  1. Actually if you by a cd (I'm talking about an audio CD) you don't own it, you've only purchased a license to use it an unlimited amount of times. The same goes for software you purchase.

    Safe Fixing

Unused File Extensions are just that, unused. Lets say you opened a folder that had something named document.crap, now Windows will put the .crap extension into the registry, and of course CCleaner and some other registry cleaners will find the unused file extension. Mui Cache is automatically built by Windows, and it also stores files you run such as .bat and .exe. Let's say you installed a Windows update named KB12345.exe and then deleted the installer, the installer filename should be in the Mui Cache however since the installer was deleted the path to it listed in Mui Cache is invalid, hence it's removal.
  3. If I'm not mistaken some other people have had that problem. Try this: 1. Run CCleaner. 2. Click Options->Settings 3. Untick: Automatically check for updates to CCleaner
  4. Although Blue Glass Cursors isn't a complete set of cursors it is however a nice complement to Microsoft's Royale theme.

    Dock

At first I thought it read Doc (as in Doctor), and was thinking check your local hospital, I need new glasses. That' what I would suggest.
  6. Left over remnants from CDDB are from using a media player, Winamp, etc. The registry issues "may" happen if you've switched media players and changed the file association of audio CD's (.cda) for example from Winamp to Windows Media Player. The Winamp CDDB control would then become invalid. Now lets say you've uninstall a media player such as Winamp which was associated with audio CD's (.cda), the uninstaller "may or will" leave behind a horde of CDDB registry entries that many registry cleaners will find.
  7. Everyone will eventually get those ActiveX/COM issues, it's unavoidable. Greenknight gave the perfect explaination in the post above!
  8. Your update could have just failed. Don't run any disk cleaners whilst the update is downloading etc., including CCleaner because the updater utilizes Internet Explorer's Temporary Internet Files folder for the downloading process if I'm not mistaken. Verify some settings: 1. Run eTrust EZ AV. 2. On the 'Virus Scanning' tab click the small 'Details' button at the bottom right, everything it lists should have a green check mark. If some of the items in Details don't have a green check mark do the following: 1. Click 'Scan Settings', if everything doesn't have a check mark next to it click 'Restore Defaults'. You may be asked to reboot, I would reboot even if not prompted to do so. 2. After your system restarts verify the settings again. If the real-time protection is still inactive manually run an update by running eTrust EZ AV and click the 'Update' tab and then click 'Update'.
  9. The only suggestion I have to make the forums better is to investigate why the connection sometimes dies way too often which seems like a Denial of Service (DoS). This happens to me regularly when attempting to post a reply. Hence the reason I don't visit the forums nearly as much as I used to because I'm now very used to the connection going completely kaput, therefore posting something is pointless when it won't go through. And to add to it I don't think it's necessarily a software-based firewall issue because it happens with WinXP's firewall, Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall, and ZoneAlarm Free, whatsmore I also don't think it's my ISP since I have three dial-up numbers.
  10. Are you talking about quoting someone elses post in a forum?
  11. I agree. There's only a handful of sites and forums that I enable JavaScript for, I've been doing that for years and shall continue doing that, and is one of the reasons using Opera is a joy because it can quickly be disabled and enabled.
  12. Yeah well that won't do allot of good for those of us who purchased MS Office without any prior knowledge of OpenOffice.org, and t least for myself I paid over $300 USD for MS Office, I like it and I'm going to keep using it - well this version at least, on my next comp I'll be using OpenOffice.org! It isn't an issue of MS Office versus OpenOffice.org it's clearly a CCleaner issue that's been an issue for many long months of wiping out some MS Office settings which in my views those entries that remove the user settings for Word, etc., should be removed from CCleaner, the last time I checked my preferred Word, etc., settings weren't junk. To be blunt and to the point it pissed me off when I found out that CCleaner was the reason I had to constantly reconfigure Word 2003, hence the reason I disabled Office 2003 cleaning.
  13. I Agree, so much that the quote above should be in bold text with hallucinogenic colors.
