Yes it's only for your own usage on your own disks/discs, doesn't just have to be your hard disk. Nobody else can access it. I use it for launching programs with help .HTM files that must be ran from the original CD. I also use it with an autorun frontend called CDStarter to load a Winamp generated HTML playlist to see all the music (mp3, mpc, ogg, wv) tracks on a particular CD or DVD.

mfc42.dll is a file that can be commonly replaced by many programs and is one of the files I pay close attention to what version is installed on my Win98 system. I've even seen some very crappy installers downgrade the installed version which was the reason I archived a known good version for usage on my Win98 system, however I haven't encountered the problem as of yet on WinXP which is probably due to system file protection. Some antivirus scanners may replace the file as well. Installing the file can be done in Windows via System File Checker (Win98) or MSCONFIG using Expand File (WinXP). I think you stated you use Win2k oli, however for Win2k I'm not sure how the reinstallation would go since I've never used that OS, however there has to be a built-in Microsoft utility for extracting files from the Windows setup disc, etc. Regardless of the Windows OS mfc42.dll should be registered using: Start->Run->type in: regsvr32 "%windir%\system\mfc42.dll" __________________________ Edit: I didn't notice the text under the topic name it's for WinMe. If System File Checker is available in WinMe (start->run->sfc.exe) you should use it to install the file rather it's from a floppy, download folder, setup disc, etc., and then reboot.

Let it send the crash data to ATI or Microsoft if it that's what it's trying to do. Of course it can also be related to something else, e.g.; a faulty display card, not compatible with some installed running software or game, etc. The solution "may" already be available in: ATI Support->Knowledge Base->Troubleshooter At the bottom of that page you also create a problem report via a downloadable utility.

Yeah. WinXP's Automatic Updates, and/or Microsoft Update is good at finding updated modem drivers if they're available.

That'll only work if you've manually downloaded each and every update. You could try my approach which I did on my dial-up after reinstalling WinXP: 1. I first installed Windows XP Pro, and then I installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 which I had archived on a CD, and then all Microsoft software such as Office, etc. 2. I went to Microsoft Update and let it download all the updates while I was sleeping. When I woke up everything was downloaded and installed.

Not silly at all! Windows will use a generic display driver until you install the new one, and it will be slow compared to the one from ATI, I don't recommend uninstalling the old version until the new version is fully downloaded. Do not uninstall and install display drivers in Safe Mode! I don't remember the exact wording, etc., however from what I think I remember it can cause some sort of corruption.

Make sure you don't rename the downloaded CCleaner setup file, the common mistake is people name the downloaded file CCleaner.exe thus the setup will fail because CCleaner.exe is inside the setup file. Leave it as is: ccsetup124.exe

When was the last time you? - Checked the hard disk(s) for errors. - Defragged the hard disks(s). - Rebooted your system.

1. Visit http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html 2. Click your operating system, then RADEON, then click Catalyst 5.10 Windows ?? - Driver Download. The ?? is just there since I don't know what your OS is. 3. Make sure you don't download the drivers that require Microsoft .NET because the configuration GUI is extemely slow in that build, instead download the standard installer which is Catalyst Component "With Control Panel" it's the download that's smaller in size. Note: ATI has changed their way of allowing downloads "Anti leeching" therefore download managers may not work, and any ad filtering software may not allow you to download the file, use a direct connection via your web browser. 4. Once the download completes you need to uninstall via the Control Panel Add/Remove (Win9x), Add or Remove (WinXP) the currently installed ATI drivers which are: ATI Control Panel and ATI Display Driver, this is necessary so you don't have mixed versions of drivers. Only reboot after you've uninstall all components this will save you from multiple reboots. 5. Once the system restarts install the download package, and reboot when it tells you to.

Just had a thought, does anyone know if Microsoft is going to offer an OS of any kind for the X-BOX 360?

Indeed only time will tell. It's almost a double-edged sword; be the X-BOX 360 and come out first being underpowered, etc., or the PS3 come out later and be a powerhouse. Sorry I'm not even considering Nintendo, since their products seem like an old relic from the 80's and 90's that had good fun memories, however I've outgrown their flavor. Aside from the power stats I'm thinking these new consoles will be even more interesting for their versatility and be a true set-top-box that can do practically anything, of course to get the full multimedia experience an investment into high speed Internet access will be a must have -- if only the prices weren't so high.

Well Automatic Updates sometimes will fail if it isn't set to automatically download and install the updates by itself. Since I'm on a dial-up have it set to notify me that updates are available, of course doing it that way for some reason causes them to fail at a rather high rate, and when that occurs I disable Automatic Updates and then use Microsoft Update. I only wish Microsoft would update the Automatic Update component so that it will know that it has failed and instead offer to load Microsoft Update in Internet Explorer.

I've never tried it, and most likely never will since there's a few good registry cleaners floating about and one just happens to be in CCleaner. I've seen Registry Mechanic smothering so called tip and tweak sites where they say you can only "fix this with Registry Mechanic," blah, blah, blah, and of course they have an reference in the link to get paid for the referral.

Where at on my-etrust.com? The MS 1-year trial download I have is v7.0.6.7 and is for one time only and when I logged in I couldn't find anyway of getting the latest version v7.0.7 without purchasing it. Whatsmore on one of their support pages it stated something about an engine vulnerability in older versions.

That particular model I have never used, however I've been using MS ergonomic keyboards since 1998 and from my experience MS makes the best keyboards and mice I've ever used. The only drawback to using an MS ergonomic keyboard is when you have the misfortune of using a non-ergonomic one, it's like learning to type all over again.

It depends, some drives "may" have difficulty with some disc brands or the disc storage capacity itself. (For reference some Teac DVD writer drives will work flawlessly with 650 MB CD-RW's, however they completely go haywire when using 700 MB CD-RW's regardless of the firmware version.) Important: If you update the firmware make sure you only get it from the drive manufacturer, there's too many hacked and sloppy firmwares available that'll destroy a drive in a heartbeat.

I had disabled the Task Scheduler on my previous factory install of WinXP and noticed that Prefetch stopped working, however I had to not only re-enable the Task Scheduler I also had to rebuild the registry entry for Layout.ini. --- Edit 1: Forgot to mention, also to get Prefetch to working again I had to do this: 1. Start->Run: %windir%\system32\Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks 2. Restart Windows 3. Defrag hard disk Note: No prompts will show for "%windir%\system32\Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks" however the hard disk light will become active. It optimizes an already existing Prefetch data Layout.ini file. It can also rebuild/create a missing Layout.ini file. --- Edit 2: To answer your question CaPMan about the registry file I posted a few posts above. Save it as a .reg file, such as Enable_XP_Prefetch.reg. You'd only need it if re-enabling the Task Scheduler doesn't re-enable Prefetch. However in most cases the .reg file isn't needed at all, however in my situation I had to use it because a registry cleaning program (don't remember which one) had already removed the Layout.ini reference from the registry.
