  1. I've got Revo (portable version). I haven't used it to uninstall apps yet, but certainly don't mind trying. What settings do you use? Regarding #4, I'm not afraid of the registry, but I don't have tons of experience there. I do know about backing up any changes that I make there, and have done so. Plus, I make a restore point before going in and I perform regular images of my hard drive just in case. But up till now, the changes I've made to the registry were from step-by-step instructions or guides. So, this may be a naive question, but when you are looking for remnants to remove, do you simply conduct a registry search (keyword = superantispyware). Or some other approach?

    Dennis

I noticed Dennis has been missing for a few weeks. Then I saw hazelnut's comment in this thread. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=33379 (There may be other posts explaining his absence that I have overlooked.) Anyway, I hope all's well with him and his family and that we'll be seeing him back on the boards here soon.
  3. Thanks. I was leaning toward the clean install approach. A follow-up: SAS has an uninstall assistant that's advertised to be used if problems are being experienced. What process did you use to uninstall? http://forums.superantispyware.com/index.php?/topic/1345-how-do-i-uninstall/
  4. Hi folks. Just curious...For those of you who are using the new version 5.0, did you completely uninstall the previous version and do a clean install of 5.0? Or did you install 5.0 on top of your previous version?
  5. I just heard about this bare metal restore software, and I'm curious if anyone has checked it out. http://redobackup.org/

    Shields Up test

This evening I checked my router's hardware firewall setting. It was set to Low. When I changed it to Medium, my system fully passed Shields Up, including the ping test. However, that change to Medium interferes with my wife's laptop's ability to communicate with her employer's web site (she's a reporter and posts much of her work this way). Neither of us are too knowledgeable about this issue; she mentioned something about her laptop's VPN needing to communicate with the server through pinging. In any event, I had to change the router's firewall setting back to Low. I wasn't completely certain how to do this. But I noticed one of the Firewall setting options in my router's configuration was "None - All traffic is allowed". So I selected that, thinking Shields Up would then be testing my desktop's Windows Firewall versus the router's. No joy though. Once again everything passed except the ping test portion of the Common Ports test. That result has me mystified because I can't think of anything in my Windows Firewall settings that's not locked down.

    Shields Up test

I have had lots of family stuff to attend to since my original post yesterday, so I haven't had much opportunity yet to thoroughly vet the responses. (They are much appreciated! ) But I did carve out a little time late last night to check my file and printing sharing setting and I also read the Wilders post. I then made some tweaks to Windows Firewall based on that information, but my machine continues to fail the Common Ports test for the same reason as before: ping response. I'm thinking the next step is for me to explore Andavari's comment ("A common way for PING to get through is if you don't have the hardware firewall turned on in your broadband modem"). I have a Westell Versalink 327W router. I'm assuming it doesn't matter that it's a router versus a modem, and that I still need to check to see if the hardware firewall is turned on. Hope to be able to delve into that tonight.

    Shields Up test

Hi folks. I saw Shields Up recently mentioned in this thread, so I ran the File Sharing and Common Ports tests, as recommended on that site. I passed the File Sharing test, but failed the Common Ports test because my system replied to pings. On my XP Pro machine, the only firewall I use is Windows Firewall; I?ve been satisfied with it. I?m not too knowledgeable about how significant it is that my system failed the ?ping? portion of the Common Ports test. Nor do I know if Windows Firewall can be tweaked to remedy this issue. I welcome your comments. Chris
  9. Hi login. I've been using Sandboxie for a few years now and, like others here, I've never experienced a breach. Regarding your question, I don't think Sandboxie would permit malware to restart the computer. But, you may want to ask on their forum to confirm. And there are several Sandboxie features that can be used to harden your sandbox. (I use Start/Run Access and Drop Rights in the sandbox I use for internet banking.) I did a quick search on their forum to see if anything popped up that specifically answered your question; the closest I could immediately find are here, here, and here. You may have better results with a more extensive search.
  10. Hi folks. For those of you who are Sandboxie users, looks like tzuk has just cranked out version 3.56. Here's a list changes.

    DuckDuckgo

Thanks Jamin4u. Unfortunately, that's not completely how DuckDuckGo works on my system. To clarify, I have it installed as a Firefox add-on. Since all cookies are deleted when I close FF, I am using the URL feature in DuckDuckGo to save its settings. Here's what happens on my system. As shown in image 1, when I use the search box shown by the arrow, then WOT icons appear. Image 1 But if I use the seach box shown in image 2, then WOT icons do not appear. Image 2 When I use StartPage, the WOT icons appear regardless of the search box that is used.

    DuckDuckgo

Yep. I recently figured that out too. And as Andavari mentioned, with StartPage, the WOT icons appear all the time. So that feature, plus being able to save my settings via a URL, have caused me to give StartPage a try.

