  1. - Seems WU hasn't been fixed at all. Today "Svchost.exe" & the Service "Wuauserv" (See Resource Monitor, Processor tab) were using A LOT OF CPU again.
  2. - When I read this article right then MS will regularly make new "Convenience Roll Up" packages/Updates available ??? http://www.ghacks.net/2016/05/17/microsoft-updating-windows-7-8-1-easier/ That's not what I read in the Original MS blog post: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsitpro/2016/05/17/simplifying-updates-for-windows-7-and-8-1/ Although the article contains these words "We’re happy to announce today that we’re making available a new convenience rollup for Windows 7 SP1 that will help. This convenience rollup package, .............. " It would also explain why there was this "-v4-" in the name of the "Roll Up Update".
  3. - The Anniverssary Update for Win 10 will be available on August 2, 2016. http://www.ghacks.net/2016/06/28/windows-10-anniversary-update-available-august-2/
  4. - Does anyone know a program that is capable of showing where on my HD the pagefile is located ? Something like what Defraggler does with it map of a drive. It will help me to tell whether or not Defraggler is right when it tells me I have no pagefile.
  5. - Is this bug already fixed ? - If not, then SYSNATIVE has a procedure to fix the "corruption". https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/18121-guide-opencl-dll-corruption-sfc-dism-windows-10-update-1511-th2.html
  6. - According to this thread on the SYSNATIVE website MS has solved the "Update problem". It supposedly was a problem in "Win32k.sys". Well, we'll have to wait & see. https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/20476-guide-windows-7-very-slow-scan-times-when-checking-updates.html
  7. - I made a picture of the situation on my HD. See attachment. I moved A LOT OF "spacehogs" to the end of the drive. Would such a "crowded" HD impede Windows to create a pagefile ? - Did another search (with DF) to find the pagefile (also on the other drives) but to no avail.
  8. - When I set the pagefile to its default setting then DF still fails to show the pagefile in the drive map. - I also ran SPECCY & XYplorer (https://www.xyplorer.com/) and both programs reported that I had a pagefile of ~ 8 GB (16 GB virtual memory and 8 GB physical memory ==> pagefile of 8 GB). - I also noticed something else. Upon start up DF can defragment a number of system files. (I activated that option) The names of those files are listed for a brief moment when Windows starts. But now the list doesn't include "Pagefile.sys" (any more ??). That would suggest that DF fails to recognize the pagefile is active or present. Odd, very odd. - I moved a whole bunch of files to the end of the drive. As a result of that at the beginning there's no place where the pagefile can beplaced without being fragmented in A LOT OF fragments. Perhaps that could push DF "off the rails" ?? Or perhaps in this case Windows simply doesn't want to create a pagefile. Because I have seen cases where a drive was so full that Windows removed all kinds of temporary system files, including the pagefile. But on the other hand I still have some 80 GB of free diskspace. Odd, very odd.
  9. - The pagefile doesn't show up anymore in the drive map. No matter what I do. I fear this could be a bug that's hidden VERY deep in the program code.
  10. Oooops. WizTree has advanced to version V2.00. Same weblink as in the previous post.
  11. WizTree (v1.07 is the latest version) - Much faster than e.g. Treesize (Free) because "WizTree" searches the MFT to find the files. - WizTree has an extra feature. After searching the HD the user can let the program pull up/show the 1000 largest files on the HD. WizTree has a tab for that. And that includes (a number of) system files as well. Like "$MFT", "Pagefile.sys" and "Hiberfil.sys". Weblink: http://antibody-software.com/web/software/software/wiztree-finds-the-files-and-folders-using-the-most-disk-space-on-your-hard-drive/
  12. - The article (see post #1) also reveals more changes. Somewhere this summer MS is going to change/update the Update webpage code (think: ActiveX). Then e.g. Chrome & Firefox users are also able to download Windows Updates.
  13. Bug (????) in DF v2.21. Topic: "Missing" pagefile. - I recently realized that when I run DF then the pagefile doesn't show up anymore in the drive map of DF. I changed the color of the pagefile blocks from yellow(-ish) to black and (after that) to other colors as well. But it was to no avail. The pagefile fails to show up. - I even let DF search for the file called "Pagefile.sys" but no success there either. DF e.g. did find "Hiberfil.sys". - I ran 2 other programs (Everything & Wiztree) and both DID find "pagefile.sys". Both programs told me that the pagefile ("pagefile.sys") was ~ 8 Gb in size. Odd, very odd. - Would changing the settings that govern the showing of System Restore Points and "Hiberfil.sys" have an impact on whether or not the pagefile shows up in the drive map ? I could imagine that somewhere deep in DF an internal switch is triggered/reversed that prevents the pagefile from showing up. - I also have been "fiddling" a bit with how the user wants Window 7 to handle the pagefile. Things like "no pagefile" and "fixed size for the pagefile". But I would assume that shouldn't have an impact on how DF "behaves". I still think there could/is a bug in DF (v2.21).
  14. Californian woman sued Microsoft for a failed Win 10 auto upgrade and won. MS agreed to pay $ 10.000 without admitting guilt. Did she REALLY never hear of Windows 10 ? I doubt it. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/618378/california-woman-awarded-10000-for-borked-windows-10-upgrade http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2462919/updategate-california-woman-awarded-usd10-000-for-borked-windows-10-upgrade
  15. - Well, then the IE 11 installation program doesn't bother to check whether or not those 3 Updates are optional. Those 3 were simply downloaded & installed along with the other updates. I don't have control over that once that installation is running. - By default, Win 7 (SP 1) comes with IE 8 and some websites explicitely say: "This website doesn't support IE 8". So, updating to IE 11 is the 1st I'll do, to be able to go online. - "For a better experience" ????? I GOOGLEd those three Updates and I found no info that indicated that these 3 are "better experience" related. Those updates simply add some extra odd functionality.
