  1. Another way to find out how security software stacks up against its competition is via ICSA Labs at https://www.icsalabs.com. They have lists of certified antivirus, firewall, etc., software. --- Edit More importantly when you view how your antivirus stacks up it's important that it be listed in both of the following catagories (for home PC users): * Products certified under Anti-Virus Cleaning Criteria * Products certified under Desktop/Server Anti-Virus Detection Note: Currently the fully featured (with resident shield) freeware antivirus solutions aren't even listed in the cleaning criteria, only commercial software has been certified for cleaning. Therefore if you want to detect viruses, and "possibly clean" infected files, then a paid commercial antivirus product is most probably needed. The true lightweight antivirus software that is certified in both catagories is eTrust EZ Antivirus. Lightweight meaning: Smallest download size, smallest installed size, not a resource hog, and quick full system scanning.
  2. Well I just discovered two reasons why MSAS may cause system shutdown/restart problems, since the real-time protection is sometimes very slow to notice a change in system security settings: 1. Inputting restricted sites into MSIE. 2. Inputting restricted sites into the HOSTS file. It however seems like more of a problem when inputting sites into the HOSTS file to block. I've waited a number of minutes (up to thirty) before MSAS even notifies that an addition/change was made in the HOSTS file, and if attempting to system shutdown/restart before the notification is displayed it may or will cause an issue during shutdown/restart.

    Some tips

You'll find this in many registry cleaners! The reason is when removing one invalid entry that is, or may be linked to another entry (entries) will also make that other entry (entries) invalid.
  4. Thanks for the info Sniper. PeoplePC doesn't sound all that great. I'm currently trying the Netscape dial-up trial, the $9.95 one that is. The connection is alright (for dial-up) however the god aweful Netscape ToolBar is a bit annoying and big however it can atleast be minimized, what's also annoying is automatic browser loading during logon. Now I'm starting to think $19.95 isn't that bad considering I haven't used any annoying in my face ISP software since the middle of 2000 when I gladly cancelled AOL.
  5. Read this: http://forum.CCleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1192
  6. Yeah, however that's easy to fix by having it always check documents:
  7. One of those Advanced cleaner settings removes the Quick Launch bar without the ability to have it stay re-enabled after cleaning. I don't know which one it is though since I quickly restored the registry to get the Quick Launch bar back.

    real player

Reinstall whatever version you were using followed by a system restart, then try to uninstall it again. Note: Make sure you exit any Real Player components that may automatically start when your system does to better aid in it's removal. If you're using a version no longer supplied by Real you may be able to find it at http://www.oldversion.com/. After you remove it you may realise that you do need the ability to play Real Player files audio/video, the solution is to download Real Alternative.
  10. Sound's like some "professional" has been telling you some b.s. The only install "problem" would be the detection of adware/spyware infested programs that should have been scanned in the first place. Of course MSAS or any other good antispyware program with real-time protection is going to halt something when it's detected, it isn't called real-time protection for nothing. Agreed!
  11. Now that you bring that up it does make perfect sense. I'm almost thinking that law enforcement would be the only people who would have any real usage for such tracking capabilities, it would surely help them in finding counterfeit rings if they could back trace conterfeit paper money to a particular printer and person.
  12. That'll work unless you go to a store such as Radio Shack, they require name, address, and phone number even if you're paying cash. However I suppose one could refuse to devulge such information -- what're they gonna do not sell the item.
  13. I will personally continue to use MSAS as long as it remains freeware. The reason I'll continue using it is because on my previous XP install I ignored what I thought were two constant false positives: An MSIE restricted website registry key, and a VISE uninstaller .exe file. I'm now thinking MSAS was correct in finding two infections. Now after the fresh XP install MSAS didn't detect anything even though I'm using the same software, drivers, etc., except for the OEM installed crapware like AOL, Music Match Jukebox, etc. Although it hasn't found anything as of yet on this fresh install, I won't so blindly ignore something it finds in the future just because other programs such as Ad-Aware, Ewido, and Spybot S&D don't.
  14. ROFL I'm completely allergic to beer, after drinking just one (can, bottle) I've always felt like I had the flu. I'm not allergic to harder liquor like scotch, etc., however I choose not to drink and haven't had any alchohol beverage in eight years.
  15. It's like an old relic from the Win9x days (or an OS flashback), that would commonly have various programs that wouldn't allow a system to shutdown without forcing the program to exit. I've only seen it twice within the last month, and it's no problem to click the End Now button to force it to exit, but like I said it's only occurred twice.
  16. What's even more revealing without needing some decoding routine to figure out what printer was used is: When printing with certain Microsoft programs it puts the file path on the printed paper.
  17. You can use your forum account for attaching images, etc., however I think there's a 500kb limit. There's also two sites which many forum users use for hosting images (they even include the code already made for you for posting images): * http://www.imageshack.us/ * http://xs.to/
  18. Well I suppose it wouldn't hurt to verify my new install is clean. 19. CCleaner is a safe registry cleaner. You can always create a backup of the entries CCleaner finds for later restoration, you can also create a System Restore point if you're using WinXP or WinMe. Edit: I meant to say: You can always let CCleaner create a backup of the entries it finds.
  20. I suppose you'd need a HJT log for a proper analysis, am I right?
  21. Lol that's a no b.s. kind of answer. Straight to the point.
  22. I have an Audigy2 and some good Altec Lansing dolby surround sound speakers with a powerful subwoofer, and believe it or not my music is more enjoyable using a pair of Sony headphones I bought from a local drugstore for under $10 USD. However for a movie experience the speaker system is needed. Although the Audigy2 line of sound cards is good the software created by Creative is slow running crashy bloatware. My reason for primarily using headphones is because I'm constantly dealing with background noise from the refrigerator and freezer in the kitchen, and the constant noise of the fan running on the central air/heating system which makes it nearly impossible when I'm wanting to verify if my audio CDs were ripped correctly and perfectly. With headphones it's much easier (for me) to detect a glitch using headphones whereas using a speaker system wouldn't necessarily allow me to hear the glitch.
  23. Unlocker can remove them followed by a reboot. With Unlocker you're going to have to manually right click each one and select Unlocker from the pop-up menu.
  24. Has anyone else had any shutdown and restart issues with Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 installed and resident with its Real-time protection. I've noticed that my system is taking longer to shutdown and restart if the Real-time protection system tray icon is loaded, manually closing it however resolves the issue with gcasServ.exe. It's also the first time I've seen WinXP display a message about a program not responding during shutdown and restart.
