  2. Hi experts, this is more of a general interest question, I was questioned about whether a Mac os could be placed on a PC, and if so, what kind of problems could result from it, and while we're on the topic, would it be the same with putting a windows os on a mac? PS: is it better to post these general questions in the lounge or somewhere else, or is this fine here? thankx
  3. DJ, I may have misunderstood your last post? are you saying that you can receive a new product key and os cd for Windows? I just bought a new computer but Dell told me they don't give out the os cd's anymore becasue you can get everything you want from system restore, but i'd still prefer to have the cd so that i could do a complete re-install without all the pre-loaded crap from Dell. Also, is this considered sketchy, i mean, if i borrowed a cd from a friend wouldn't i be able to get a free key? a little confused on what this process allows, thankx for the input THANKX DJ FOR THE CLARIFICATION
  4. i ran system restore hopeing it would reset, but it told me no changes had been made, is this the type of thing that wouldn't come up on a System Restore, because i havn't changed any settings that i can think of, idonno what to do, i gotta get some sleep, maybe the problem will seem simpler in the morn, or better yet, just fix itself, i love it when that happens thankx for your help all
  5. 1 more random question, does anyone know of a way to have a process meter display in the system tray all the time without actually having your task manger minimized on the bar? or a program that would do it? i like to know what cpu usage level i'm at by just looking at the meter. cheers
  6. truth be told, we're pretty close (friendship) with our neighbours, but the problem is i don't know where the signal is coming from. it works in three rooms of my house, two on one side of our house and the other upstairs on the other side, so i have no idea where its coming from. If i knew who's signal it was i would ask them about it, actually i would show them how to encrypt it so this wouldn't happen from someone else (someone who doesn't take their speed into consideration). as far as distance usually goes, i've heard up to three outer walls, and up to two house laterally away. It isn't just pure distance which interferes with the signal, but physical obsticals aswell. Do you still think i'm low?
  7. did i do that? if so where, i can't see it, and while we're on the issue of security, is there anyharm in showing a Hijackthis log on here, like showing any "private" info to other users? thankx
  8. I'm unsure if this is SW or HW, but for the past month or so i have been "borrowing" my neighbours wireless signal, its your basic linksys signal, anyway, today i went to use it and it all my programs say they can't find a server (IE, Firefox, MSN, etc). Anyway, Windows wireless device says the signal is still strong and active (and unsecured), can anyone here think of a reason why i can no longer access the internet? Also, if i use my dial-up conection i can access all the programs fine. Any suggestions??? Thankx, PS: I don't use his signal during peak hours or download/upload hgh volume, so i don't really see this as stealing...thankx again.
  9. thankx for the suggestions, i totally forgot about the custumize desktop, and you should have my email now if you want to send the gmail invite. I tried the YPOP program, I still can't figure out how to use Hotmail in conjunction with Thunderbird, Those instructions on the website are for Yahoo, they don't seem to work well for hotmail. If no one here can give me a more in depth instruction to use it, then i guess i'll try it with Gmail.
  10. a couple randoms i thought up: on my desktop i wanted to change some of my icons, do i need to deactivate some settings to allow me to change the icons for MyComputer and MyDocuments etc. there doesn't seem to be the option to change or update the icons. I'm using the rainlendar calendar on my desktop, i downloaded some additional skins but i can't figure out how to access them, any ideas? i was trying to set up the YPOP application with Hotmail and Thunderbird, anyone know if this is possible and how to do it? on that note, someone here said they had lots og gmail invites, anyone want to send me one, and how is that done?? thankx for any help you can provide.
  11. sorry, this is a little off topic, but what is a registry cleaner, what does it do? and PLEASE, don't just say "it cleans your registry"... could you go into a little more detail than that. thankx Thankx Alot DJ, just what i was looking for !
  12. englishmen, i have the same calendar as you from rainlendar, i downloaded some different skins, but i couldn't figure out how to access them, any suggestions?? also, where did you get that background?
  13. thankx TM, i'll try it tonite when i get home, JAGO, if you could send me the invite too that would be great, what do i need to do to get the invite?
  14. I like the way Thunderbird is set up, but it says i can't use it becasue it isn't compatible with Hotmail. is there a free email account service that is compatible with Thunderbird, say g-mail or yahoo? thankx, PS: This is more of an interest question than a problem...
  15. Maybe old in design but fairly new in reality, less than 2 years. I read somewhere else on the forums that an upgrade of 256 would more than triple the speed, is this the case or is that just BS? To upgrade this model by 512 is almost triple the cost to upgrade it by 256, is it really worth the extra? also, i'm fairly certain its SW free or close to it becasue i currently run SB, AdAw, and MSAS, but its probably all the useless apps that r running, i'll rid it of some of that junk and go from there. Thankx for the advice,
  16. my moms computer (only a year and a half old) has Xp home and it only has 128, when she first bought it it was fast, now its slow as can be, what happened, and before anyone says it, i know this is crazy small amount of ram, but why would they (compaq) put it on in the first place? and what would be a suitable upgrade at this point? thankx
  17. It seems like everyone i talk to says this is pretty difficult stuff, has anyone used/ heard of Dr. DivX? the info on the DivX site claims that this program is as easy as 3 steps, is this correct or am i missing something? Also, i'm not sure if this is the same thing or not, but instead of copying it to a CD, is there a way to rip the DVDs right to my hard drive to watch them at a later date? Your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated.

    DVD to CD?

Does anyone know of a program where I can put a DVD movie in my drive and rip it in such a way that it would fit on a Cd?