  16. - Before MS started to release "Cumulative Security Updates" for IE, one had to install A LOT OF IE updates each time one re-installed Win 7. In those days I was able to reduce the "winsxs" folder by some 2 GB. - Now one "Cumulative Security Update" suffices. And that means A LOT OF "bloatware" less in the "winsxs" folder. And I am not surprised to see that after installation of the "Convenience rollup" the "winsxs" grows less in comparison with installing A LOT OF separate updates. - Didn't install the "Convenience Update" yet. I want to see which updates MS offers without that large Update. - But it's good to hear/know that this one update is included in the "Conveniemce Rollup". - Users of the "paid for" ( $30) version of "Tweaking's Windows Repair" are able to increase the amount of locations that are cleaned with that "Disk Clean Up" tool.
  17. - After installing some 120 security updates & all the .Net security updates (in total about 150 updates in 2 separate update "runs") I didn't experience (up to now) any WU problems. But I still have to see which of the 67 "optional" updates I want to install. I installed only 1 "optional" update. See: https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=46454 The situation I describe here would suggest that one or more of those "Optional" updates pushes CPU of svchost.exe through the roof. - The only update I installed to get WU working (smoothly) was KB 3102810. Then WU came up with a list of updates after only say 10 minutes and with low CPU). That was right after I re-installed Win 7 SP1 a few days ago. (See reply #19 in this thread).
  18. @Hazelnut: Vista has the same problems. See e.g.: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/611898/windows-vista-update-hangs-at-checking-for-updates/ (Is MS too busy with Win 10 ???).
  19. - Based on info found on "BleepingComputer" I found something disturbing. It seems that if one hates to see that WU runs forever searching for updates then one needs install a new (security ???) patch every month, before one lets WU search for updates. - It suggests that one or more updates "break" something in Windows and that only a (security ???) patch can fix that broken part of WU/Windows. Quote from one "JohnC_21" (in bold italics) on june 15, 2016: It is getting to a point where every month requires a new update to be manually installed. See this post. This month's required update is KB3161664. In the future every month look at this site for the next update to manually download. http://wu.krelay.de/en/ Sources: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/610184/windows-update-taking-a-long-time-should-i-stop-it/ http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/616671/what-is-going-on-with-windows-update http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/617418/windows-update-stalls-when-checking-for-updates/ http://wu.krelay.de/en/
  20. I know some people are reluctant to install "Optional Updates". Because some of those Updates have a "questionable" reputation. But there's one Update that is - IMO - actually a "Must Install". And that's KB 2852386. After installation it will enables the user to free up A LOT OF EXTRA (!!!) disk space. And I am talking GBs. I posted this info previously on this forum (buried deeply in one of the threads) but I thought it would benefit more Win 7 & Windows Server users who regularly visit this forum. See the info in this thread on the "Tweaking.com" forum website. http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,4643.0.html
  21. - Did you try the "Defrag Free Space" options ? Both options move files to the beginning of the drive. But these options start with the files that are closest to the beginning of the drive and then work towards the end of the drive.
  22. - This article http://www.infoworld.com/article/3058260/microsoft-windows/heres-how-to-significantly-speed-up-windows-7-scans-for-updates.html says that one needs to install 2 updates (KB 3138612 & KB 3145739) to fix WU. - "Mixing cement & beer to produce cheesecake" ??? I think Windows still contained (contains ???) one or more bugs when it came to handling Unicode characters and those bugs could/can throw WU "off the rails". - I followed the instructions of reply # 13 in this thread http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/616671/what-is-going-on-with-windows-update/ It recommended to install KB 3102810 and it worked on my (freshly) installed Win 7 SP 1 system to solve the high CPU problem. (But it also recommended to install KB 3138612). - On the topic "Installing IE 11": - I have a copy of the IE 11 stand alone installation program and a copy of the latest "Cumulative Security Update for IE 11". It allows me to install IE 11 even when WU "doesn't work". IE 11 checks whether or not a number of Updates are installed and will automatically download & install those Updates before it installs itself. Those updates are (I have those installation files as well): KB 2533623 KB 2639308 KB 2670838 KB 2729094 KB 2731771 KB 2786081 KB 2834140 KB 2882822 KB 2888049 In other words: I am less dependent on WU working properly. - The WU procedure/algorithm still has some (small ???) bugs. Although I re-installed Win 7 SP 1 (2 days ago) WU recommended that I should install SP 1 (Size: ~ 9 MB). But the Win 7 SP 1 stand alone update has a size of ~ 920 MB. And when I try to install that stand alone update (KB 976932) then I get a "SP 1 is already installed" error. Odd, very odd. - Computers are complicated things, right ?
  23. "KB 3159635 will upgrade you to Windows 10 version 1511" Source: http://www.infoworld.com/article/3071152/microsoft-windows/kb-3159635-will-upgrade-you-to-windows-10-version-1511.html
  24. - Warning: If you install this update & use the "Disk Clean Up" tool then you won't be able to remove the previous updates any more. - Ooops. I took one look at the calender in Win 7 and that gave an answer why MS didn't release any updates yet. Next tuesday is the second tuesday of the month.
