  1. Someone else posted an image of CCleaner from that theme not too long ago, and I noticed the button fonts weren't displayed correctly or chopped off. An option is to right click the CCleaner desktop link, select Properties, Compatibility, then select Disable visual themes.
  2. Installing Microsoft update patches, software installations, software uninstalls, etc., will add up to allot of junk files in the temp folders. As Gwailo already stated the browser cache can add to allot of the MB size of what will be removed, even for dial-up users.
  3. If scanreg is messed up on your system re-install a good copy of it from the Win98 CD using System File Checker (start, run, sfc.exe). I've been using this method for years, via batch files: First let's create a known good Win98 system registry backup: Open Notepad and paste into the window (save as "regback.bat"). Remember to double-click the batch file in Windows to create the backup: MD C:\REGBACKXCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\MSDOS.SYS C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\CONTROL.INI C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\DOSSTART.BAT C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\PROTOCOL.INI C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.CB C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\TTFCACHE C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\USER.DAT C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM C:\REGBACK\XCOPY.EXE /I /H /K /Y /R C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI C:\REGBACK\ATTRIB.EXE -R -H -S C:\REGBACK\*.*CLS ---------- How to restore the Win98 system registry from the regback.bat backup in MS-DOS mode. Do not attempt to restore the registry in Windows hence you'll corrupt the registry: Open Notepad and paste into the window (save as "c:\resreg.bat"). In MS-DOS mode at the command prompt type in resreg.bat to restore the registry from the backup: @ECHO OFFATTRIB.EXE -R -H -S C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DATATTRIB.EXE -R -H -S C:\WINDOWS\USER.DATATTRIB.EXE -R -H -S C:\MSDOS.SYSATTRIB.EXE -R -H -S C:\REGBACK\SYSTEM.DATATTRIB.EXE -R -H -S C:\REGBACK\USER.DATATTRIB.EXE -R -H -S C:\REGBACK\MSDOS.SYSXCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\XCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\MSDOS.SYS C:\XCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\DOSSTART.BAT C:\WINDOWSXCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\PROTOCOL.INI C:\WINDOWSXCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\SYSTEM.CB C:\WINDOWSXCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\SYSTEM.DAT C:\WINDOWSXCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\SYSTEM.INI C:\WINDOWSXCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\USER.DAT C:\WINDOWSXCOPY.EXE C:\REGBACK\WIN.INI C:\WINDOWSATTRIB.EXE +R +H +S C:\MSDOS.SYSATTRIB.EXE +R +H C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DATATTRIB.EXE +R +H C:\WINDOWS\USER.DATECHO.ECHO If you accidentally ran this file in Windows youECHO MUST follow these instructions:ECHO 1. Click Start, Shutdown, Restart in MS-DOS Mode.ECHO 2. At the C prompt in DOS type in: RESREGECHO This restores the system registry in DOS whichECHO is the only way to restore it without corruptingECHO it.ECHO Restart Win98 by typing in WIN then click Enter. ----- The completely freeware, Microsoft way to compact and/or repair the Win98 system registry: 1. Restart in MS-DOS mode. 2. At the command prompt type in: scanreg /fix 3. Start Windows. This will run the built-in Microsoft Registry tool, which is by the way the safest way I know of to compact the Win98 registry. If anything goes wrong (typically never does) use the resreg.bat backup to restore the Win98 system registry. ----- Please note: If you've installed Win98 into a different directory other than C:\WINDOWS change C:\WINDOWS in the batch files to: %WINDIR%
  4. On some display cards you have to select the T.V. mode, such as:
  5. I think after adding a custom cleaning that it should either automatically tick the box, or display a prompt that it has to be enabled since many people have been baffled by their custom cleaning not being performed. I guess what I just wrote should've actually been posted in the suggestions thread.
  6. According to Microsoft Tweak UI which can also change the setting in Explorer->Customizations this is the info it states (screenshot):
  7. Download Ogg DirectShow Filters. Make sure you download version 0.9.9.5 Stable, since the most recent version has a bug in it that won't play audio out of the right channel. Edit: You could also try QuickTime Alternative (you'll have to uninstall Apple QuickTime first), or Real Alternative (you'll have to uninstall RealPlayer first). Both QuickTime Alt and Real Alt include Media Player Classic, and if you install the Ogg DirectShow Filters Media Player Classic should also be able to play ogg's. However I think just installing the Ogg DirectShow Filters will enable Microsoft Windows Media Player to also playback the files, however I think you'll have to either drag and drop the files onto WMP, or create a SendTo shortcut.

