  1. Hi Folks-

Finally got this done. Tshooting done on a Compaq desktop, VistaPSP2, Admn/Std/Std. Stock CCv2.19 (no exclusions.)

    Cookie cleaning, no problem.

Registry scanning showed 4 Symantec/Norton issues: 2 "Unused File Extensions" and 2 "ActiveX/COM" Issues.

    Unused File Extensions: Symantec.NCO.BHO, HKCR\Symantec.NCO.BHO; and Symantec.NCO.Toolbar, HKCR\Symantec.NCO.Toolbar.

    Activex/COM Issues: InProcServer32\C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.2.0.7\SymClgX.dll

    HKCR\CLSID\{whole bunch of numbers...}; and InProcServer32\C:\Program Files\Norton Support\tgctbr.dll

    HKCR\CLSID\{whole bunch of numbers...}.

I let CC fix the Unused File Extensions, no Norton Issues. I did NOT CC fix the other 2. One or both is the problem. Probably all 4 should be put on CC's "exclusion" list.

Rolled on thru the other 2 users, Norton tests OK.

    So there's the good news.

    Part 2, The "Bad News":

CC smacked HP's "Total Care" program and the Admn user's "Windows Sidebar" (.dll probs on logon).

"Merge" didn't work, Sys Restore didn't work. Oh @#$!. HPTC is useless fluff, so I uninstalled it. I couldn't fix the sidebar; had to open another Admn User acct and move the files over, luckily not too many.

I don't know why that happened, but I have uninstalled CC2.19 for now. The other 2 that have Norton are Toshibas, (so no HPTC) but I'll have to watch CC reg CAREFULLY, or just not run it. I don't see that the new CC has anything for the Norton issues; hopefully it won't smack AVGF8 and Avast, which I've put on mine and other computers. Rolling back to CCv2.10 might be an option...... ;)

  2. Hi Folks-

I'll prob tshoot to find WHICH thing that CC's slamming. Might be easier than the excusion method, maybe....

    Back to it.

    Hi Folks-

Sorry I haven't had time to finish this CC/Norton thing up yet. The "Computer Gods" claimed the life of my old-old XP laptop. Doorstop or full OS reload, etc. I haven't decided yet. Blew a mobo on my old-old trusty Compaq W98SE/XPPro desktop, fixed that. Hopefully, that'll be it for awhile....

    Anyway...so many Norton/Symantec files....

Vista users (like me): note that "Program Data" is prob a hidden file. Unhide first so CC can list it.

Check the cookies: you'll prob see one like www-secure.symantec.com, keep it.

Registry entries will include both "Norton" and "Symantec".

I'll prob tshoot to find WHICH thing that CC's slamming. Might be easier than the excusion method, maybe....

  4. Hi Folks-

    Toshiba laptop, VistaSP2.

Yep, it did it. Had to run the Norton tool, reinstall and update. About every version from v2.13 up has hit Norton, but usually it's just a matter of updating from scratch. Not too bad, so I never applied the exclusions posed by Andavari back in 9/08. Then the new v2.19 wiped Norton out. I didn't see anything unusual in either the cookies or the registry. Yes, Nergal, I did read 'em all and do the backup, but I was unable to merge the backup. No luck with system restore either. B) Does CC hate Norton? No probs w/AVG and Avast.

I see there's a new v2.20 and some newer instructions by MrRon, so I'll check that out prior to running CC on the other 2 'puters w/Norton. Any tips (other than to dump Norton)?

    Thanks.

  6. Tray has the clock, NetMedic (old benign prog to show download speed, site connection health, etc), Syshook, Teatimer, Directcd, Loadqm, Atiptaxx, Stimon, Rundll32, Systray, Imgicon, Ashmaisv, Ashwebsv (I think the last two are for Avast AV prog).

    Hi Aage-

Ashmaisv and Ashwebsv are for Avast, being the mail scanner and web shield functions. You also may see Ashserv, this is the Standard Shield function. I did a search on the Avast.com forum and did not see any threads pertaining to any conflicts between Avast and Ccleaner.

