep in mind that  you don't need to use CCleaner to clean your MS Edge browser data. I have my MS Edge browser configured to clear most of my browser data on exit (Privacy, Search and Services | Clear Browsing Data | Choose What to Clear Every Time You Close The Browser) so there isn't much MS Edge browser data that needs to be cleaned when I run my weekly Custom Clean with CCleaner.

If you are running Windows 11 (I am, but I am very new to it), note that there is a setting under control panel/power options for Fast Startup that may keep certain programs running. That not good to me , if edge keeps sometimes running background and sometimes not, /you never know how and how long that happens/, it is problem of browser, solution is to slow down your computer? Instead i use other browser....

    Hi user20182019:

Just an FYI that I always recommend that Win 8.x and higher users disable Fast Startup as instructed in Option # 2 of Brink’s ElevenForums tutorial How to Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 11 and then re-boot a few times to ensure the setting change takes effect. The Fast Startup power option (also known as hybrid boot-up / hybrid shutdown) is enabled by default in Win 10 and Win 11 but it can sometimes interfere with the loading of drivers and services at boot-up and cause all sorts of unexpected glitches and problems. Many third-party software manufacturers recommend that their customers turn off Fast Startup (see Malwarebytes employee AdvancedSetup's tutorial Disable-Fast-Startup for one example) and Microsoft has acknowledged that Fast Startup can even interfere with the installation of updates by Windows Update (see the MS support article Updates May Not Be Installed With Fast Startup in Windows 10).

When I purchase a new computer one of the the first things I do is to turn off Fast Startup to ensure my drivers and services are initialized correctly at boot-up, and the amount of time this adds to my shutdown / boot-up times is negligible.  If disabling Fast Startup and testing for a few days doesn't fix your MS Edge problem and you find this is adding a significant amount of time to the boot-up on your own computer then just turn Fast Startup back on.

From Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Power Options | Choose What The Power Buttons Do | Shutdown Settings on my Win 10 computer, which shows Fast Startup is  disabled (unchecked):
