  1. I've spent the last 2 months of 2016 in and out of hospital (Cardiac arrest, follow up heart stenting, and then to cap it a gallbladder infection on Boxing day) so 2017 has got to start better - hasn't it?

(PS. the heart stuff was fairly painless, the gallbladder was agony even morphine injections only took the edge off).

Best Wishes to all, have a good year.

Hi nukecad.  Sorry to hear that you've had such a tough last 2 months.  Hopefully 2017 will be much better for you.

  2. At a monastery high in the mountains, the monks have a rigid vow of silence. Only at Christmas, and only by one monk, and only with one sentence, is the vow allowed to be broken.

One Christmas, Brother Thomas is allowed to speak and he says "I like the mashed potatoes we have with the Christmas turkey!" and he sits down. Silence ensues for 365 days.

The next Christmas, Brother Michael gets his turn, and he says "I think the mashed potatoes are lumpy and I hate them!".

Once again, silence for 366 days (it's leap year). The following Christmas, Brother Paul rises and says "I am fed up with the constant bickering!".

  3. After the mess that was version 2 not working properly on my system I won't be using version 3 either.

ditto for me. One of he Malwarebytes techs tried to help solve the problem I was having with version 2 and it never did work right.  I gave up.

  4. just to set the record straight, on my PC anyway, it's not CC that takes you to FileHippo, it's the Piriform upgrade page.

clicking the Check for updates link in CC takes you to Piriform Upgrade Offer page, where you then eventually get to the green Download button which then directs you to FileHippo.

Thank you mta for detailing the issue - what you said is exactly what I was referring to.

    @ Andavari, I agree with you 100%

  5. I'm sorry if this subject has been covered in the past.  I cannot help myself anymore, I have to ask - why the heck does the update link within CCleaner end up as a download from Filehippo?

That to me is bizarre.  At least give the option of choosing to download from Piriform.  Very annoying.  I had to create a link to download updates from Piriform, so now when I am notified of an update I open my browser and click the link I created.

    Why would Piriform do that?

  6. I realize that many members of this forum (perhaps even most) use free versions of antivirus programs.  For reasons that I will explain in a near future post, I would like your expert opinions on what paid Internet Security programs you use (if you use one) or if you don't currently use a paid version, what you would buy if need be?

Forgive me if this info has already been posted somewhere on this forum.

As always, I really appreciate your time and efforts.

  7. some tinkering in the OS settings is also needed although my tinkering would probably cripple a laptops Wi-Fi abilities.

Andavari, for the benefit of some, perhaps sometime when you have time, you could list your windows configuration.  That would probably take too long, forget I mentioned it!  :)

  8. Thank you login and Hazel, I really appreciate your input (as always) and I'll check out both today - I'll post what I decide later.  EDIT: Hazel, do you know if you get a free version with the Glasswire Free download, or are you required to upgrade after a trial period?

Willy2: I realize that Windows firewall is running (and with no conflicts) but as far as I know, Windows Firewall only guards incoming traffic, not outgoing traffic. In other words it would not stop malicious traffic from leaving your PC and communicating with the evil behind it.  Naturally the object is to not have any malicious activity on your PC in the first place.

  9. Can't a phone call to the ISP reset the router and input a new password (that's part of what you're paying them for).

Is that not only if your router was supplied by you ISP?  We purchased ours from another source.  Only the modem was supplied by our ISP.

  10. tvm for the link mta.  I'll update the firmware and then proceed with configuration according to the instructions.  Thanks again.

@ login: glad you feel better now  :)  Hopefully I will too soon.

Note: In case you haven't yet, it's a very good idea to change your password from the password that it was shipped with (usually "admin").

  11. A scan with Avast revealed that our router had been infected. A notice further reads:

"Your router has been compromised and your network connections are being routed through a malicious remote server". Part of another message reads: "Your router has been hacked and its DNS settings have been modified to serve malicious contents".

I immediately changed the router password via the TP-Link page on my browser (192.168.0.1).

Besides performing a firmware update to our router, is there anything else that you would recommend that I do?

    Our router is:

    TP-Link Wireless N Gigabit Router

    Model: TL-WR1043ND Version 2

  12. I for one also miss DennisD and his major input to the forum however I respect his privacy and personal space as well as his decision he appears to have made by his silence.

I to hope that all is well with DennisD and look forward to the day that he may decide to return to the Piriform Forum and those who enjoy his input.

I couldn't have said it better myself Tasgandy.  Dennis is a class act and I miss him on Piriform.

  13.

It could also be seen as; easy, uncomplicated, etc. I.e.; something that just works without having to jump through hoops and not having to install some huge bloated converter program.

That was exactly what I meant  :-)

If wishing to convert to an audio CD you have to tell Foobar2000 to output the wav to 44100Hz for it to be compatible with CD audio.

    Good to know, thanks again.