  7. Hi Gary.

As I've said mine are PC100 chips because my system is 10 years old. You say you've tried 1, 512MB but it wouldn't work so you need 2, 256MB. You can't buy PC100 new any more and PC130's my be getting hard to find. I did a search on eBay and found 2, 256MB in Hong Kong for ?20 inc; P+P 18 months ago. I had another 128MB in my old motherboard so now I have 639MB.

    Defraggler doesn't work with Win9x/ME Gary. ;)

    Hi Keithuk-

Pardon my laziness by doing a "2fer" reply last time. Yep, good PC100's are hard to come by, that's why I strip'em out prior to taking friend's/family's old 'puters to the recycler. PC133's are even rarer, but still can be bought for $$ (Kingston) limited size/stock. Thanks for the info on Defraggler.

  8. Yes, low memory is not helping. I actually thought I had found some cheap, just received 2 sticks of PC133 512MB today, installed them, turned it on and got a single long beep that kept repeating itself. Took out one of the 512s, same result. Obviously a mismatch, so back to 128MB, working as before.

    Hi Aage and Keithuk-

I'm fixing a Compaq desktop similar to yours. Compaq 5BW130/Celeron with a Compaq 06C0H mobo. Orig had W98SE, upgraded to WXPProSP2 ? FAT32 with W98SE in another partition (D), 15GBHD (full!). Had PC133 256MB RAM with slot 2 empty. Specs say 512MB RAM max, but only 256MB max PER SLOT (1x512 won't work-tried it). And... to get slot 2 to read I had to update the BIOS to the "newest" of 4/18/01 (HP BIOS update addresses memory upgrades and using additional Intel products). I only have another 128MB card, so I'm at 384, until I scrounge up another 256MB. (I even might try a P3 if I can borrow one.)

In reading a bit about this model series I found that they came with W98SE or early XP(Home); some used PC100 cards, some used PC133; most had Celeron, but some had P3. All had max 512MB RAM max/256MB max per slot IF you did the BIOS update. Wotta mess! (well, parts is parts...)

I had a worry about Ccleaner running with FAT32 and a nearly full HD, but Ccleaner (2.15) and Defraggler both worked great!

So if you're concerned with memory, check for a BIOS update , throw in a 256 or two, and try Cc again. :D

  9. Hi Folks-

Just tried this tool a few days ago on a nearly full and messy 15GB HD (250MB free after cleaning). The normal Windows tool just couldn't handle the job. It took quite a while with 2 or 3 runs, but it did the job. I cleaned up the hd more (now @5gb free) and ran it 2 more times: another good result. Everything works.

Thanks for the cool tool! :D

  10. Hi all

    Thanks for your answers.

@G Goldblum & RedDawn: I've tried your solutions but still CCleaner does only clean the admin account.

However, I think I got a hint, something I didn't mention to you guys cause I didn't think it was related.

The admin account and the standard account are NOT on the same domain. My standard account is part of my corporate domain, whereas the admin account is local to the machine (not a network admin) . As Cc was installed from the local admin account, maybe it can't access my standard domain account?

It would certainly be the first software that I've installed with the local admin that has this behaviour, but it's not impossible...

For example I tried to change the "owner" of the file CCleaner.exe, which was the local admin, to the standard user. But windows refused, asking for the network admin permission (which makes sense).

Maybe I'll try to have the network admin install Cc on the standard account instead?

    Any ideas on your side?

    Hi Nightbird-

You just HAD to make this difficult! (Harr-har). So you were unable to put a Cc icon on your Standard User account because it's actually NOT a Standard User account? So you also weren't able to access your computer's C:Program Files/CCleaner folder from your (Non)-Standard User account and either run it from there or do RedDawn's method? You are correct about the corporate domain- you'll need to talk to your Network Admn. He/She may not want users doing these things, and may not allow it. Read the sticky "Running CCleaner over a domain to clean profiles" and talk to your Network Admn. That's why they make the big $. ;)

  11. After I run the cleaner then pull AOL up, it always has to search on connection options, like it forgets or does the cleaner erase how we connect to AOL???

