  1. I use it, but rarely

    I have the RSS feed

Please note, there is no support plan and no free upgrades for any apps you might download from them, still they've some good stuff,

Basically you are right with a few exceptions. There are a few giveaways that are licenced forever (like Glary utilities pro, for example )but you have to be almost a psychic to know that before you download, as the site does not supply that info.

  2. I have been reading the forums and am confused regarding registry backups. I have always assumed that SYSTEM RESTORE POINTS (using XP SP3) would include the registry. Is this wrong or if correct why is it neccessary to do a separate backup before touching the registry. If anyone can shed light on this I would be grateful.

Your assumption is correct, SYS Restore includes the registry restoration.

It is not necessary to back up both , but sometimes , for example, when you want to Install a program ,try it , uninstall it and restore registry backup (assuming you backed up prior to downloading... ) and then you will not have a trace of the program you tried in your registry, without having to make a SYS RESTORE point. Hope I made it somewhat clear.

  3. Exactly! That's what I do since System Restore would wipe out any ERUNT backups made before the System Restore point was made. That's one reason it's good to let ERUNT automatically make a daily registry backup then you don't have to worry about it or forget to make a backup.

Yes, but still before any "play`n around" with the system ,I`d make a manual ERUNT backup + SYS restore point right after that and then I`ll do whatever I`d like ,safely enough....

  4. No conflicts that I've ever encountered, however I try to keep my System Restore points current to when I made an ERUNT backup, i.e.; after uninstalling software, or after updating software such as Windows Updates.

The advantage of ERUNT is that it can really save you if a System Restore point ever fails, at least with ERUNT you can get a good working registry back.

Hi Andvari ,the event you described is the exact reason that evoked this question.

In my understanding, the system restore point, should always be made after ERUNT backup is made otherwise , the system restore will get us to the point prior to ERUNT backup !

  5. Hi

As per SIW and Speccy`s diagnose:CPU is around 56 degrees (celsius) Please advice if CPU`s(AMD ATHLON dual core) temperatures is OK under that temperatures considering it is summer here and PC well ventilated.

    Thanks.

  6. This is a response to the discussion in posts #457 through #461 of the thread "Freeware !"

    http://forum.pirifor...showtopic=17921

I thought it was better to discuss Cleanmem in a separate thread.

So, cleanmem is a memory manager that uses Task scheduler to start every 30 minutes (the default setting). But the user can change that value by simply going to Task Scheduler and change that setting to whatever he/she wants it to be.

After it has started and has performed it tasks the program closes and doesn't start again until it's (re-)started again by Task Scheduler. Just take a look at Task Scheduler and you'll see Cleanmem has added a task to the Task list.

To be able to see what Cleanmem does the user can tell the program to record its actions in a log, a text file. That log reveals which processes (as in displayed in Task Manager) are curtailed in their memory usage by Cleanmem and by how much. And the default setting is that Cleanmem reduces/collapses the size of the System File Cache as well.

I DO see a significant difference in performance ! Previously, it could take Real Player a significant amount of time to start playing a *.mp3 file but after installing Cleanmem that time has been reduced significantly by, say 50 to 90%.

    Cleanmem can be downloaded here:

    http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem

Here the user can find a lot of additional program info.

And the most important thing: it's freeware !

Hi 'Willy2', I can see a substantial system performance improvement already .Thank you.

  7. Personas are backgrounds for FF's toolbars, like this : https://addons.mozil...ox/addon/10900/

However, what the screenshots don't say (but the reviews do) is that you can only use the default theme (Strata). If you use a different theme, Personas will be disabled. And since the default theme is quite ugly...well...Personas aren't a useful feature at all. Besides, it seems you have to register in the Personas website if you want to save the recently used Personas...<_<

Thanks for your reply. Other than the Persona`s matter,is the load on resources higher or lower than the previous version?

  8. Hi

Can any of you FF users advice if v3.6.6 is any better than the previous version (V3.5.10)?

I know the addons are separated from the FF process, what are the implications ?

Is the load on resources different ?

    Thanks

  9. Here's the list of most important changes:

    - improved interaction with Windows System Restore; namely, avast now auto-repairs itself when it detects a corrupted VPS due to a System Restore (or other reasons)

    - aswSP.sys: solved a minor stability issue

    - solved a problem related to inserting of the license files

    - added the activation code feature

    - solved a problem when avast was progressively slowing down (especially in conjunction with the screensaver)

    - performance improvements in the Behavior Shield

    - avast Screen saver now accessible even in 64-bit Windows Vista

    - stability improvement in aswTdi.sys (solved a compatibility problem with AVG)

    - IS firewall: solved a potential BSOD condition

    - various improvements in the avast! sandbox module

    - minor fixes in the GUI

    - added Catalan and Belarusian language packs

Users of any previous version of avast 5.x can go to this build by simply invoking the program update feature from within the program UI.

  10. 3.6.4 is not a beta version. It's the most recent stable version. 3.5.10 is an older version that they are still providing security updates for. It will be discontinued at some point in the near future. Mozilla always provides updates for older versions for a while after a new version comes out.

If it is an old version (3.5.10)I still don`t understand why both versions were realeased at the same date.

  11. ie plugin is an ie plugin

For your information:FF IE plugin uses the IE engine you already have in your pc, meaning that if you have IE 7 in your computer, the IE plugin you use still uses your IE !!!!
  12. neither - Why bother with IE at all? i heard so many bad things about ie8. You do realise there is a ie plugin for ff

As previously mentioned, there are some sites that require IE to fully function with the browser, otherwise I really wouldn`t bother. The thing is that it irritates me to browse so much slower with IE7(than with FF) and I thought that may be IE8 will ease the pain.... ;)

  13. Hi

I generally use FF but there are some sites that work best with IE. I have IE 7 and it is deadly slow comparing to FF. Question : Judging from your own personal experience,is IE 8 faster/better than IE 7?

  14. Have i understood you correctly....You use a virtual environment all the time, In that virtual environment you have a, Anti virus, Some sort of real time, and a firewall?

I use the virtual environment only when I`m in the internet, the protection works from outsite of the virtual environment but it also covers the virtual(although there is no real need for it) .

  15. Hi, Eli. :)

I run either Powershadow or Time Freeze to prevent any changes to C: drive. 1 or 2 times in the past year I have contacted something that shut the computer off and restarted it. With PS running, any changes were gone when it restarted, so if it was malaware it didn't install.

Sandboxie serves a different purpose. Any changes, downloads, java junk, go to the sandbox and can be viewed in windows explorer. So if something is worth keeping, I just copy it over from there to a permanent location, and if necessary, restart and reinstall it with PS turned off. Also you can securely delete the sandbox if you wish.

More involved, but saves grief in the long run, imho.

Also imho common sense will not keep you safe. I have often contacted malaware on a harmless looking site.

Sorry if this is too long winded or simplistic. No offense meant...but sometimes I read (on other forums, not here of course) posts that are so tightly written that I have to google for 30 minutes to figure out what they mean.

I personaly use Sandboxie and if I use the program all the time I`m surfing, I fail to se where the security whole is if in addition to that I also use a good AV,AS and FW,so the question here is what are the chances that you`ll get infected using all this weaponry, that justifies an additional virtual protection?

  16. No particular reason. I guess just because it was available -- pretty light on size and resources -- and it was free. So, thought it was worth giving it a try.

Do you find that this program adds up functions or does anything that Sandboxie does not do ?
