  1. I was looking to start a subject like this but shall add here to continue the flow...

I was wondering why DF doesn't use the big areas of space on my drive to create a copy of the LARGE files I have - one of them HAS to be 285MB+ and DF can't seem to defrag anything over 50MB - or at least it isn't able to for me and I'm using ver 1.15.163 so am up to date...

I have a few files that are over 100MB and one of them is 31 fragments and is very slow to access :(

If DF created a copy of these large files into an unfragmented copy, then deleted the fragmented one it would then be able to move files about to make space for the big ones at the end of the drive like it's supposed to in the options...

At the moment I'm being shown that there's lots of little files all over the drive, including the end of the drive where I've asked for all large files to be moved to...

    Nick

I have also noticed that large files take a long time when highlighting files that need to be defragged.

These files are about 4 GB's. Another thing is that when I make an ISO image of a dvd with Nero it will not defrag completley after a long time of trying.

Prior versions did defrag these large ISO files.

  2. Support - A good idea. I agree.

Oppose - In my humble opinion, it is a bad idea.

What I do for myself and other who I help clean up there computer with junk and viruses:

I create a folder on the desktop and name it Utility Tools. Inside this folder I add the shortcuts too programs such as Ccleaner, Defraggler, Recuva, MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster, Windows Defender, Antivirus program, Revouninstaller, and Cleanmem.

  3. Also from another programer i find over riding the forms onclose event to minimize to system tray extreamly annoying.

I dont mind the resize event going to the tray but when i click close i expect the application to end.

I was just simply curious to what purpose ccleaner could have to be constantly running in the back ground.

It just seems to me you are intent on having as many items in the tray as you can

I agree with to many icons on task bar takes resources. I have helped people with computers telling me there computer is to slow and by removing these icons has helped.

However it's not only the resource issue that to many icons or tasks running slow down the computer but the other issue is when running to many task at computer startup can cause conflicts with each other and that can be a real problem too.

  4. It wouldn't be bad if it does not increase the CCleaner file size.

You can always try Cleanmem - this is a free program that will clean memory that is no longer used.

Does not work in the background all it does is every 30 minutes it cleans the memory automatically of a program that has been used and the memory left behind is no longer needed. This process takes a split of a second and you won't even notice it.

    Link: http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem

Read more about it at link above.

  5. When you have a 3,200 mhz machine with a gig of ram, you just don't care if it takes longer, since "longer" is still short anyway.

In addition, deleting PF files could have a very positive affect.

Ever wondered what happens on malware infested machines that have been cleaned of malware, & windows still tries to load non-existent malware entries on startup which slows things down?

Think about the bright side of this!

Sorry but I agree with Nerdfencer too. Besides if you were to have a malware program once you clean your system just go and check out the prefetch folder and delete the malware program's file manually.

  6. May I be one of the first to disagree?

This would take a month of Sundays to run, scan the entire contents of the disk, sort in filename order, report back duplicates.

There may well be, in a system of hundreds of thousands of files, a returned list of many thousands of duplicates/triplicates/nplicates.

How would a user know what the function of these files is?

How would a user know which duplicate is safe to remove, and which is not?

The forum would be filled with users complaining that their software doesn't work anymore.

I don't want this foolish bloat in CC.

Sorry but I have to agree with Augeas on this one. Before I would even want to clean a duplicate I would wanna make sure I don't really need it and also note that some files may have same name but can be different for example one can be an exe file and another can be a bat file and so on. So with that in note CCleaner would become slow to use since before deleting these so called duplicates we have to spend a big amount of time making sure we don't delete something needed later.

  7. Defraggler currently allows you to specify file types that should be pushed to the back of the hard drive.

What I would also like to see is the option to push the contains of specific directories to the back of the hard drive.

For example, I archive 'everything' I download on the web, from the latest Defraggler updates to the NVIDIA drivers, and usually I only use these things once, this goes along with a lot of other junk and scrap files that I do not delete simply because I have so much space.

I believe in the usual use/fragmentation and defragmentation processes these small yet plentiful files get nested in between a whole lot of more important blocks of files.

If I could simply specify defraggler to push all these fairly infrequently accessed files to the back of the harddrive by telling it where they are stored. In my case it would be the Downloads folder, everything gets downloaded to my desktop, and then when I'm done with them I drop them in the downloads folder, which would eventually be moved to the back.

At the moment all I can do is specify extra large exe files on one disk to be moved to the back. ( Or do them individually. )

Great idea I like this can come handy.

  8. I would appreciate if Defraggler would offer in the next release the option to reduce the size of the squares representing the defragmentation. Smaller size means finer granularity means more informations.

Furthermore I miss some explanation of the colors for the squares.

Where do I find this information?

    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,

You can find information about the colored squares by opening Defraggler and go to Help and click Drive Map Legend.

I also suggest that you read about this program's documentation so you can learn more about it's functions and understandign oh how this program works.

    For documentation go to:

    http://docs.piriform.com/ccleaner

  9. When I started Defraggler it consumes almost all the CPU capacity. The WinXP desktop is nearly frozen.

Even when set the priority in TaskManager to "idle" all CPU power

    is attracted by Defraggler.