Does the cleaner erase it or could it be something else???

    Hi ILG49-

    Need more Info.

AOL Dial-up? AOL Broadband? AOL Version? If Dial-up, are you using the "Best-Connect" feature?

I have AOL Dial-up on my HP Desktop, but do NOT use the "Best-Connect" feature. I also have AOLDU as a backup connection on my laptop (normally use wireless).

Ccv2.13.720 did bang up the HP's AOL this past Tues, but it was the user order, and fixed by visiting the AOL Account screen name page to reset the user list. First time this has ever happened.

AOL is also upgrading (again), judging by the number of connection drop-offs lately, that may have contributed to the problem. AOL is really pushing their web-based stuff and dial-up will soon be gone!

Does your computer also have wireless capability? Sometimes if that's left on, when you try to dial-up it'll confuse AOL and sent it into connection set-up mode.

What do you do (other cleaning, defrag, etc.) prior to running Cc?

  12. Hi all

I've installed CCleaner on my PC with Vista. To do this, I had to log in as Admin, and I also tried installing under my bormal user account with "run as admin" command. When I run CCleaner from my normal user account, the UAC kicks in and I need to enter my admin password (that makes sense). But then when it runs, CCleaner then cleans only the personal files, caches, temporary folders etc related to the admin account. It does not take care of the normal account where I launched it from in the first place.

Is there any way to get CCleaner to clean my normal user account, not the admin? Am I missing something?

    Thanks for any help!

    Hi NightBird-

Yep, you're only cleaning the Admn Acct.

This is so easy that even I could do it. For Vista- you want to put a shortcut icon in C:\Users\Public\Desktop.

Desktop is a hidden folder, so you'll have to type it in (or change folders properties). Do this from the Admn account. Right click, drag. You may choose whether you "copy" or "move". I "copy" as I delete it after cleaning- don't want the youts messing with it. Then log on each User and do your cleaning. It does work in a limited way for the Standard Users, but good enough.

BUT: be very cautious with the Registery function for the Standard User- You can still cause some damage!! That's why I delete the icon after Ccing.

Oddly enough, the UAC doesn't pop up for Cc in the Std User on my HP desktop.

    Have fun! :D

  13. I still use AVG 7.5 mainly for on demand scanning and I usually manually update daily.

    :) davey

    Hi Davey-

You're still on v7.5 and getting updates? I thought AVG quit supporting it at the end of August. Do you have the paid-for version? I really liked v7.5 Free. V8 Free is just sorta ok. <_<

  14. I noticed the discussion regarding "avg anti virus doesn't like downloads" and wonder if the AVG notification I am shown when it attempts to update is caused by CCleaner deleting some aspect of the AVG "update control CTF file." I am using AVG v8.0.175 on WinVista v6.0.6001 w/Service Pack 1Build 6001

I have encountered this problem several times now. After the first time I was unable to use AVG's automatic update, I went to their website and manually downloaded the latest virus definitions file. Upon restarting my computer the next time after that session I again encountered the "Invalid update control CTF file" problem when automatic update ran. Their website offers no information regarding the CTF file which prevented me from rectifying the situation I encountered. I then re-downloaded the full AVG software installation, uninstalled the version I couldn't update, and successfully installed the latest version of the software. After installation I updated the program to be sure I had the latest virus definitions update.

I had no problem with the AVG automatic updates for a few days of computer operation. Yesterday, I ran CCleaner and upon restarting the computer today I again encountered the "Invalid update control CTF file" problem. I searched the AVG website again for a solution to the situation and luckily found "1567: AVG update issue - Invalid update control CTF file" which provides a helper application that addresses this issue by deleting the corrupted CTF file. After running that app I was able to successfully utilize the automatic update function and install the latest virus definitions.

I surmise that CCleaner causes the corruption, and if it is in fact what causes it, I would like to avoid this hassle in the future. Any insight or suggestions regarding this issue?

    Hi Freezerock-

Do you have your CCleaner set to clean AVGF8? It normally won't, unless you set it up.

