  1. So what's the verdict another false positive?
  2. The default option for folders and drives listed in My Computer is Open. It's one of the easiest things to mess up when playing around with "Tools->Folder Options->File Types" which is really silly after all these years. It's hard to believe that Microsoft still allows the default option to be so easily changed, it should really be a setting that's hard-coded and can't be changed. I went through the same problem many years ago messing with the Folder and Drive settings in File Types. I've seen programs in that past mess them up, of course that's when a program put's itself either in the folder or drives right click menu and screws them up during uninstall. Also I've seen some "tweak" programs mess up the default settings.
  3. I've been using CCleaner since September 2004 on both my systems Win98 and WinXP, and CCleaner has never messed up either. If the following files are missing dblbuff.sys, himem.sys, ifshelp.sys it means there's a much more serious problem that's in itself a Windows 9x related issue. I myself had that exact problem on two occassions in that Windows 9x itself for some braindead reason "may" start to kill itself and delete those particular files, the only solution I found was to format and reinstall. Initially I thought my only problem was that win.com was constantly getting deleted upon startup, however I also found that dblbuff.sys, himem.sys, ifshelp.sys were also getting deleted -- and no it wasn't malware related. Also I found that restoring the files is a neverending endless cycle if Windows 9x itself is responsible for going suicidal and deletes files it needs.
  4. Well another option would be for you to create your own batch file (.bat) that you can double click to clear out that folder when you want it cleaned. To figure out what delete commands you want to use open a Command Prompt and type in: del /? Example: del /q /s "c:\tempuser\*.*" del /q /s "c:\tempwin\*.*"
  5. CCleaner cleans these: HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Active_File1 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Active_File2 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Active_File3 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Active_File4 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Active_File5 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Extract1 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Extract2 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Extract3 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Extract4 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Extract5 HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Last open dir HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Last backup dir HKCU\Software\PowerArchiver\Files|Last add dir To find out more about what's being cleaned open: C:\Program Files\CCleaner\winapp.ini To use user submitted custom cleaning check out the thread: Add a program to winapp2.ini
  6. Good you're on XP, I was thinking I screwed up by giving you that .reg file without first knowing what OS you were using, whew. The .reg file you can keep or delete it's up to you. It can be re-used again if the same problem resurfaces. I personally have a collection of .reg files to fix some common problems I've experienced over the years.
  7. Although I don't utilize the registry backup feature of CCleaner since I find it unnecessary due to the safeness of CCleaner, I can see how people would may need it as a margin of safety even though I don't see any perceivable danger. However for "paranoid" users it would be nice if CCleaner would manage the backups itself (sort of like other tools with registry cleaners) where you could make the backup, look at the backup, and restore the backup all within the application.

    icon cache

You have to do it in the registry 1. Save the code as "max_cached_icons.reg" double click it. 2. Download and install MS Tweak UI, install it, run it and select Repair->Rebuild Icons 3. Done! Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]"Max Cached Icons"="4096"

    Thumb.db ?

Is there an echo in here?
  10. Andavari

    Thumb.db ?

They can be safely deleted. You can also disable their creation via an open Explorer window by clicking: Tools->Folder Options->View->Do not cache thumbnails Edit: All thumbs.db files can be removed using EasyCleaner so long as you input thumbs.db into the Unnecessary files Find area.
  11. I wondered why you all of a sudden stopped posting. Welcome back!
  12. The only thing I can think of is to run Check Disk and allow it to do a surface scan. You can do this by: 1. Opening My Computer. 2. Right clicking a hard disk, and selecting Properties. 3. Click the Tools tab, and then click the Check Now button. 4. Check mark all Check Disk options, and when asked to check on the next system restart select Yes, and then reboot. There's of course no gaurantee this will fix the problem, however it's a start.
  13. MrG wrote about it restarting here.
  14. You should've used the suggestions thread located at: http://forum.CCleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=4 since this is for bugs, not suggestions.

    thumb drives

It was probably a case of using the browser back and forward buttons! Everybody makes mistakes.
  16. Would you yourself trust it replacing the resources and modding/replacing critical system files?
  17. Wait, you are using Windows XP aren't you?
  18. 1. Copy the code and paste it into an empty Notepad window, and save it as a registry entry file on the desktop or wherever, such as for example (use the quotes): "directory.reg" 2. Make a System Restore point! I don't know if it will fix the problem or not. 3. Double click the registry entry file: directory.reg 4. I recommend that you either log off, or restart Windows and then see if it fixed the problem. If it didn't fix the problem you can use the System Restore point to put things back the way they were and we can continue to try and figure out a solution.
  19. Make a System Restore point before using the .reg file! Note: Name the file directory.reg. A note to everyone else, the file is only for Newhotness. 20. Out of the new screenshots I'm surprised they haven't updated the icons for IE7, if they want it to look as polished as it's main rival Firefox they're going to need to update some icons -- like all of them.

If hyperthreading was an issue I'm sure we'd see more complaints about it.
  22. Same here, also Spybot SD's Immunize tool includes permanent blocking protection for Opera. Firefox since its inception (that's every version) has always crashed my whole WinXP Pro system with a stop error, hence I can't use it so I stick with Opera and Mozilla Suite both of which have never brought down my whole system.

    Freeware!

Tau Analyzer http://www.true-audio.com Information taken from the setup info window: True Audio Analyzer - is a next generation of a popular AuCDtect, the program for determining the authenticity of musical CD records, and predicting is it an original studio record or a reconstruction from a lossy encoded data (for example MP3). Tau Analyzer works directly with CD and has a some of additional functions such as a Spectrum and Frequency analizers, ATIP and ISRC data readers, etc. Please note: Tau Analyzer does not provide an absolutely warranty in results of detection. Sometimes the program can show a wrong result for single track (please see Testing Results and algorithm details at our site). Thus, to make sure you should check all of the CD contents for more trustable CD conclusion, except some special cases. ---------- False Statement: The help documentation states that in the unregistered version you can only analyse the first 2 tracks of the disc instead of all of them. I've found this to be completely false, it analyses all tracks. Analysis Process: The analysis process takes some time as each track is scanned. Guessing: The software can be fooled into guessing an audio CD as an original (CDDA) if you've used high quality and high bitrate source files such as high bitrate mp3's, mpc's, ogg's, etc. However, tracks derived from low quality and low bitrate files are more easily detected. Status Column (Meanings): CDDA = The software thinks the audio CD is an original (see Guessing listed above) MPEG = The software thinks the audio CD is a fake (derived from mp3's, mpc's, ogg's, etc.) UNKN = The software doesn't know if the audio CD is an original or a fake.