    I suggest to

    a) Introduce a "Pause" button which suspends the defragmentation process until it is resumed again

    and

b.) implement more cooperative multitasking. When another program requests some

CPU capacity then Defraggler should be willing to reduce its own share.

    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,

Defraggler already has a pause button. When you open Defraggler look at the bottom of this program and you will see a pause button.

  10. The only thing I can think of is if you're using winapp2.ini and have used this cleaner that's in it:

    [*Windows Update Logs]LangSecRef=3025DetectFile=%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\LogsDefault=FalseFileKey1=%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs|*.*

Thanks for the quick reply Andavari.

Yes I do have winappi2 and use it with CCleaner. Though if what you are saying is true than why is Windows Updates still keeping the Review history Updates of this last week when I use CCleaner to clean with same options several times a day.

Anyone can actually confirm this or is it a Windows Update problem.

Also can anyone check if they are having this issue too. Just curious.

  11. Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can confirm an issue I am having with Windows Updates when going to the Review History Updates.

As of a week now when going to check the Review History Updates via Windows Update I noticed only this last week of items showing in the Review History Updates. Whereas before I would have pages of all the items I have ever downloaded from Windows Updates and showing if failed or successful.

My question is can this be happening because of CCleaner or maybe an option I have enabled in CCleaner?

Not blaming CCleaner .. it is a good program but just want to make sure and see if also others have noticed this behavior in Windows Update.

NOTE: I do not have the option "Hotfix Uninstaller" ticked in CCleaner.

    Thanks in advacne.

  12. Windows XP SP3

Hi all, ive been trying to defrag my 1terybyte drive for days now, it was basically full besides like 60gb of free space

i used defraggler several times, both as normal runs, and as just single defragment runs.. all runs werent very successfull and only freeup some minor space and defrag some files...

my problem is most of these files that are fragmented are big files all 700+mb and a few 1-8gb ones... clearly those takeup more space then simple normal files. so after several runs i even ran jkdefrag once or twice and nothing showed promiss still holding 100-150gb of defragmented files i didnt know what to do.

    1. i then removed about 150gb worth of data onto another drive hoping to freeup a lot of space. then ran defraggler several more times, no improvements. i used all options, defrag freespace (no fragmentation), i did normal runs where it defrags and places files in order, and i also tried single file defragmentation all of which did little to nothing in the long run and this is with 300gb free space 632gb used space on a terabyte drive i was getting annoyed

    2. i then ran jkdefrag again, at first i thought it defraged a lot of my files on default run, but maybe i was wrong. jkdefrag with this extra 300gb space finally worked, and was able to make large open sections on my drive due to its whatever fragmentation method. i was finally happy.

i have a screenshot of what it looks like at this point now, and what it originally looked like. the main problem originally was that i guess there were few sections that were big enough to hold the large files but there should of been plently of spaces to move files to make room to defragment others id imagine but i suppose i was wrong. and even with 300gb of free space defraggler which i have been using for a while let me down.

anywho this is what it looks like right now, i selected almost all the defraged files which are highlighted in red in this picture for individual defragmentation, and i will post the outcome which will be ready in a few mins. i am hoping that all files were defragmented and if not... i do not understand why maybe someone can explain to me why not...

as long as there is space, i dont understand why something would remain defragmented?

i am here just sharing my experience, i am still uncertain which program i like better btw defraggler, jkdefrag, and i used to use a program i thought i really liked but it isnt free and therefor stopped using it called

i also used diskeeper and the other big one umm another hug commerical one in the past, but have since used them due to size, cost, and other things, i dont like programs installing running processes

so all im looking for are some reasons why i cannot fully defragment my drive? its all data there shouldnt be any or many system files at all. and im just sharing my experience with a big drive full of all sized files

    thankyou, my first post

    Hi,

If it's pagefiles or programs in use they can't be defragged. For pagefiles you have to use another program called PageDefrag from sysinternals which you can download from here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897426.aspx

If the files are in use you may be able to defrag after rebooting.

So if I were you I would use Defraggler to analyze your drive first and than you can click with mouse on the red blocks that indicate fragmented to learn if in fact it is pagefiles and programs in use that need defragment.

  13. When I use CCleaner it clears the "Recently Used File List" in Excel 2003, but doesn't clear them in Word 2003, though the settings are the same for both through Tools, Options. Is there some way to eliminate this annoying feature?

    hi Marv1920,

I don't use Word and Excel 2003 I use Office 2007 and when I go to advanced I have an option of shoing the amount of recent files.

I have set it to show 0 (zero)

I'm sure there is an option in Office 2003 where you can do this.

  14. You think that four clicks to clean your registry is onerous? You've probably used up five years worth of registry cleaning clicks typing your post. Use one of Homer's nodding birds (I'll get told off for awarding you the Helper Monkey prize).

No way ccleaner is fine just the way it is for confirming if you want to fix registries. I'm sure ccleaner do not want to have people complain that there computer is no longer running well because of what the registry fixing did.

