Although a free av from one vendor can be significantly better than a competitors paid av.
I agree 100%

Just to post an update:
For several reasons I decided to re-install Windows 7 and opted for the paid version of TrendMicro Internet Security 2015. According to my local computer guru, this is one of the better all-in-one security. For years I had been a huge fan of using free AV and Firewall protection, but according to him free AV doesn't quite cut it anymore. The bad guys are now too plentiful and too smart. Naturally nothing is full proof but he claims paid protection is now better than free protection.
I'll see what happens during the next year with TrendMicro

I haven't tried Outpost Free Security Suite however make a disk image before trying it!
Good idea Andavari. If I decide to try it, I will.

Thank you mta & login for your input.
Has anyone on this forum tried the Outpost Free Security Suite?

So now it's 2015 and what free antivirus do you recommend these days? I downloaded Avast Free and decided to upgrade to Avast Internet Security for the SafeZone feature. That feature is not working at all for me (support has been useless so far) and I am not nearly as impressed with Avast these days as I was a few years ago.
Besides perhaps Comodo (which I don't like either) I realize that with any free antivirus version I would also have to download a free firewall.
Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Since Firefox 35.0 my wife has problems every time she launches Firefox. Her home page will not open and instead 3 pages open, all Firefox & WOT related.
Anyone else having this problem?
Update: After a Malwarebytes scan and removal of 1 PUP and then a re-boot, the problem went away.

Thank you Andavari and mta. I passed on the info to my friend (and gave him the link to this). The spelling error was my mistake

A friend of mine periodically downloads movies from a torrent site. He told me that today he noticed a message at the bottom left of his screen (when on the site) that read "transferring to google-analystics.com" (apparently the page froze for about 30 sec. and then the message disappeared). He told me that he realizes it's used for tracking, but asked me if I knew more about it - i.e. if some law enforcement division is monitoring the site to crack down on users. I have no idea and therefore figured I would pose the question here.

Happy New Year to you too LuLu and to all others on this fine forum! May 2015 be nothing but the best for all of you.

I had to reinstall Comodo Internet Security Premium and came across an option to install Comodo Secure DNS, which I declined. I currently use MVPS Hosts but was wondering, for those in the know, what is your opinion on Comodo Secure DNS?

Thanks very much for your input Alan. From what you say your experience was with it, I think the program must be a lot better now since I don't seem to have any problems with too much CPU usage. Also, I have Malwarebytes Premium and nothing was flagged during any scan. I also scanned for rootkits using Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and ThreatFire Anti-Rootkit, the scans reported none found.
I'll see what I think of it in several weeks from now - if I've had any problems etc.

I recently downloaded a great program that was recommended by my bank. It's called "Trusteer Rapport". Rapport is a security software application that provides online transaction protection and protection from online identity theft for consumers. You can use Rapport to protect your web browser sessions with any website that contains private or personal information.

You guys may need to get equipped.
Got all my gear from here before I retired.
Well Dennis, you're sure well equipped. Can I borrow some stuff for CSIS?

As I am secretly employed with CSIS I am sure they would consider employment with the British SIS as a no no. Darn, I guess I will just have to stick to one SIS. Oops just blew my cover, oh no!
-
I have to say in all the time I've used it (and we're talking years), it's never tripped up or failed to scan for updates and download without a hitch.
It's been reliable and faultless for me.
I've had the same experience with HostsMan as Dennis - i.e. no problems at all.

Happy New Year LuLu.
Hope 2014 is good to us all.
From me too! Cheers!

So razz tell your Sister-in-law throw caution to the wind, go with 8.1 and have fun learning
Thanks Tasgandy, I'll tell her Again, thank you all for your input.

Lulu, I personally found that going from XP to Windows 7 was a very easy transition. You would like Windows 7 at least equally as much as XP.
Thanks for your input and again, thanks all of you for your input.
Question regarding Windows 10
in The Lounge
Posted
Yesterday a new icon appeared in my tray. Turns out its from Microsoft and you can't get rid of it. Anyway, its an ad asking you to reserve a free copy of Windows 10 (I have Windows 7 and this offer is for users of Windows 7 & 8).
What would you do - would you go ahead and reserve and download as soon as it's out -- or -- would you wait a while and see what happens?
