  1. yes, i am 21 today, the second best age, next to 25, bc at 25 you can rent 15 passenger vans...anyway, and for this birthday, I get to enjoy my hardest exam with the promise of two more tomorrow. Ah the joys of school. Back to studying, c ya all later. And remember, today is special, so take time for yourself today...i give you permission.
  2. as for selling windows, it wasn't geared at vista AT ALL, it was more or a recruitment purpose than a selling one, his main topics (on the surface) were about technology and where we are going to be in say, 10 or 20 years. he showed Project Gothem Racing 2 on the new X-box 360, aparently he's not a great player, he kept hitting walls, then he had the computer take over for him. he also had a REALLY cool time of handheld, apparently customized for him. it takes his fingerprint, then he can use it to project anything onto a board. it also has a neat feature, he took a random buisness card from the audience, placed it on the table in from of the handheld, scanned it with a light scan, then all the info was automatically uploaded onto the device, it also provided all the phone number links on the card, everything was functional within seconds of the scan. he suggested that in 10-20 years, all handhelds would only be unifunctional, and would actually replace all curent devices, and some. phones, mp3, video, palm, even laptops could be a thing of the past once the technology is tested and developed enough. i think the hardware is ready, and the ideas are sound, but society is not ready yet for a device of this ability. also, with quantum computing research going so well at UW (my school) it looks as if mega-super-computers (if i might be so bold) are not that far away. any thoughts on any of this are welcome for discussion. also, about the ipod question, i think someone had it as the question they were going to ask, but they didn't get picked, too bad, maybe msn virtual earth can get us some good pics of bill out for his morning job jamming to the beats of the new nano ipod, only time will tell...
  3. possibly true, i bought an ipod mini bc it was a good deal, and at the time i figured it had all the space i req'd (4G). as for itunes, true, it is a little restrictive, a lot of my friends hate it but need to use it bc they got hooked into buying an ipod. also, i agree, the ipod video seems stupid for watching movies or tv, but look at the success of the psp, and its not much bigger, the only differnece is that you MUST buy those expensive videos for it, where as you could just dl/up the ones for the ipod. possibly something to consider. as for why he's at my school, he's doing a tour of all the technology schools in central/eastern North America, and Waterloo is the only one he's stopping at in Canada, he's also going to MIT, RIT, and 1 of the Ivy leagues. either way, he's just a big name causeing big hype, i don't think people really care what he has to say, just that he's the one saying it.
  4. ahh apple, i love it when they stick it to microsoft, kinda off topic here, but Bill Gates is coming to my school in a bit, its gonna be great, he'll look out into the audience and all he'll see is white ear-bud headphones everywhere, i would estimate nearly 50% of our student body has some sort of ipod.
  5. a moded x-box is all you really need, a buddy of mine took his apart, supercharged the harddrive to some rediculous size, and loaded all these emulators on it, from that console he can play pretty well all the games out there right now. yes it will be interesting to see which next gen player will prevail, x-box 360 or ps3....or maybe nintendo will remain strong due to huge asian markets for it. only time will tell.
  6. ok, the files i downloaded were: .ass, .ogm, .html, and .nfo. the html is like a readme of sorts, and it suggested downloading :Ogg Direct Show Filters, Direct Vobsub, and bsplayer. originally i could play the ogm file in vlc player, but i can't figure out how to see any subtitles. once i downloaded the direct vobsub i could view the subtiltes in that program, but it looked more like an editor than a viewer, it was all in code format. if someone could please help me that would be much appreciated, all i want to do is view the movie with the subtitles. fyi: i am running win XP sp2, and i have quicktime, real, wmp, vlc, and now also the free version of bsplayer. thank you in advance. Edit: thankx for the help Andavari, actually i already had that filter, but it turns out i completly forgot to reinstall my divx codecs after my last format, so now it all works good, thankx again.
  7. i've got a fairly new laptop myself, and the screen is amazing, its the high gloss one, anyway, its kind of bad in the sun, but in a dark room (movies) or just an office or library (for work) its really quite amazing. i've also got the intel M Processor 2 GHz and it does everything i could possibly imagine. as for the wireless, the centrino mobility has been very good, as far as distance and signal strength goes. hope this helps with the decision making.
  8. i've used FlyakiteOSX before and it seems to work fine on my comp now, as for the bar in the screen shot, i still don't understand, is that part of the vista install, or is it something you installed on your own, like RK launcher or another menubar app? let me know, i might have some people here that are interested in the vista dl. as for vista, is it going to becoem the stqandard like xp is now, or whats the deal, also, any eta on the new OS?
  9. it looks a lot like a mac, is that bar at the top part of the install or is that something you've done on your own?
  10. i also concour, i went with a buddy to buy a cartridge, it was gonna be $50 for the cartrige, or $63 for the new printer, and it was loads better, its like any computer related device, give it a few months and its outdated (generally speaking)
  11. shouldn't this discussion really goin the Lounge? well if not and i'm totally off my rocker, then my fav app would have to be Flayakite OSX, the best mac-on-pc emulation i've ever used, with this one installed i've fooled my CS friends and even a newbie mac user.