This AVG Invalid CTF file issue has been fairly common lately- scroll around at freeforum.avg.com and you'll see lots of threads. They finally put up a Sticky and FAQ that you used. Hopefully you saved it, as you'll need it again. I had to use it 3 times on my Vista laptop and twice on my nephew's older HPXP laptop toward the end of last week. I did not do any "Ccleaning" and do not have Cc set up to clean AVGF8 (forgot how). Hopefully, whatever is causing this increase in the Invalid CTF file issue will work itself out.

At least it's an easy fix. ;)

  15. It seems debatable as to whether it's a Norton/Symantec thing or a Firefox one.

Either way, it's the remnants of an Outlook Express plugin, and it can apparently be removed by running CCleaner (or regedit), in safe mode.

But, make sure you follow CCleaners "make a backup" dialogue before you send it on it's way, or, right click and "export" the key to a folder of your choice with regedit, before you delete it.

    Hi again DennisD-

    OK Fine- you were right!

Nothing relevant in the Guest User Account.

Deleted the reg item in Safe Mode, no problems- Norton's OK and happy.

    Thanks again!g. :D

Hi DennisD- Thanks for your reply. Nope, no Firefox.

The HP desktop didn't show this reg issue, but it had Norton IS 2008 prior to my loading the '09, whereas the laptops had Norton 360. I was thinking this was a 360 remnant, perhaps of 360's Automatic Backup feature?

    The Registry Editor shows it as Name: "ab" in an icon that looks like torn paper, with "(default)" beside it;

    Type: "REG_SZ"; Data: "IOutlookPlug".

I wonder if it's "stuck" in the registry of the never-used Guest User Account. I might messabout before doing your suggestion- no offense intended! ...and yes, I'm having fun with the emoticons.

    Thanks.g. ;)

  17. Hi Folks-

I just installed/ran CCleaner 2.12.660 on my niece's Toshiba Satellite L305D Laptop, (VistaSP1, MSOH&S), after uninstalling the OE Norton 360 and installing Norton IS 2009.

This Reg issue won't delete via Cc or RegEdit- "Unable to delete all specified values".

    Missing TypeLib Reference IOutlookPlug {4A3451BE-99E0-476C-AE7F-C2A5671AC22E} HKCR\Interface\{AC9CC9305-0A30-4015-92A0-0711EE24E720}

I did search and read a few other threads about this entry possibly belonging to Norton, but no one ever said "Yes it is". Was this ever decided? I won't worry about it if it's Norton's (or needed for something useful).

How would I get Cc to ignore it?

I did uninstall some program called "LogMeIn", some remote "mirror" thing- wanted to make sure it didn't leave anything behind.

I put NIS 2009 on the HP desktop (VistaSP1, MSOH&S) which already had Cc on it, and it didn't pick this file up.

I will be Ccleaning another niece's Toshiba laptop, identical to the one above, so some info would be appreciated.

    Thanks.g.

  18. Hi blacks3ven-

This may not apply to you, but.....

AOL could be causing the problems with their forced "upgrade" to AOL9.1. This bloated "upgrade" will take you directly to the internet with WebAOL as the home page and install a lot of add-ons, gadgets, etc. including AIM. They should have, but may not have offered a choice for this "upgrade". If you choose to "upgrade", do a custom install to slim up this bloated thing. I went through this with my VistaSP1 laptop and am fending it off on the older XPSP3 laptop (AOL9.0SE). Yep, we're still on dial-up.

  19. Hi again Gary,

Good to hear that you CCleaned your teenagers "closets".

Now we need your help and information.

    Bug fixers info-CCleaner 2.08"

I thought that you may run into the Administrator vs Std users inconsistency.

For a few versions now I have been trying to gather more data for the "bug fixers" as regards this situation.

Thank you for being so observant and reporting this.

The info as regards Vista edition, version, and format is critical. Also the facts regarding admin vs std user functions.

The following info will help others to come up with a solution.

These answers help to evaluate the problem.Just fill in the answers next to or below the questions?

