  1. When offered the upgrade to Windows 11 the damn thing won't just auto-upgrade will it because that would aggravate me? Does it need my consent before it will actually install?
  2. Depending upon what's being cleaned with some addons/extensions in browsers it's been necessary to input an exclusion into CCleaner of the extension and extension database/files - it's been that way since 2014. That details finding out exactly where the extension and extension database/files are saved on your system and then to exclude the folder and/or files. Edit: Chrome/Chromium based browsers usually involves excluding the whole "Local Extension Settings" folder to protect all addons/extensions. Exclude example for Microsoft Edge Chromium: C:\Users\YourUserProfileName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Local Extension Settings Mozilla Firefox Portable ESR exclude example (could be extracted/installed anywhere): C:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortableESR\Data\profile\browser-extension-data SRWare Iron Portable exclude example (could be extracted/installed anywhere): C:\PortableApps\IronPortable\Profile\Default\Local Extension Settings
  3. Not garbled in Firefox for me. If using any customized fonts or font sizes instead of the defaults in web browsers it can cause pages to look like a jumbled mess.
  4. Yeah I do that zero bytes trick on USB Flash Drives to completely disable System Volume Information and it works like magic. Getting a little creative with Fsutil it can create zero bytes files.
  5. If your Windows OS is new enough that still supports MRT I'd recommend looking in that path listed to make certain MRT.exe is actually installed there. It should be there on a supported Windows OS since Microsoft updates MRT with each monthly update. Note: It's not normal for CCleaner's registry cleaner to list MRT as an invalid if it still exists on the system.
  6. Does anyone know where the memory/settings are stored in Microsoft Edge Chromium for it to display a popup when looking at a previously opened PDF document "start where you left off", or something similarly worded along those lines. I don't know if it's the browser or Windows that stores the settings for it to remember where I left off in a PDF, however I don't remember it ever happening before with the original Edge or in earlier versions of Edge Chromium. I'd personally like to be able to make it forget, i.e.; clean that location via winapp2.ini. -------------- Edit: I found this, but it doesn't make it forget the page, etc., in a PDF document so it's storing the setting for that elsewhere. It however does list the PDF document file name in the "Session_#################" file, so it's possibly a privacy risk. [Edge Sessions *] LangSecRef=3006 DetectFile=%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge* FileKey1=%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Sessions\|Session_*
  7. One thing to test if you use Microsoft Defender Antivirus that's built into Windows 10/11 is to go into it's 'Manage Settings' area and temporarily disable 'Cloud-delivered protection' which for me started making allot of things open really slow, so slow in fact I've left it off.
  8. The problem could have been that CCleaner needed to be run as administrator. I currently have run as administrator saved in my CCleaner shortcut because if I don't Windows 10 won't allow it to clean some things. Problém mohl být v tom, že CCleaner bylo potřeba spustit jako správce. Aktuálně mám spuštěný jako správce uložený v mé zkratce CCleaner, protože pokud to neudělám, Windows 10 mu neumožní vyčistit některé věci.
  9. That happened on my Acer OEM Win10 Home install. I suspect without any proof whatsoever that it may have been generated either by Internet Explorer or the original Edge browser. I can't imagine Firefox or SRWare Iron doing that. Everything in there was old though from 2018 and 2019, but nothing newer. Some of it I recognized such as old software readme's in HTML I used to make and it had .URL links to those documents, and some where to actual websites I had visited, which was weird. It was over 500kb of those small bytes sized .URL files, so there was allot of them.
  10. It also matters what defrag software is used I'm not listing others here since this forum is for Piriform's software. Some seemingly take forever and seemingly don't "give up" trying to "perfectly" consolidate a disk - that's where the waste of time aspect of such tools comes into play. Whilst other defrag software do seem to actually give up when it isn't beneficial. An example: I've seen on my system one defrag software (not Defraggler) that will chug along moving a 262GB single file backup image just to literally move it a mere one or two blocks on the defrag map trying to consolidate it as tight as possible, whereas another defrag software (not Defraggler) doesn't waste the time doing that so it "gives up". ---------- Maybe if it's on your main system, such a task can tie up the system for too long when you wish to do something else, which is likely usually the case if something is going to take hours. What I've been doing for the last four years is to use a still operational older computer with a "modern enough" OS to run "modern enough" defrag software which is used for such time consuming tasks. It's also good for it having a completely different known/trusted antivirus software installed (instead of solely trusting what's installed on the main system from Microsoft) for virus scanning things like backup hard disks, etc., i.e.; a second opinion when virus scanning.
