    New Drive

well i have a friends computer over, a HELL 8400 Boot sector is gone. I had them contact dell support it's out of warranty they know it's been a repeating problem, but want fix it and I did some searching on the net about the problem and it seem that the Maxtor SATA drives in these computers are giving lots of boot sector problems. I ran several drive test and most failed. Question is I have never replaced a SATA drive before is it simply replacing the drive and reconnecting the power and SATA cable and reinstalling the OS if the drive picks up on boot or am I going to face a few more install procedures. Will be using a Seagate drive probably a 7200rpm 160gb. maybe smaller this drive was installed by dell before Seagate took over Maxtor.
  2. All the available updates are there whether you need them or not. Just go through and take the check off the ones you don't want and select don't show this update again.

  4. You can manually install the Windows XP backup utility from the Xp Home CD. To manually install Backup: 1. Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup: CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP 2. When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

    opera

I just went over to the opera forum and signed up using my gmail account as my email address then I checked my gmail. My reg. link had arrived there before I could sing into my gmail account. Might want to check your spam setting or security setting in your Hotmail and your Outlook Express accounts they may be a little to restrictive especially if your using a block all email addresses not listed in your address book type setup.
  6. Have the new version it only scans about 5000 or less files pretty useless at the moment till there get whatever the problem is fixed.

    emachines

I just recently rebuilt an eMachine that was just a year and a half old the motherboard went bad and they didn't even make the same board for it anymore the replacement was $150.00 and you couldn't even use the OS reinstall CD anymore. So I striped out the MB and the Celeron processor and replaced it with a Gigabyte MB and a AMD Sempron 3500 processor used the DDR ram off the board and fixed it for only $100. Thats about what you will face using eMachines.
  8. Well I totally under stand what your saying. I took the risk and lost but thats just the way it goes sometimes. This isn't the first instance that some software has crashed my system and it probably want be the last I'm sure. It's not exactly the way I wanted to go about getting rid of all this Norton stuff on my computer and start using my eTrust software. At least i will have a nice clean install.
  9. Well im back up but just barely alot to do yet but off to work for tonight start up again in the morning.
  10. Don't download or install the CD-ROM Emulator software just screwed up my system totally will have to do a total reinstall of everything, you cant even uninstall the thing all software programs lock up and will not run. Had to get on one of my other computers to just get back on the forum. Have to say one of the only programs I have ever had do this everything was working fine till the install so I have no dought it was the problem.
  11. Acrobat Professional installer will install your reader and your writer for PDF files. If you don't have a need to save document like in word or copy web pages as PDF files, then just download either Adobe acrobat reader or Foxit reader one. I just put acrobat reader 8 on my wifes computer its faster than 7 works fine.
  12. Reader allow you to read PDF files. The PDF/Portable Document File is created using Adobe Acrobat in most cases. OpenOffice also has a PDF creation tool although limited. However Adobes Acrobat is a program strictly to just create PDF files with control over ever part of the document such as photos, fonts, color separation management, etc. We use PDF files quiet extensively in our printing company to do proofing and to import/export files in and out of desktop programs like PhotoShop and Quark as well as overseas FTP uploads and downloads.
  13. You would think so but I have tried that in the past and nothing changed It has to do with the ASP.NET account that is loaded during windows updates once the ASP.NET account is installed it will prevent auto logon. Source http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/aspdot.php
  14. I'm not sure where I read this before in one of these forums but I remember somebody say when the installed NET. 2.0 there computer stopped automatically logging onto windows without stopping on the log on screen well I found this patch that fixes that I have tried it myself on one of my own computer and it worked. But use at your own risk. I'm not sure how long this link will be up since its off another forum. http://www.mediafire.com/?3omzzqmtoze
  15. Well I consider myself lucky I haven't had a virus in the past 4 years considering there 4 people using here. I did get one trogan on one of my computers but my security software picked it up when the fake email was opened and I was able to remove the remnants of it off my system. You just have to practice safe computing as best as possible along with a good security plan. One of the things that ticks me off the most is so many of the computer that I set up with good security and plain instructions on keeping them clean end up infested. When I check out the security programs they haven't been updated or even run but a few times if any you just want to throw up your hands at times. But they keep me in extra spending money.
  16. I haven't used that program but this is another free commercial Ver. Ashampoo Burning Studio 5. http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloads/214...-burning-studio I used it back when it was a pay program now I have Ver. 6 but Ver. 5 is a great program all to itself. you can still get it right now I just checked the download but it probably want be up much longer.

    Host files

I was curious as to where if I'm using the latest MVP,s host file do I need to continue using SpywareBlaster also.
  20. Hmmmm I'm wondering if it could be some type of video related plugin. The screenshot crashing part is odd though is this the only site that you have experienced problems with. Seems like I remember having something similar happen with and older version of Firefox did a clean reinstall and it fixed that.
  21. I'm not much into videos but this site may have some answers freeware and shareware are both listed here along with allot of helpful info on dealing with CD's DVD's and Video related topics. http://www.videohelp.com/tools
  22. I sent you an invite Cowboy maybe that will work out for you till you get your ISP based mail program sorted out.
  23. That web page is very slow loading didn't crash on me though but took forever to load a video. Firefox 2 has inline spell checking enable it under Options/Advance tab, on that tab under Browsing check the box check my spelling as I type.
  24. My regular ISP account for family and close friends. And 1 Gmail account for all my Internet sign ups.
