This morning I checked again. The problem was still there. So, I dragged the file out of Start/Programs. Then I made a new shortcut and put it in Quick Launch. Works perfectly. The glitch has something to do with the Start process, although it works fine there on my other XP.

Hmm. It's a tricky one. First I made sure the path in this XP was the same as in the other. That made no difference--same path, but one works and the other doesn't. So then I returned to your original good advice, Tarun. With Task Manager running, I unchecked both Windows and Internet Explorer. For a few minutes, it looked like the problem was going to be with Empty Recycle Bin. Mine is complex, because there are 15 recycle bins. Not that that ever mattered before. BUT--it didn't follow through. Of course, by this time I'm testing with everything empty anyway. Very strange. And, no matter what it is, it is not a problem for my other CCleaners on my other XPs. (Altogether I have 4 XPs--two on each hard drive, each one in its own partition. I use this system for exactly this kind of thing--testing programs against themselves.) At the moment, no conclusion. I think there's something I still haven't thought of. Just in case I didn't make it clear before: once CCleaner shoves the CPU useage up to 100%, it never comes down again, until either a reboot or a log-off/log-in. You can use Task Manager to End-Task CCleaner, but the 100% CPU useage is jammed up there.

Thanks, Tarun. Yes, I've looked at them--but there is something else here, that I've just discovered. I run several XPs on this single computer, on a multi-boot system using 15 partitions. It just occurred to me to try a different XP. I tend to work from only one for a few days at a time. In the other XP--on the same computer--no problem at all, with CC 1.19.108. It is still working perfectly, as it always used to. So, the problem is with my setup on the first XP--which actually seems to be my best-setup XP! Now, the really big difference between those two XPs is mainly in the Startup Programs array. The one at fault has a beautifully tweaked system--ha ha! beautiful, but obviously it contains the problem! I can't guarantee it isn't something else, but I'll look there. And I have found that System Security Suite (3 S) does the same thing--it takes 100% of my CPU, which is not a problem in itself UNTIL I give it its second command, which causes the same freeze. No other programs show any problems. Both CCleaner and SSS are system cleaners, so I think it's in there somewhere. But the two registry cleaners I use are fine. Very interesting. It's got to be something to do with Startup, so the next thing I'm going to try is to move CCleaner to a different starting location and try from there.

1.19.108 is freezing my XP Pro SP2 system on a 1.7 Cel 512 RAM. I've use CCleaner for quite a few months, updating versions along the way. It has always been extremely fast. Suddenly with this version it is hesitant. It gives me one analysis and puts my CPU useage up to 100%, freezing the system and locking it into a wait mode that neither CCleaner nor any other program can get out of. Task Manager can End-Task CCleaner, but the 100% freeze remains. I can get out of that with Task Manager's Restart. The START >Restart is not available when the system is frozen. Clean registry, totally clean system; Spybot, AntiVir Personal, ZA; ediwo scanned; just no problem there. Celerons are notoriously cache-strapped, but previous CCleaners worked flawlessly. EDIT: I should add that I have moved a lot of files around in my Start Menu Programs recently. They work nicely and nothing seems wrong. Also my registry cleaners work without any problems. I mention this only because maybe it offers some clue. It SEEMS as though the problem is with CCleaner, but I don't see anyone else protesting the new version. ??? Thanks.