  11. I removed that link to that drivers site you posted. Norton Safe Web doesn't like that site. You had better thoroughly virus scan anything you download from that site, and also scan whatever you download with VirusTotal.
  12. If it's an Intel integrated GPU ("iGPU") they do offer Intel Graphics DCH Drivers which is a generic driver for specific Intel CPUs with integrated graphics going back to 6th Gen Intel Core CPUs ("Skylake"). Warning: I would completely avoid the current version 30.0.101.1631 since it can, may, or will damage the installation of Windows 10 & 11. ------------------------- You could also download and install Intel Driver and Support Assistant ("Intel DSA"). Then download the graphics driver it detects for your paticular system. ---------------------- Before messing with drivers it's important to make a disk image backup of your operating system drive (usually drive C:\) with a reputable 3rd party disk imaging software such as Macrium Reflect Free or whatever else you prefer since some driver updates can brick/damage the operating system installation.
  13. The scaling thing isn't really going to help with this especially with how Windows 10 & 11 deal with modern displays making everything nearly microscopic if attempting to use native scaling, i.e.; scaling disabled when at 100%. That 100% scaling is really only useful when looking at movies or videos in a video player, but makes using the rest of the computer unusable. Previous complaints in other topics about the window size revealed the way it currently is in CCleaner version 5 it's best to just maximize the window, then there's no run-off, incorrect positioning, etc. Also they changed the default window size to accommodate today's larger displays.
  14. Since CCleaner does phone home, I've personally seen it seem to have frozen/hang before when it can't seemingly get an outside connection to home due to the user network having an issue. So, I'm wondering if it could be as simple as merely rebooting your network hardware (modem, router, etc.,) so that the hardware gets a new IP address, etc.
  15. Your probably well aware that one day that decision could be rather disastrous, say for instance every scanner on VirusTotal misses something whereas an installed antivirus might detect a threat based upon what it's doing and block it. I'd recommend at least using Microsoft Windows Defender Antivirus that's built into the OS.
  16. That's why everyone should learn how to make backup copies of their web browser profile(s) and do it regularly -- I've lost count how many times that's saved me from a cleaning tool cleaning too much, and the rare web browser update that breaks something.
  17. The ProgramData folder should also be left alone.
  18. Yeah the privacy settings. Note that you'll have to periodically re-check them to make sure Win10/Win11 hasn't reset them back to defaults which people reported happening in the past.
  19. Maybe that's also a clue to the old "Error opening file for writing" that at this point has been around since at least 2018.
  20. I'm glad I use ESR Portable which is several versions behind, but one day it too will have that "feature".
  21. One would think they'd know how to by now notify users during upgrading.
  22. Instead of the Win7 OS on the old laptop have you ever considered using an open source GPL/free Linux distro? And it would likely have CD burning built in.
  23. What's anyone else's take on cleaning out this folder? C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent There's already a winapp2.ini cleaner called [Jump Lists *] but it doesn't deal with the hidden .URL items. I've got allot of .URL items from years ago (all junk at this point, and a privacy concern) that can't be seen by the user even when changing Windows 'Folder Options'. I was shocked at the amount of .URL accumulation in that path when viewing it inside 7-Zip File Manager which has no issues revealing the contents. ------------------------- Edit: This worked for me. [Recent Items (URL) *] LangSecRef=3025 Detect=HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows FileKey1=%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent|*.URL|RECURSE
  24. Print tools usually install a driver, see if this might help: https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/remove-uninstall-a-printer-driver-from-windows/