  14. Well in Office 97 & XP the settings for Access are being deleted! When looking at the CCleaner winapp.ini entry it cleary is deleting the settings for Word however this isn't just an Office 2003 issue, it will also happen in Office XP. After being bitten a number of times I disabled Office 2003 cleaning many months ago so I wouldn't have to reconfigure it. Don't forget to use the 'Microsoft Office 2003 Save My Settings Wizard' which is in 'All Programs->Microsoft Office->Microsoft Office Tools' to backup your preferred configuration because it will not only create a backup it can restore your settings from the backup.
  15. I haven't the foggiest ideal, but things in HKCR could be rebuilt simply by reinstalling the application that isn't working. What I was stating is that the registry itself HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER can go kaput on a user profile and be full of errors or missing data, etc., which is the reason I no longer use a horde of registry cleaners and only use CCleaner, EasyCleaner and RegSeeker with a big exlude list.
  16. Gripe: That website is yet another damned website that won't me use my proxy filtering software. I'm getting sick of sites that always have that Precondition Failed message page thinking the proxy filtering software is a damned robot, they really need to learn how to code their pages.
  17. Hmm, I'll wait for someone else to be the tester of it and post results, etc., they should change the name as it seems too similiar to Microsoft's Windows OneCare Live which could possibly confuse some folks. Their website was a tad bit annoying and distracting although it was interesting strange seeing active snowflakes for the first time on a webpage.
  18. It is from Roxio. Just be glad they didn't put the whole Easy CD/DVD package on the hdd because if they did you'd really be pissed with WinXP's CD recording. Unrecognizable, unerasable DVD+RW's is the reason why I no longer use DVD+RW discs on my system, RecordNow has allot of problems with them which I suspect is because it can't full erase them or something else. Discs that seem destroyed can be erased again, but here's the trick: You have to be using some CD recording software that you can click Erase (Quick or Full) before Windows trys to recognise the disc and deems it invalid, etc. Good luck because it's extremely difficult to time properly. My version of RecordNow has a one click Erase button which makes it a little easier to accomplish.
  19. User profiles on WinXP can and do become broken as in the user profile's registry "HKCU" and perhaps some other things, it happened to me and my only solution after troubleshooting was going to be too time consuming and most likely wasn't even going to fix everything was to just create a new user profile. The new profile will of course initially need admin rights in order to copy all necessary files, e.g.; My Documents, etc., from the old profile into the new profile. I just deleted my old broken profile after I copied all my files.
  20. I completely loathe WinXP's built-in CD burner. Sure it may be a quick and easy way to write a handful of files to a disc however it has problems, such as not finalizing discs, not being about to full erase discs, not being able to write some files to a CD. I've seen it complain more than enough about not being able to write some files to a disc, but it inconveniently never says which ones it can't write which isn't very helpful. Also it's slowww because it copies all files to be written to the disc into it's own CD Burning folder which is retarded, I honestly don't understand why it doesn't just create a .tmp filelist of where the files are located in the user or global temp folder instead of copying tons of files.
  21. Input this into your batch file, assuming you have CCleaner installed in the default location: "C:\Program Files\CCleaner\ccleaner.exe" /AUTO
  22. An .ogg at quality 6 would be my choice anyday over any 192kbps CBR mp3, since it's gapless and is typically archival quality and transparent, e.g.; the inability to distinguish a quality difference between the encoded .ogg and the original audio CD. We do however have to remember why people stick with mp3 which is for compatibility reasons. I'd never use 192kbps CBR for encoding an mp3, I'd instead use LAME -V 2 ("old --preset standard") or LAME -V 2 --vbrnew ("old --preset fast standard") which will be roughly filesize wise approximately that of a 192kbps CBR mp3 but with better quality if not archival quality and transparent.
  23. I use ERUNT and RegCompact.NET. NTREGOPT must be missing a few registry files because when I run RegCompact.NET it displays them as being fragmented. Whichever you use follow the advice already posted which is to create a registry backup beforehand, ERUNT is the best freeware choice currently available that I know of that can create a known good registry backup.