Besides if you don't want the confirmation just untick the option in the Advanced from ccleaner where it says "Show prompt to backup registry issues.

Ofcourse if you do this it is your responsability if something were to go wrong.

  15. Already checked the troubleshooting area of the docs before I posted (after all, that is Plain Common Sense)... There is nothing there that explains how to recover 30GB of missing space... It only mentions that System Restore will create a restore point (which it DID NOT) and that it takes up space... Since this DID NOT happen... how do I go about recovering the 30GB of missing space (yes I know I just repeated myself, but). And, turning off System Restore and deleting all existing restore points, turning off Hibernation and deleting all Hibernation resources did not recover the 30GB that is now missing...

Also, had this running on another computer with Vista.. It just finished about an hour ago (again, took approximately 26 hours to complete) and this 2nd computer is also now missing approximately 30GB of HDD free space... It had 134GB free before running Defraggler and now only has 104GB free.. and it too DID NOT create a restore point..

So need to know what's going on here and how to fix this.. 30GB of HDD space is not something to just be able to toss away... This is valuable and needed space that I cannot afford to loose.

Have you tried restoring with system restore to an earlier point before using defraggler.

  16. I have an Acer machine which has 2 partitions on it (C and D) and another hard drive as slave.

When I defrag the C it now shows about 1.4 lines of mostly blue but some red then 3.6 lines of white followed by 2 lines of mostly red.

I have ran the defrag several times and it does not improve.

When I defrag E it shows about 1.1 lines of all blue with only two reds but several blues scattered throughout the rest of the white and a few reds as well. At the bottom row right are 4 reads and several golds.

Every time I click on defrag it starts and runs for about 15 mins moving stuff around but when finished not much seems to have changed.

What is going on and what is the solution? (I did an update before I started.) - jb

Maybe someone here at the forum can help you if you can give the files that are not being defragged.

  17. I have a 20 gig C drive with less than 500 megabytes space available. I also have an external hard drive with more than 450 gigs of space available. I want to defrag my C drive, but it appears it will take forever given the small amount of space available on C. Is there any way I can make use of the large amount of space available on the external drive (drive E:) ?

What I would do in your case is move all large files such as audio and video files to external hard drive and than defrag C Drive with defraggler.

Than once C Drive is defragged move audio and video files from external drive back to C Drive.

This way you will have enough space free for defraggler to work well and also it will defrag faster since less files to move around.

    Hope this helps.

  18. It seems that the "Priority" setting is not saved. If I set to Background and close the program, after a restart it is back to Normal...

Is this a bug or a feature?

I would prefer the setting to be saved, as DF slows down my computer a bit in normal mode. (Yes, I have scheduled it to run at 4am and yes, I do sometimes need to work then...)

    Please let us know :)

    EM

Yes I to have noticed that the priority when set to background is not saved. I also noticed that ever since defraggler has the interactive for checking blocks it is slower or sluggish on my computer.

  19. You can view the Defraggler documentation site to learn about it. With it being closed-source software only the developer could divulge information of it's inner workings which seems rather unlikely to happen. The only thing I can tell that I know for sure is that it uses the Microsoft API for defragmentation, actually most defrag tools do.

For differences between defrag programs I'd recommend reading Donn Edwards Great Defrag Shootout.

I just wanted to add that with Defraggler you can defrag only files and folders that need defragment instead of having to do a full disk defragment which will take time.

  20. Is a flash drive and other defrag program can.

    Hi Phoval,

It is not a good idea to defrag usb flash drives. It will tear and wear out your flash drive faster.

The reason for this is because the way usb flash works. For example if a usb flash drive can be rewritten 1000 times it will shorten the amount by defragging it.

For a better understanding on how a usb flash drive works search the forums or google it.

  21. TheDon,

I use AVG 8.0 and Defraggler. I haven't done a defrag since AVG was updated (I believe it was Friday when the updates were released) but I will let you know what happens when I get home this evening.

    Keith

    Hi Keith,

Today when I started my computer I tried defragging those 3 log files from AVG 8.0 and Defraggler was able to complete the job.

Now I believe the reason it worked this time was for one of these 2 reasons below:

    1. Probably because the computer was restarted.

    2. Or possibly because before defragging I had installed the winapp2 zip and used ccleaner to clean *AVG 8.0 that came with winapp2 instalation and the 3 ABG log files that could not be defragged were the ones that were cleaned.

Anyways let me know what happens with your computer I am still interested in knowing. I also noticed that AVG 8.0 new components update has more items listed in task manager. I used to have 28 process running before AVG update whenever all programs are closed and after AVG update I have 30 process shoing in task manager. The 2 added items come from AVG. Also wanted to mention that there was an 3rd one added at first but when I cleaned it from ccleaners registry it was no longer there. It was listed as non existance program. I guess AVG left somethings behind that were no longer needed with the new AVG 8.0

  22. Anti virus applications lock their files at boot up to prevent tampering by malware and even though you stop the anti virus they are still locked.

It's funny it never did this before. Although the other day AVG updated new components where I was asked to restart windows and this update changed AVG in the way it works.

Anyone else who has AVG 8.0 with latest updates have same problem?
