    Vista UAC

Its how Vista security works....For too long MS has had poor security models like in XP and 2000. Just deal with it, or ask Mr G to explore a service CCleaner rather than a user mode app

    More DivX news

It has everything to do with encoding in mpeg4-asp. 50% real world performance improvement. There is no objective proof if you measure divx against proper objective tests say opsnr / ssm against xvid. All of the comparisons that show xvid to be a better encoder are subjective in nature and prone to bias. For decoding, I consider libavcodec born ffdshow to be the best mpeg4-asp decoder. XVID is a legacy open source project where most of the devs have moved onto newer better formats like H.264. It's really only Divx that has continued in the mpeg4-asp space.
  3. The only way to go is AVISynth and using directshow filters for video, and something like belight / besweet for audio and a decent muxing utility. All these other mickey mouse applications IMHO wont have the flexibility to do the things that will need to be done to prevent having a bad transcode.
  4. Proper CSS support in IE is good but its also not so good as all the custom workarounds for previous versions have to be changed but atleast MS has put a line in the sand..had to be done at some point.

    IE8 Fugly

MS was one of the first software houses with a proper usability lab. In fact I can perform my usual functions on Vista x64 IE7 in less mouse clicks than gran paradiso. Actually I think that MS's biggest problem these days is its turned into a company as large as IBM (MS used to be the underdog)- theres too many players on the road to escrow for releases. Is that worse than gran paradiso going to beta with hundreds of bugs? Who's to say I guess.

IMHO Foobar is the best quality music program when setup with the ASIO add on. If you dont have reference monitors though I say that the difference cant be heard. I use alternative mpeg4-asp directshow decoders other than Divx because their player is bloated. I use ffdshow decoders - being libavcodec derivitaves. I think with the new sse4 instructions the Divx encoder is better than anyother mpeg4-asp encoder out there but then again, VC-1 or H.264 is a few better encoding standard anyway.
  7. Pfipps what do you see as being important to turn off caching in IE7 under Vista? In FF its still in memory and you still have to download it. The lack of default protected mode for FF is a killer IMHO. I guess more informed users will use something like sandboxie but the majority of casual users wont.
  8. My only gripe is the performance cost of the heuristic engines especially KasperSkys. Black\whitelists are far less demanding.
  9. Even more useful is his books on windows internals.

    Open Source

Its extensible in user add on inis. Though the idea that there is one semi official user add on (Twisted Metals) in my view is poor because Vista has different system and application paths to XP and it really requires a Vista user to do their own ini to fully cleanup on that platform. If Piriform open source it they loose their IP and make it harder to sell it later on if they wished too.
  11. Some of these things have been available on windows update for sometime. The two biggest things for me are better network performance - 300% - and bitlocker over all volumes.
  12. MacOSX is BSD with a fancy propreitary window manager and other stuff ontop of it. It actually has more security vulenrabilities than Vista if you analyse numbers over release time.
  13. Yes, but it all depends on your needs
  14. This is more FUD. The test, which is surely to go down in history as a farce, used different builds of office. The real reason why XP performance is improving is that the tricks learnt under the new secure development lifecycle that MS initiated as part of its trustworthy computing initiative is being re-engineered into the XP kernel. Vista and Windows Server 2008 are the first OS's to go through this in MS's history. In XP though Memory management still lacks superfecth and the 64 bit support on the 64 bit version of XP is poor next to Vista 64 bit. It is possible to create certain tests to grossly mislead how better Vista is over XP in 64 bit memory intensive tasks but that would be just spreading more fud with claims like "400% better performance in Vista over x64 XP!". Recently a Windows Server 2008 build did over 400% better than 2003 server under MS's "dogfood" testing of infrastructure which is one practical example of how the newer technologies work in certain situations. Too many people still have the view that service packs are a significant thing. Windows update has changed the face of configuration management. Ive been on connect for sometime with SP1 and the only real thing I am interested in that isnt publicly available is the enhancements to bitlocker on other volumes.
  15. Many thanks for this improved version. There continues to be problems with application ini detections and the sticky for TwistedMetals ini file is geared at XP leaving Vista users to do it themselves.
  16. Ok well if the flaw does actually exist, it doesnt effect me or any of my clients as none use a proxy for IE.
  17. Vista continues to have less than MacOSX, RHEL, Ubuntu.
  18. They do it on allies too. i.e. USA "acquiring" technology from Europe.
  19. Sounds like spam. Lets see it on Securina or some other proper security site and then Ill believe it. This has no real details at all and reeks of some Linux zealots wet dream.
  20. Unlike *Nix, Windows groups various services into less processes on the kernel
  21. And the most significant improvement is not limiting per application memory utlisation to only 2GB
  22. I run Vista x64 and have no compatability problems. WOW32 runs in kernel space for 32bit applications and no, I dont need crappy 16bit or msdos support.
  23. This is FUD. Officebench is a widely criticised benchmark. Run it with other productivity suite benchmarks and draw real conclusions.
  24. OneCare had problems with detection rates - as a product concept though it's new ground and Norton copied it with their 360 product. I participated in the OneCare beta because I am obligated to - detection rates are now much better and I would point out that the Storm worm was detected by OneCare where I understand only Kaspersky also did before the IDs were added by the AV companies. I do not currently consider OneCare to be as strong as KasperSky and Nod. MS has an uncanny ability to eventually win the day and I'm convinced in a few years the situation will be different.
  25. I'm running Vista x64 and OneCare Beta. I will probably not continue to use OneCare once it goes gold. Mainly because while it is inevitable that MS will conquer the av market in time they arent together enough to compete with Kasperksy and Nod right not.
