  1. I'll definitely check out Nirsoft's Hashmyfiles and perhaps other Nirsoft utilities, thanks!
  2. Thanks Andavari, I'll check out ClamWin Portable and VirusTotal. Sounds good.
  3. Thank you login for your input. I have been using AOMEI Backupper (free version) for system & file backups. Works very well, but I will definitely check out Macrium Reflect. Good idea regarding light virtualization software. A long time ago I played around with Sandboxie, but to be honest I forgot about it when I changed PCs. I'll check out Shadow Defender or perhaps some free software. I'm still not sure if having the MVPS Host file and also using SpywareBlaster makes any sense. I seem to be a little confused on this. It seems to me that I need to use one or the other, not both. If only one should be used, perhaps using SpywareBlaster makes sense. But on the other hand, as far as I know, many members on here use MVPS Host, including the moderators. Like I said, I'm a little confused I am aware that MBAM 3 has some criticism but some swear by MBAM. One issue for me is that it is the most expensive of the anti-malware programs.
  4. Lately I've been exploring different ways to make sure my security is sufficient (I haven't had a malware problem for many years, thank goodness, at least not that I know of , but just want to make sure I am ready for the future). Any comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and effort. My current details: - Windows 10 on two laptops, Windows 7 on two desktops. - Kaspersky Total Security 2017 (paid version, naturally). - WinPatrol - free version - Malwarebytes 2 Free - periodic on-demand scans. - SUPERAntiSpyware Free - " - Adwcleaner - " - Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit - " - uBlock Origin - in my Chrome browser. - SpywareBlaster - MVPS Host file Currently I am running 3 anti-malware programs in order to test them (basically see what I think of them). All three are free versions that are still in the trial period. After the trial period, I may upgrade one of these to the paid version. The 3 anti-malware programs I am running real-time are: Malwarebytes 3, Reason Core Security and MalwareFox (amazingly they can all co-exist with no problems). I have 4 questions:: (1) In your opinion, which is the best of these three? (2) I believe that most Security Forums believe that you need one real-time anti-malware program to run along side with your real-time anti-virus program. Considering I have Kaspersky Total Security 2017, do you agree that an upgrade to the paid version of one of them is necessary these days for your PC security? (3) Now that I think about it, does it make any sense to install MVPS Host file and also run SpywareBlaster? Am I correct in thinking I need to pick one or the other? (4) Are there any other anti-malware programs that you would recommend for on-demand scans?
  5. What I have always used WinPatrol for is: 1) For the alerts it gives you if something (for one example: newly installed programs) is trying to put itself in the start menu. As most of you likely know, you then have the option of not allowing it. For me this was my main reason for using WinPatrol. 2) As a quick way to check what's in your program start-up folder and if desired, easy removal of the item. 3) A quick way to delay any start-up program. I have been looking at WinPatrol's other programs as well, including the Firewall. Basically what I am in the midst of doing is trying to decide if in addition to my other security precautions, if I need a real-time anti-malware program, like for example Malwarebytes 3. I guess in regards to this, I should post in the Security Forum.
  6. I will be strongly considering it. Thanks for your input mta.
  7. WinPatrol Plus lifetime license is currently on sale. For my needs, a 3 user lifetime license is $70 ($30 off regular price). For comparison, the annual 3 user license costs $20. I have used WinPatrol (i.e. not Plus) for many, many years and now wondering if it's worth buying this lifetime license for WinPatrol Plus. Any comments?

    ublock users

"uBlock Origin" was recommended to me on another forum and I installed it a few days ago in my Chrome browser. Seems really good.
  9. Hazel, I didn't know you had referenced this site before
  10. I had thought of that before going there but I figured that the regular columnist of computerworld.com could likely be trusted. Also I checked on WOT and it's not flagged. Also I would think that it would likely have been on the MVPS Host list. Anyway, I'm 99.99% sure it's ok
  11. Good thinking Dennis. Best to close it. I had 3 finds. Oddly enough not one from my yahoo account even though I have had 2 notices in the past to change my password due to a possible data breach when yahoo was hacked. Mine were: - Avast forum - Malwarebytes Forum - Daniweb
  12. I recently came across a website that's very interesting and thought you guys/gals may wish to check it out. The site "Have I Been Pwned?" will search any email address, or any user name, that you enter and inform you whether or not your information shows up anywhere online as a result of a hack. If any found it will provide detailed info on the hack. Also, you can request for them to inform you (via the email address you enter) any time in the future that your information (as associated with the email address) has been hacked. https://haveibeenpwned.com/ The link to this site appeared in an article within "computerworld.com". 13. Andavari, thanks for all your input. It's greatly appreciated as always! I agree with you and dvdbane about the detection being a false positive. I also agree that HostsXpert seems better than HostMan. Thanks to you both (and mta) I now sleep soundly
  14. mta, thanks again for all your advice. I should be off to the races now
  15. That makes me feel better I uninstalled Hostsman and installed HostsXpert. File looks good. Thanks for your response dvdbane!
  16. Thank you so much mta, I really appreciate your prompt reply. I will try HostsXpert. Edit: Just downloaded HostsXpert, seems good, thanks! I noticed that my DNS is running, should that be off and if so, how should I do that? Also, what is the best way to update MVPS with HostsXpert? Any comment regarding: I did a scan with Reason Core Security and it found "Host.Hjack" (notice no "i" between the H and J) which it classified as a high threat. The description stated that my host file was corrupt and this file needed to be removed immediately. I searched online but could find nothing regarding Host.Hjack. I removed it into quarantine within the program. My concern is that if all this is legit, then how would this have happened - would that mean the MPVS Host file update was corrupt? Again, thank you for your time and effort.
  17. I have a few questions for you wise men and women on this forum. Thank you in advance for your advice. (1) As many of you, I use the MVPS Host File. I've never viewed the list before and noticed "0.0.0.0" before every address (as shown below). I would have thought this should be the site's IP address. I'm probably wrong, am I? # [start of entries generated by MVPS HOSTS] # # [Misc A - Z] 0.0.0.0 fr.a2dfp.net 0.0.0.0 m.fr.a2dfp.net (2) I did a scan with Reason Core Security and it found "Host.Hjack" (notice no "i" between the H and J) which it classified as a high threat. (3) I use HostsMan to manage the host file but it's not working correctly. The update button is not active and also I can't access the area where I can turn off DNS. I updated Hostman to the latest version, but still the same issues. Is anyone having the same problem? I Have Windows 10.
  18. Thanks for the info nukecad. Just to be on the safe side, I think I'll use Google Play.
  19. Just bought a tablet. Can you only download CCleaner for Android via Google Play Store?