If you download the drivers from Dell make sure you input the computer Service Tag number on the Dell support drivers and software download website. The Service Tag should be a sticker somewhere on the computer, or in the included documentation, or installed on the system in the Start Menu->Programs, or in the System BIOS screens. By inputting the Service Tag it will narrow down the available drivers that are specifically for that system.
  9. CCleaner deletes them upon rebooting. No matter what tool you use to delete them they'll automatically get recreated when your system starts, they'll of course not contain any retraceble data in them until you use Internet Explorer.
  10. That's the exact same thing that stumped me when I first used ImageShack.
  11. EasyCleaner will typically only find a few registry entries that CCleaner doesn't, and it's Unnecessary files finder can be customized to find files or ignore files. It's Registry cleaner can be customized to ignore entries, and one entry you should immediately put into the Registry cleaner to ignore so that it doesn't mess with settings is: CCleaner With EasyCleaner you need to avoid the Duplicates since that's the dangerous part of the program.
  12. NTREGOPT should be safe to use and it will create backups of the original registry files. If at any time you wish to remove the backups (they have the .bak extension) there's many system utilities that will find .bak file extensions and offer to delete them.
  13. While you're playing around linking an image you uploaded to ImageShack click the Preview Post before clicking Add Replay. That way you'll know right away if you need to use another link that ImageShack supplies. Another free image hosting service is http://xs.to/.

    Opera

Not at all. You only need to do a backup if you've changed settings and have added or removed bookmarks. Your bookmarks are going to be the most important thing to backup and Opera will allow you to create a backup of your bookmarks to another location by clicking: File->Import and export->Export Opera bookmarks By the way your bookmarks are located at: Opera\profile\opera6.adr Opera automatically makes a backup of your bookmarks to the file: Opera\profile\opera6.adr.bak What I do is create a zip archive of the files I mentioned in my previous post about saving the settings. I store the full folder information in the zip archive so that I can simply unzip to C:\ and all the files will unzip to the correct folder location.

    Opera

Opera's settings can be saved! Save: Opera\dialog.ini Opera\fastforward.ini Opera\OperaDef6.ini Opera\OUniAnsi.dll Opera\OUsr600.dat Opera\plugin-ignore.ini Opera\search.ini Opera\spellcheck.ini Opera\profile\*.* Don't save these folders (contains the cache): Opera\profile\cache4\ Opera\Profile\cacheop\ If you installed Opera for multiple users look in the Application Data folder for your Opera user profile.

I'm wondering if Mozilla still has problems with ATI display cards like the old 4.x versions of Netscape, although I use Mozilla Suite without any problems, and it has only crashed once in two years.
  17. Microsoft Update - (Windows, Office, etc. Requires Internet Explorer) http://update.microsoft.com/ Manually download Windows XP updates (download and installation requires Windows Genuine Advantage to be installed. Requires Internet Explorer) http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/

    uninstall

Reinstall over the existing installation the programs that won't uninstall, then reboot, then try the uninstall rountine again.
  19. Wouldn't hurt to also revert back to ZoneAlarm v5.5. I also had the BSOD, the inability to install, and a whole host of other problems when I installed version 6.
  20. That may sound like a good ideal but there's a problem with it, as in doing that with all programs: The Windows installation has some compatibility registry entries for software like Norton, etc., that it puts in the registry to reduce conflicts. Now lets say you delete everything that has to do with Norton including the compatibility entries originally installed by Windows and you later install a Norton product, you may have a problem. Also using RegSeeker to delete every entry it finds to a reference can cause problems, since some registry data is intertwined with other settings, meaning for example if you remove part of an entry within a StringValue, etc., you can cause problems.

    Opera

Yeah, and I won't complain one bit because when they were giving it away free a few weeks ago it allowed me to go from my licensed 7.x version to a newer version that's much better. Now that they've made it free without ad's they'll surely get more users, especially those like me who can't use Firefox due to it crashing on my system.
  22. That ideal may sound good to many however there's a problem with it. That being CCleaner.exe which itself once unpacked/installed is itself larger than the whole size of the setup program. I don't know if MrG changes CCleaner.exe everytime there's a program update or not, however if he does it would negate having such an incremental update approach. Imagine updating every component instead of having just the one setup file, the download size would probably increase as per example for the current v1.23.160: Single setup file: 498 KB (510,718 bytes) Updating each file singly: 1.25 MB (1,312,205 bytes)

Mangix the more RAM you have installed the less likely your Display Card is to start scarfing at your System RAM if your Display Card itself has an insufficient amount of RAM. When I upgraded my RAM from 128 MB to 384 MB in my old Win98 system some years ago all my gaming related problems were minimized.
  24. I've been wanting to try that out for awhile. Might just have to take the plunge and download it.
  25. The ability for the user to select which *.pf files to remove is a very good suggestion! I for one know that the prefetch folder does need cleaning for the fact it can end up with loads of Microsoft KB updates that're prefetched and serve no purpose once installed, the same goes for installations from a CD source.
