  1. Could be the case on some sites I been all over the net today doing allot of different things and so far no problems. I been keeping my eye open for that though.
  2. What is a referrer? When you browse a web site, it can collect various data about you, such as the Internet address of your computer, your region, Operating System, browser type, browser version, etc. Your web browser automatically sends this information each time it locates a new web site. One of these data is the referrer, which is the location of the last site you visited. Sites keep track of this data, mostly in a general way for statistical data and marketing research. There is a growing concern that online privacy is being infringed. To safeguard your privacy we recommend getting competent firewall software to block your browser sending information about you and your computer. I installed Online Armor FREE today and I ran as many test as I could find online the only thing this firewall didn't pass was the referer test found on PC Flanks so i did a little research and found the fix for Firefox to block these referer. I then restarted my browser and ran the test again and it pass. How to block http://cafe.elharo.com/privacy/privacy-tip...ers-in-firefox/
  3. Just curious if anyone has ever used this Firewall. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/filseclab.html
  4. Looks like it runs between 15 and 21K on normal,I have about 2 GB of RAM doesn't seem to slow me down any running or not that I have noticed. When I ran the test scan on my D: drive a while ago I did my normal Internet browsing and worked on some stuff everything seemed fine. I guess on a lesser machine it would be a problem.
  5. I understand about the hoops thing, not sure what they were thinking NOT but hopefully they will fix some of these issues,as far as resources go I'm currently running a scan on my D: backup drive, CPU is running at 1% Memory usage is up at about 20%. That being said I set my scanners to run after midnight anyways so it doesn't cause me a problem anyways.
  6. A couple thing I have found you can do to AVG 8. How to install AVG 8 without Link Scanner: Maybe some of you can figure this out I tried several different way to do this and I couldn't get it to work correctly. http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338#faq_1338 I ended up going to the tools menu on Firefox and IE 7 and just disabling it under the add-ons manager. It's still on the program interface but at least I don't have to deal with that dumb RED !!!!! To completely disable the notification drop-down, simply rename/move these two files in your AVG 8 directory. Worked for me. Program seem to run fine not sure if it will come back under future updates if so I will trash them again. I deleted these two files out of the C:/ Programs Folder/AVG 8 1) avgresf.dll 2) avgmwdef_us.mht ( file appeared in my folder as avgmwdef.)

    Adobe Reader

I have used this PDF Viewer for a while I really like it its about 1/8 the size of Adobe file size lots of functions and easy to set up and use. http://www.docu-track.com/home/prod_user/pdfx_viewer/
  10. I burn everything with Version 6.5 best and easiest burning software I have ever used, I bought mine though back at version 4. I have probably had maybe 5 coasters out of hundreds of CD and DVD disc. I use it to burn all my movie DVD's that I copy from Shrink or DVD Fab. Never had a movie that wouldn't play. Most DVD-RW are 4x disk anyways so it just takes longer to erase.
  11. I use WOT along with McAfee SiteAdvisor it seem to work very well it had even show sites McAfee said were safe to be bad or questionable. http://www.mywot.com/en/wot/home/
  12. I have Office 2003 on my computer also for what I do it does just fine all my other computer in the house use OpenOffice. If thats all I had I would be perfectly happy with that also most computers I build or fix that need a Office program get OpenOffice on it. I set it up to be cross compatible with MS Office.
  13. The Thermal paste that you scraped off is what transfers the heat to the heat sink you need to go to your local computer store and purchase you and new strip or tube of the paste and reapply that between your CPU and heat sink or your computer will continue to shut down as long as there is no thermal paste between them. Make sure both surfaces are totally clean before you reapply the new strip or paste. Artic Silver is one of the best you can order that or the strips from www.newegg.com Do not attempt to use your computer to you have dont this you could end up damaging your CPU.

  15. Did you updated the NVIDIA drivers lately and then started to experience the crashes. I did an update on one a few weeks ago and it started crashing right off so I rolled the NVIDIA driver back and it stoped crashing when i rebooted.

    New Drive

Well I replace the bad Maxtor drive with a Seagate 160 Gb. SATA I just pulled the old one and dropped in the new drive It picked it up on first boot. I reinstalled windows and updated added a few of my favorite programs to help keep the computer clean and free of junk and took it back to my friend everything went well thanks for all the help. Seagate was a big help I sent them the make and model # of the drive I had and they emailed me a list of 10 drives to replace it with including some helpful suggestions about installing the drive. Thats one reason I have always used there HD's

    New Drive

Not an option in the particular instance I don't think. You can't even get to that point, when you get to the XP start options page ie safe mode etc. It just locks up then boots to a blue screen with error message concerning the boot sector. This particular drive seems to have major problem not only on this computer but a few hundred others by the post I have come across so I'm just going to do this right to start with. I do appreciate the suggestion though. Thanks

    New Drive

I appreciate your very detailed instructions they will be very helpful. I'm printing out a copy for future use when I do the install. This is a Dell 8400 already set up to use the SATA drive I contacted Seagate and gave them the model # and S/N of the Maxtor drive since they own Maxtor now and they sent me a detailed list of compatible Seagate drives to choose from. I will probably go OEM since the power and the data cable are already there. BIOS is already set to CD boot from trying to reinstall XP to check out the HD. Thanks again
  24. I'm not sure why it used that particular wording just like Adblocker used the adblock tab over it blocked ads. Anyways I use the little program called Homer which places just a blank white space or a colored icon or anything of your choice jpeg. bitmap, or icon in its place. http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/14/32/ EXAMPLE
