  1. I have to apologise in advance for this topic. Please do not construe this as a complaint, or otherwise an attempt to decry an excellent product. This is merely an observation. I am always evaluating products against my current toolkit and noticed the following when comparing CCleaner's registry tool against 'JV16 Power tools' (agreed, probably valueless, as I include no specific data here) JV16 returned (a confirmed) 135 missing file/folder registry errors against none for CCleaner after a sweep. Otherwise, JV16 confirmed (if you will) the quality of CCleaners registry tool. Finding nothing else CCleaner may have missed. So, to be honest, nothing to write home about....maybe. I did notice that CCleaner's registry tool appears to perhaps only look for 'Application Path' errors. Possibly, this is why general path errors were not fully picked up. Is this something that can be improved upon, or am I just nit picking..... Can I fault CCleaner otherwise? Hmmm.......Nope. Hey, you've even included multiple options for security 'swipe' passes ! Excellent product.
  2. Fair enough Davey, I think I know what you are getting at (the prefetch/temp files yeah ?) but can you clarify ? The idea behind this was to improve only defrag time for 'standard users' Those wishing to do a "default" defrag (Analyse - select all - defrag) will find themselves defragging a lot of restore/prefetch/temp files which will increase defrag time considerably. It's quicker than de-selecting those files (of which there can be legion) I did this for a seriously fragged machine as a one off 'power clean' Defragged, optimised contiguous free space, then turned the system restore back on and also ensured that I reduced the size available to the system restore (although that also is a judgement call) Anyway, the improvement in both defrag time and performance doing it this way was palpable (on that particular machine) However, I accept that this may not necessarily be the best advice for the average user. Thanks for pointing it out. Cheers Vambo
  3. Just a note to suggest using Sysinternals 'Pagedefrag' prog. in conjunction with Defraggler. Available here. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897426.aspx This simple prog will (if you select the option) Defrag your Pagefile (swapfile) at boot. Used in conjunction with Defraggler - your system will be about as optimised as you could wish without recourse to deeper level housekeeping. (I'll just mention that Sysinternals suite of free software was and still is the IT tech's best friend. It used to be independent, but Microsoft took 'em over and despite their promises, removed all access to codes. Denying independent and contiued development) Anyway.... grab it and the excellent 'Process Monitor' A further tip is FIRST : bin all the Windows Prefetch and temp files using CCcleaner and optimise the registry while you are at it. Do this prior to running Defraggler. Oh, and to make sure; turn off Windows System Restore and reboot - thereby 'deleting' gigabytes of fragmented restore files. You might want to switch it back on and create a single new restore point in case you **** your system though ! I'd like to see a pagefile defragger incorporated into any new release of Defraggler. Also (as mentioned elsewhere) a built in scheduler is a must have for any new release. Kudos for another excellent product. Sweet as ! .......tear along dotted line........
  4. I get the feeling people are panicking a bit about AVG 8.0 Free. I had my reservations as well. However, on closer inspection its all cool ! and no, there is no expiry of the e-mail scanning, despite all the scaremongering. That was simply confusion over 'Full trial version' and 'Free version' " But we hate all the bloatware and toobars and clunky site scanning " For those who prefer, and I recommend it - Strip out the 'Link Scanner' and toolbar options. (see below) You will be left with the simple antivirus you know and love. The only difference being that you have additional spyware protection. Since I would always recommend running at least two anti-spyware progs - what's the problem? Run your favourite and have AVG additional protection. As for sluggish scanning and bloatware; Well, rip out the LinkScanner and it isn't bloated in performance terms. No more a resource hog than v7.5 The scanning is marginally slower than v7.5, but it's scanning for Spyware as well....... besides, my deep scan's are run overnight so I don't care how long it takes. (1hr 15 on athlon dual 3600mhz 1gb RAM and 200gb H/d - 32 bit Vista) Should I want to scan individual files/folders AVG 8.0 Free still gives that functionality. The only bitch is the fact AVG have removed the ability to schedule specific periodic updates. you are restricted to a single user specified time. So, "How do we strip out the LinkScanner Vambo?" Check out grisoft forums FAQ 1338 : http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1241 Or, if you don't want to check out the forum - try copying the installation/setup file to the root of your hard disk and running the following command line ; either through 'Run' or at a command prompt 'cmd' C:\avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch (Replace the above with whatever your setup file is named) Then just 'NEXT' through the rest of the installation and that's it. AVG Free anti-virus is not done yet........ maybe next year, maybe the year after - but not yet ! version 8.0 is fine just fine