    DuckDuckgo

For a while now I've been toying with the idea of checking out other search engines (I've been using Google for a long time). My primary browser is Firefox. One thing I noticed regarding DuckDuckgo is that the Web Of Trust icon does not appear after each entry in the search results like it does when I'm using Google or IE or Startingpage. I'm not sure if this is due to a setting that I need to change or if it's a bigger problem than that. Thought I'd mention it to see if others who may use FF and WOT are noticing the same thing. Edit: I figured it out. There is a setting that shows the WOT rating for listings appearing in DuckDuckgo searches. For those interested, I have included a jpg below.
  14. Ditto here. For years I thought I needed Java, often confusing it with Javascript. Then I followed the advice here and removed it from my system a few months back. Thus far, I have yet to miss it, although I'm sure it has valid uses for others.
  15. Hello Capman. Try googling "chipped windshield repair in chicago". When I did that, I came up with a number of hits. It could be as simple as your son's girlfriend using that google search to locate two of three places close to her. She can then call them and get some quotes.
  16. Thanks guys. Regarding this post, I ended up successfully creating a fairly good dvd with the edits (deleted parts) and without pauses where the parts are joined. But, it was quite a convoluted and time-consuming process. I started out using WinX DVD Ripper Platinum to convert the iso to mpeg format (I had WinX DVD Ripper Platinum already installed in a sandbox from a giveawayoftheday.com promotion a while back.) Then I used an old program that came pre-installed on my system - WinDVD Creator - to perform the edits. I don't like WinDVD Creator much, but I thought I'd give it a go...and it worked. Lastly, I used DVDStyler to author and burn the video. I don't think the transcoding and re-encoding process helped much in preserving the overall quality, but my 10-year old isn't a devotee in that regard; I don't think he will notice much. Still, it was quite a hassle to go through the steps. I intend to play around with some of the suggested programs posted here (thanks again ). I sandbox everything to try to keep the registry in my old computer as clean up as possible, so no harm done if I install, uninstall a bunch of times. Dennis, I'll follow up with you regarding your pm.
  17. Understood. Thanks for the tips, Richard. Hi Dennis. I hope all's well and you're someplace nice. Thanks for your help as well. I'll keep a lookout for your feedback.
  18. Thanks Richard. I guess there's no way to have DVDShrink assign the segments as chapters versus titles. In reference to your suggestion I highlighted in red, is there an advantage to rebuild/merge the files back into one mpeg clip versus avi clip?
  19. Playing the dvd back via WMP 11 shows no pauses at the joined segments; the playback is smooth. Playing it back via VLC shows a slight pause at those spots. We have two dvd players (one older and one newer) and playing the dvd back on both of them shows about a 2 second pause at each joined segment. There are no chapters, but I recall that when I was doing the editing, DVDShrink assigned different titles to each segment. I'll take a look at Lightworks.
  20. Hi folks. One of our kids has been sorely wanting to see a video we have on dvd, but there are a few scenes that we thought best to delete first. So I followed the instructions in post #9 (partially copied above, since it's a long one...but super-helpful). I burned the resulting .iso to a new dvd with imgburn. Everything worked as expected , except when I playback the dvd, there's a noticeable 1-2 second pause that occurs exactly at each of the joined parts. I even tried a second time, burning the dvd with DVDDecrpter, but the pauses still occur in the same spots. It's not that big of a deal. But I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this. PS - I should add I've been using DVDShrink, DVDDecrypter, and imgburn for a while now (thanks to Dennis ) without any problems. So, this "pause" thing is the only issue I've had.
  21. I don?t get some of the perspective being expressed here. Maybe it?s a cultural thing. And perhaps I?m being over-sensitive. Ten years ago America received the worse attack on its native soil since the Civil War back in the 1800?s. Thousands upon thousands of civilian people died then, and before then, and since then, worldwide, due in large part to the leader of al Qaeda. The craters where the World Trade Center towers once stood are still there. So when bin Laden was killed Sunday, ten years of pent-up emotion was released that night and for part of the next day. I?m not sure how the media in Europe and elsewhere is reporting on the American reaction, but from my vantage point here in the US midwest, there?s no mardi gras celebration going on for days on end. There was a single day of rejoicing that the ?kingpin? had been taken down, and then it was back to the grind. It?s difficult to imagine we would have heard of bin Laden?s death and remained emotionless. I don?t think anyone naively believes the struggle against terrorism has now come to an end. We?re keenly aware that the world continues to deal with a very real and dangerous enemy who has had and will continue to have intent to inflict harm.
  22. I think the story is legitimate. One reason: If bin Laden has been dead a long time, then it would have made more sense for Obama to wait until a year from now, during the heat of a re-election campaign, to conjure up the story. Pretty sharp words, imo. I would agree with this statement if the celebration in the streets was ongoing for days and nights on end. But, a spontaneous outpouring of emotion like this...particularly in New York where the worse of the terrorist attacks occurred...I think that's understandable.
  23. I still run a 32 bit system. But, for Sandboxie users who run 64 bit Windows, here's interesting news from tzuk.
  24. The paid version also enables the Forced Programs / Forced Folders feature. More about that here: http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?RegisterSandboxie Tom, I have created several "test" sandboxes that I use to test software. For me, it's a three-step process: 1) I created a Sandboxie Downloads folder on my desktop 2) While running my browser sandboxed, I download an app that I want to test out and recover it to the Sandboxie Downloads folder 3) I right click the .exe and select Run Sandboxed and also the sandbox in which to run the program In some cases, such as with my media apps (e.g. DVD Shrink, DVDFab), I leave the programs stay in their respective sandboxes. In other words, I don't delete the contents when I'm finished using them because I know I'll be using them again. In other cases, such as when I'm running portable FireFox in a sandbox, I'll delete the contents when I'm finished. I think it's all a matter of personal preference. For the most part, I've had success testing programs this way. But it's not a perfect process and sometimes, particularly if the program wants to install a driver, it won't work.

    Oh, Texas.

Many times it seems like creationism and science are deemed to be mutually exclusive. I'm not too sure why. The more I learn about the intricacies and science of our world (and indeed our universe), the more I wonder and marvel over the works of my Creator who made it all. I think TeeJay's point is a good one.
