  1. This talk about Vista "problems" is largely FUD. If people took the time to actually compare the number of fixes in say the first 90 days, its actually less than XP, 2000, Ubuntu, RHEL, Mac OS X Tiger etcetc. The other point is that people have somehow not noticed that MS has been pushing out fixes well before SP1, and as a connect beta tester for SP1 it hardly adds anything that isnt released to production. The only real thing for me is bitlocker encryption of other voumes. All the important fixes are already there on windowsupdate. Waiting for the service pack is for the days back in Windows 2000 and 98. When MS studied the group of people who opted to go back to XP the majority of them showed that UAC was the primary issue for them. God help them if they try *Nix. MS has themselves to blame for this because they have taught a generation of Windows users bad practices. I set group policy to deny for users and prompt for credentials for admins though it can be disabled all together which I consider to be foolish. There was a security researcher who researched UAC and malware finding that over 97% of in the wild malware was blocked by UAC alone - Ill try to find the link.
  2. MS have an open document format reader. Dont know if it works on something as old as Office 03 though
  3. If you dont use dynamic discs I'd get the livecd of ubuntu and run gparted
  4. $20 000+ USD per month is alot of an incentive for a struggling russian or asian hacker. And most dont get caught. For us who have real jobs and had the luxury of growing up in a stable first world country we simply cant appreciate the hardship some of them have. A few bowl of rice a day and two years of saving for an old computer! I have heard that many times before. They hang our on IRC and sell malware there.
  5. I know that there is no technical reason why DX10 cannot be implemented on XP. Its a marketing decision only. I think the poor performance is three fold on SLI with DX10 1. Bugged middleware - not using 2nd gpu - hotfix available from MS 2. Poor SLI driver optimisation by nvidia - getting better 3. Devs dont know how to optimise shader programs for DX10 and how best to use this new generation - will get better as time goes on If many of you prefer XP, great, thats good Its your system and your right to choose.
  6. What rubbish * Windows Vista performs very poorly against its younger brother Windows XP. Untrue, especially now most drivers are polished for Vista. Vista boots faster on baselined builds than XP and also had better memory management with superfetch and other tehnologies that make common user tasks happen faster. * Vista has not really had the backing from game developers thus far. Untrue - its all about DX10. DX9 is a legacy platform. The DX10 titles are coming out thick and fast now for this holiday season. * Vista is a disappointment when compared to features that were promised in development. WinFS was the only real feature I miss. * There have not been any essential features added that would be useful to personal usage. Meh. Superfetch for one. DX10 for another. Or my personal favourite, far better security. * Hardware compatibility is still not up to par when compared to XP. Do a current comparison and that will be found untrue now. * Open source alternatives to Vista are equal, if not considerably better in quality and security. Rubbish. Objectives measurements of MacOSX, Windows XP, Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise and Vista shows Vista to have less security vulenerabilities than any of them. Ubuntu has over 36 000 bugs in its bug tracker! People are too easily persuaded by *nix zealots that typically tend to be inexperienced young adults on a crusade against MS. MS has done wrong in its history but Vista is clearly the most well done desktop OS they ever released.
  7. Gotta keep farming that bot net they built eh. Oh well atleast it drums up business
  8. Sp3 will be the last for XP and I say good riddance, it was insecure by design. Vista is what XP should have been.

Yes, I like tool, and maybe I should pay attention to their song "Sober". Major wife abuse for the last few days + illness = future moderation of beverage consumption
  10. The basic truth is that *nix has a strong foothold in the server area but desktops have to do so much more than servers...Many servers dont even run x.11. Have you seen how many unresolved bugs Ubuntu has on its launchapd? Over 36 000 bugs. Sure some will be duplicates and others will be user error but the fact remains it is not a robust and reliable *desktop* experience. Geeks get into it and the zealots spread their views about how its a replacement for Windows or for Mac OS X, when its really not. I dearly hope that the *nix utilisation will grow from less than 1% to over 20% into the future and I think when that critical mass happens and non geeks start venting their frustrations about the many many silly things in Linux distros on desktops do in fact need to be improved it will reach the point where it is a viable alternative. Competition is good and it keeps Microsoft on its toes. The problem with Mac OS X is that it is a closed hardware platform and that limits the effective use of it. My wife has a maxbook pro which isnt as out of date as the Mac Pros but it still cost more and gave less than an equivilant Vista laptop.
  11. Overclocked QX6850 on SLI with two oc'ed 8800 ultras.

