  2. Oh look at those ears! He or she is still not sure about what's going on here. Reminds me of many years back some people left their 2 angoras for us to watch, when they left we found a beautiful young calico hiding out back, had no idea where he/she came from. Hmmmm, she was dumped on us, we had her ~18 years, best cat we ever had.
  3. Wow, that way above us home users. I see where it is 5 star rated and better vs. McAfee, Trend Micro and Kaspersky among others.
  4. There are tons of reviews out there on all things security related, YES Free Zone Alarm is fine, I used it for ~10 years. Suites are nice (also with firewalls, our topic here ) if you don't want to bother with everything -and- want to pay for that convience. Here is just one review from PC Mag: Norton Internet Security 2009 This is definitely the slimmest, most unobtrusive Norton ever. Its protection is top-notch where it counts, though antispam and parental controls are still weak. As the best all-around security suite to date (I'll be installing it myself), it's our new Editors' Choice. Another edit add - Norton 360 had a much longer write-up to put here but it was the only other Editors' Choice. ------------------------- (I didn't read much anywhere about Symantec or Norton being "crap".)
  5. Yes, the Norton 360 also has the Smart Firewall. I've been reading all of the stats on threats detected, Symantec rated very high (or better) than almost all out there, if you want I'll look it up. Edit add - there are a lot of different opinions out there, most people just get used to what they've been using and don't change much.

Focus To Next OS In July 2010 Chris Brandrick, PC World Dec 2, 2009 10:23 pm Various job listings posted online this November have hinted at when Microsoft plans to shift its focus to Windows 8. Most early adopters of Microsoft's latest offering, Windows 7, are still getting settled into the month-old OS, and discovering what the highly favored current version of Windows can do. However, it seems the guys up in Redmond aren't just hanging around, as this past month alone Microsoft has posted seven job openings in the hopes of finding folks to work on Windows 8. Technology site Ars Technica discovered the job listings over on Microsoft's official careers page. Some of the listings have since been edited or removed, but Ars Technica still has the original listings available in full on their site. So what tidbits of Windows 8 knowledge can we glean from the vacancies listed? We already know from a recent product roadmap that Microsoft's next OS is expected to hit retail some time in 2012, and according to rumors it could pack in 128-bit support (though some have cast doubt on that possibility). But these fresh vacancies, which include an assortment of positions such as testers, project management personnel, and launch leads, hint that Microsoft is planning to shift its internal focus to Windows 8 as they "head into Fy11". The fiscal year for 2011 begins in July of 2010, which gives Microsoft two years to perfect Windows 8 before it's expected 2012 debut.
  8. Since the W98SE days through XP and even with my Vista I've used Zone Alarm Free. Kind of if it works and you're used to it why change? 1. I noticed more recent bothersome "update to ZA Pro" messages, you click "notify me in 60 days" but they were coming almost everyday. I finally scrapped it. 2. ALSO I recently got a deal on Norton 360 so I'm now going all Norton on the security. From what I've been reading viruses, malware, etc. are getting so much more numerous and sophisticated it's worth getting better antivirus programs. Plus it's really easy with everything in one utility.
  9. I also tried one of our friends here (without giving his name) from a place I've never been to, Huddersfield UK. I've never been to the UK, gives it a whole different picture.
  10. Want to try something interesting? Find one of your friends locale, city whatever -or- just some interesting place you've never visited or maybe long to go back to and go to Google Maps. Then go to the street view and look around, even straight up (see my pick). It gives you a whole new perspective of the world. Might I suggest Kalakaua Avenue which is the main drag along beautiful Waikiki Beach in Oahu, Hawai'i or use your own choice. It's truly amazing, just like Hawai'i.

  15. There was a birthday this past July 4th, well a 234th birthday to none other than the USA itself. Loved, revered, misunderstood even disliked by some but still over 200 years of freedom, sometimes at a cost. That old saying "Freedom isn't free" is true. It isn't just automatically just passed down decade after decade, it must be cared for even fought for but that's not why I posted this. Not a political debate, just a numerical fact, we've been a country for 234 years....and counting. It has been the beacon for a new life for many generations both here and abroad. It started with a lot of work and ideas like this Preamble to the Constitution 234 years ago...."We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America". That and a whole bunch more.

    I'm on my 3rd laptop, all ThinkPads, first two IBM, third Lenovo. 1999 i1460 W98SE 2002 R32 XP Pro 2008 R500 Vista All still work but basically upgraded for more of everything. First two really solidly built machines, the Lenovo, not bad. They cost a little more but I like them!!

  19. A little P.S. One more thing thing is coming online right now and that's the conversion of ALL of your medical information digital files. (my wife's a nurse in a hospital, the HIPPA and other things are unreal) If anyone breaks into that they have "the whole picture", your name, address, medical history, sometimes SS#. So how safe will that encryption be? Any bad medical records clerk can have a field day!
  20. ident, First I find this all quite interesting, even from LuLu's original questions about FB and mine on security in general. On my log book, nobody has access, I can even lock it up if necessary. It would be easier to steal my computer than the books. I've been asked sec questions from time to time if I need to talk with a bank, investment rep, whatever. Would you believe I did it TODAY when I switched an savings account to a higher interest one, I just told him a few recent transaction numbers (he had it on his screen) and I knew who I was talking to. Also I'm an MBA with a dual finance/mgt major. I help other people with accounts, even if they're standing right next to me they require secret questions or info to access information. I can see where your 20 number PIN is quite secure. Banks....and now a new player MEDICAL providers or insurance companies are getting into the security numbers and ID questions game. YES you have to be smart, make that clever and smart. The days of SS# and mother's madien name are GONE. Nice chat...mjp
  21. Well anyone's favorite teams still alive?? I dropped from #1 to #3 in our FL tournament becasue I was going to pick Gahana 2-1 over the USA but chickened out....lost 6 big points, oh well.
  22. Are you still up? I've done 24+ several times when I was ~20 but wouldn't recommend it. People in war situations have done it for long stretches. ------------------ On overweight and obesity, well since the computer, home video games, cell phones it's really gone up. GET OUT AND EXERCISE! More than a third of U.S. adults are obese. But at least the climb in the country?s obesity rate seems to be slowing. Figures from the National Center for Health Statistics showed 34% of Americans age 20 and older were obese in 2007-08, according to a study of CDC data published in JAMA today. Add in people who are overweight and the total goes to 68%. Seventeen percent of children ages 2 through 19 were obese and 32% were overweight, another JAMA study said.
  23. ident, My question was what do you do when a secret question or questions are required. First I am the only one that has access to my computer. I also have a secure log book to keep track of all my accounts, user names, passwords. ALSO almost every secure site (banking, credit cards, etc.) REQUIRE security questions in case you have to call them, etc. As a general rule I don't use the recommended list they give, you know the easy ones, I make up my own questions that only I'd know. For example you can also make up answers that really doesn't match like: Favorite color, car, whatever....put in any, not even your favorite. (nobody can guess that, could you?) That's what I wanted to know. mjp
  24. ident, Just curious, why not never use secret questions? Is that just for FB (which I'm not on) or for other applications? All of the secure sites like banks and credit cards require the use of secret questions. Thanks, mjp