Provide a list of your CCleaner.ini file.( Tick option for Save settings to INI file at Options > Advanced then close CCleaner. This file will be created in C:\Program Files\CCleaner folder.) OK, here goes:

Are you using a winapp2.ini file? No

Answer "Yes" if you do and please explain its contents or provide a brief listing.Otherwise answer "No".

Are you running with Administrator privileges. Yes

    CCleaner version ? 2.08.588

    OS,edition ,32bit or 64bit and version ? Vista Home Premium SP1 32bit, Directx V10.0 (?)

Browsers and ver.? IE7 as default (via AOL 9.0VR Dial-up), OE HP/Yahoo Home Page

Security software and ver? Norton IS 2008, both Windows Firewall and Defender OFF.

Other data you think might be relevant? Compaq SR5130NX Desktop, purch Sept 07

What did you do and then what happened? First, logged on all the users. Then cleaned with the OE tools (Disk Cleanup, IE Browsing History, Cookies, etc.). Then "moved" CCleaner sc icon from the Admn User's Desktop to "Desktop" at (C:\Users\Public\Desktop) to put an icon on every users desktop, verified OK.

CCleaned (incl Reg) Admn User. For Std User #1, I Rt clicked CC icon "Run as Admn", but it Ccleaned the Admn User again, not Std User #1! So, I did Lt click and Ccleaned (& Reg) Std User #1, then SU#2 and SU#3. Then at SU#3 I tried the Rt click "Run as Admn" again, but it Ccleaned the Admn User yet again! Then verified OK operation at each user. I then went through and moved the Reg backups to a floppy, which I'll hold for a week (yep, I cross-ref'd name to cc#) this will prevent "ooops" reg merging. Lastly, I went to the Public Desktop and moved the CC sc icon back to the Admn Users desktop (Std Users CC function didn't seem to be much less than the Admn Users, and the Reg thing worried me!)

    Oddities:

I found it odd that the UAC permission came up at the Admn User but NOT the Std Users! It did come up at the Std Users when I did the Rt click "Run as Admn" and asked for a password, as it should. Just for laughs, I tried C:\Program Files\CCleaner\ instead of using the CC sc icon with the same results.

I got a "Program Compatability" Warning! Problem Event Name PCA2. It lists 2 Files to describe the problem: appcompt.txt and Tab706F.tmp. The app file starts off with <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?> and continues on about filters, checksums, versions, etc. etc. I'm lousy at screen-capture stuff, I wish I could fax it to ya!

CCleaner worked fine regardless- I can live with a coupla oddities!

    Thanks,

    :) davey

Thanks for taking your time to make a report.

Davey- Sorry about the length- are you now sorry you asked? Take care.g.

  20. :D Hi Folks- thanks for your replies.

    C:\Users\Public\what th'!!

    Oh...the old "Hidden Folder" trick!

Typed in \Desktop. No problem. Dragged the icon there, and all went OK. Dragged it back out when I finished-no problem! Much easier than doing C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner in each User- unless I get paid per mouseclick!

Things went pretty well. The Rt click "Run as Admn" didn't work, just ran the Admn User's area again. So the Std Users were run as is with the limited capability. I didn't see much difference, it worked OK.

I found a coupla wierd things: From the Admn user the UAC comes up, but the Std users go right to the program (No big deal); and I found a compatability problem report with v2.8 (after my task was finished)- don't know why and not worried about it. Done deal! Thanks again for the help.

  21. Hi Folks-

Good product! Works good on my Vista laptop and my nephew's XP laptop, both single users w/guest turned off.

But- my sister's Vista desktop has multiple users (Admn + 3 Std). I read in an earlier thread regarding an XP PC to put an icon in each users desktop (Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop), but that Std users would have limited function.

Does this setup also apply to Vista?

Can it be "Run as Admn" (Rt click) for each user to get full function?

I'd like to clean up this computer and then delete all but the icon in the Admn to prevent "oopses".

I can put them back for the next cleaning. (After all, the PC is Admn + 3 teens).

    Thanks
