    ClamWin

ClamWin has been bought out to a private company. Its hardly equivilant to Kaspersky anyway. I'll take the pepsi challenge on the Vista firewall vs another brand firewall. Tell me exactly what features are missing in the Vista firewall? Much 3rd party software is poorly tested and does not have good penetration. I have been using Vista since the CTP pre beta release and apart from over a million involved in testing it before RTM........there is now many millions using it. The easiest way to messup a Vista install is to stuff it full of bad drivers and craptastic user mode software.
  2. Vista is the best commercial desktop operating system ever released. Get 2GB of ram minimum. I run a very similar system in one of my mahcines and its work great. IMHO, dump Norton and McAfee and go Kaspersky. More secure. Next to Vista, Windows ME is a complete joke. Its dos with a graphical shell.
  3. I second that. Its old and crappy. My AGP X800 3ghz hted northwood craptastic machine gets reported as a fast modern one....pffffftt. If you have a good antimalware program like Kaspersky Internet Security, all the other administrative tools you need are already provided in windows. IMHO all you need is Vista, CCleaner and KIS to properly manage the typical home scenario with a few machines running a private network. Many of these third party free apps arent as well tested and stable as MS supplied native tools. In the case of CCleaner I use it cos MS does not have a sufficiently featured alternative.
  4. Usually MS has a contact into the software group if it shows to be an app level problem. So no one knows if the additional winapp2 ini is compatible with this release?
  5. Is the winapp2.ini with additional apps compatible with this revision? Hey Mr G I hope MS are sending you the crash reports cos Ive sent a few but did not have any concrete and repeatable error to report. Other than a vague CCleaner stopped responding and was closed. If theres a way to improve logging / debugging mode please advise.
  6. It runs but it does not function properly - e.g. browser history remaining, problems with secure file deletion It also doesnt address new specific vista functionality so your system isnt actually "cleaned". I'm not aware of any other free utility that works well with Vista. Hopefully the author will fix the problems eventually but being a free app the support and development is pretty slow.
  7. I concur. On WIN XP SP2 it was good. On Vista 32bit its bad - URL IE history doesnt go, bad secure wipe, throws compatability errors that then get reported to MS as part of the embedded problem/solution process etcetc. There is new features with Vista that means a new release that properly addresses the potential security holes of secure deletion not really deleting all the possible places data could still exist in.

    Utorrent

Noticed CCleaner with the optional 2nd info file didnt clean up crap from utorrent. Resides in Documents and Settings\% user %\Application Data\uTorrent
  9. I agree BadHead. Proper deleting is an essential function. Regardless of it was originally intended or not, there is clear security implications with the use of this excellent bit of code and it is a natural consequence to expect proper security with actually destroying the data instead of leaving it to exist within the file system.
  10. Hmm, this is an important feature request in my view. Without this, this program isnt actually deleting any files. They are recoverable and indeed can be done so quite easily. You will found various source code snippets around with routines to do this to various levels of standards compliance. A small UI option for no safe delete, and perhaps a choice of some of the leading delete standards around for the choice of when it is enabled. Love the app though!