    SOAD Tribute

Since this is the lounge, and I am celebrating the success of my current homebrew batch of beer by drinking it all this Sunday, Im going to rant about SOAD for no reason other than my own personal gratification! Systems of a Down has taken what was traditionally an era of Stupidity , of sadly halloween esk "lets play dressups and pretend to be evil when we have no clue about philosophy in general in the hope to sell a few more records so we can all chuck a Dave Mustaine and buy some more heroin" . In my youth I had long hair and proverbial jeans, but refused to get the denim jacket with patches or, lest I forget, succumb to drinking bad beer like budwieser. Liking aggressive music is not tantamount to being an ignoramous or someone socially inept. Its about connecting with the energy inside of you and having a moment to yourself that is not concerned with political correctness or other falsehoods of how we are supposed to behave. SOAD have brought heavy music into a new era that consists of actual vocal harmonies. There is nothing more emotional than two men singing their lungs out about topics they care about it, and standing up for what their convictions are. That is so much more powerful than some looser growling into a mic. Coupled with the clean tone appegios and other musical licks in their arsenal listening to a SOAD CD is certainly a multi spectrum assault on the senses that insights such real response in the listener as to leave them struck for weeks afterwards. And when we still have the classic riffs. Apart from being a "viral marketer set upon convincing you all of the virtues Microsoft can give you" ©, I also am a guitarist and I have nothing but admiration for the harmony, syncopation and sheer chops involved in their music. SOAD have a very good sense of ryhtm and use it to great emotional effect in their arrangements. Unlike the pretence crowd of lesser bands, SOAD also can explore using different instruments and new techniques in reaching higher levels of emotional intensity in their music. If it is not Solder Slide, it is the moments in Needles or Spiders that simply hold such true power to the listener it is nothing short of rapture. Yes, Daron does have that "Im too busy pulling cones to shower and wash my hair look" but behind his "tapeworm" lies an accomplished musician who's song writing ability, his sheer skill to project his compositions - even to the point where he says in interviews the guitar is the last thing he thinks about....This is a man on a whole new level who doesnt even consider guitar arrangements until its an afterthought in the heavy music genre. What used to be guitar driven music is now soundly free, inspired and penentrated into a whole new way of looking at music. The situation is only compounded, magnified and intensified when we consider how all the bands members dynamically add up to the might of what SOAD delivers. If we look at Serj we see what the old skool would have regarded as being "totally lame and weak" ® when a man gets up and actually sings with harmony and natural human voice without some lame forced bassificiation and corruption of a man's natural voicing. And yet, we have legions upon legions of fans dumbfounded at the sheer brutal intensity that his natural and harmonic technique delivers in the SOAD stage presence. This is because simply, its raw power, its raw expression, and it needs no lame colouration, no lame pretence for that dominating power in Serj's heart that he delivers so well everytime he steps up for a performance. Performance! Performance is the right word because this band is a dedicated group of serious musicians with one mission - to delight us fans. No, this is a new thing. And its a good thing. Almost as nice as my beer. I love you all.
  14. I agree Andvari and unlike Sun, it hasnt lead to many security problems like Java has had.
  15. These sorts of techniques were always going to be used. Just like how storm doesnt activate in a virtual machine.
  16. I dont agree. Just because software comes from the "great Borgified evil software giant who kill babies and are the source of all the worlds ills" doesnt mean it isnt top shelf. If you actually take the time to compare features and performance and security (especially SP1 Vista IE7) to alternatives your opinion would change.
  17. I use ffdshow and Haalis media splitter for direct show filters. Codec packs are asking for trouble IMHO. I dont use anything but WMP11 for my direct show player and Ive tried alot of them - basically WMP11 is the most robust one of them all. Ive been using Imgburn but Ill check out Infrarecorder.
  18. IN SP1 of Vista (beta currently) IE is much faster at parsing javascript and other things. Ive fiddled with Gran Paradiso but I dont like Firefox's UI next to IE7 on Vista, and its not as secure out of the box as Gran Paradiso doesnt run in the sandboxed protected mode like IE7 does.
  19. The key thing to consider is that the registers lost the plot over a memory issue. The kernel doesnt care if thats page fault memory or real memory. I'd safely bet a six pack of beer that its a bit flip error in non-ecc ram resulting in corruption.
  20. Fixed pixel displays have a native resolution and anything other than that will look blurry. Either upgrade your video drivers (assuming the graphics is up to snuff and you just have a poor default driver) or get a real video card.
  21. The absence of ECC RAM is the most likely culprit - a cosmic ray caused the kernel mode driver to corrupt itself. Windows cant deal with kernel mode driver crashes. Strangely non-ecc ram is the last of the key computer components to not be resilient to soft errors.
  22. I cant resist - actually the cause of over 90% of "windows" crashes is 3rd party device drivers not windows itself. Keep in mind IBMs S390 mainframe at one point had over 60 000 known bugs in a released version.....
  23. Bot nets are nothing new. Besides its keeps the ICT people making money off the mistakes companies and people make in managing their systems security.