  13. is CCleaner set up to work with Opera?
  14. thankx guys, but i was looking for a free one since its for a non-profit organization i'd be doing this for and they don't have a budget for this type of thing. a friend of mine just suggested phpBB, has anyone heard anything about this one?
  15. why 24 more mins? y can't you do it now?
  16. I'm starting up a forum on a school club's website and i recall someone saying that the template used here is quite common. could someone please post how to obtain this style and what is needed to set up a forum such as this one. thankx.
  17. i agree, the only good norton product has symantec instead of norton, such as the corp edition.

    vlc

likewise, thats the best part about vlc, you don't need any of the extra crap, its just install and go, no codecs, no fuss.
  19. so basically a virus were he gets an email from you and his drive opens? as for simple, djlizard's works good, and its crazy small.

    start up

oli, I've disabled itunes using msconfig and i've never had any problems with it restarting on its own? Also with itunes 4.9 anyway, i beleive there is a built in option like msn messenger that allows you to set your prefrences at startup.

    start up

Hi Devonia and welcome to CCleaner, as for using it to disable certain programs at Startup, I've never used it for that before, but here is another possible solution to your question: START -> RUN -> msconfig -> ENTER this will bring up the System Configuration Utility window (see screen shot). Select the Statup tab, then just pick which programs you want to startup and which you don't. This is a simple way to do this without messing around with any of the individual programs. After you're done, it will likely ask you to restart; do so. When you log back in, a notification box will appear telling you that you've altered the way windows starts. I think you should pick the option that says you accept the change, or you know about it, or something like that, then it will startup that way from then on. To change any of these settings in the future, just follow the same steps and pick the programs again. ALL THIS IS BASED ON WINDOWS XP, I THINK IT WORKS ON 2000 AS WELL BUT I'M NOT ENTIRLY CERTAIN. post back what OS you're running, or if its XP then just give it a try.

    vlc

Thankx for your help Mike, but i'm fairly sure the video that forum was talking about was likely a corrupted file, since he states that it crashed other media players. My problem has only been with one file, and it works perfectly fine on all the other media players i have. I'll be honest, I havn't really sat down and played with this for any length of time, maybe i'll try the changes the forum and you suggested and go from there. its still the best player i've ever used! thankx again
  23. One has to wonder why another newer version is needed so soon, this seems to be a great concern to many people here, but I can't really understand the need. why upgrade a program if the current version is doing just fine? that being said, its only my opinion, but the current cc is definetly doing a great job. my $0.02 once again I have been thoroughly told.

    vlc

theres a lot of talk about vlc player these days, yet its trully amazing how many casual users have never heard of it. anyway, 1 comment here on the good player... it generally plays any file type, no matter how corupted it is, but i have one file on my computer where i double click it (vlc is my default video player) and the file opens, but there is no display, only audio. I go up to the settings and video is set to "disable". well i change it back to "track 1" and the display still doesn't show up. Furthermore, the file plays normally in WMP-10, so now i'm crazy confused? any suggestions on a possible cause/solution to this occurance. Note: so far this has only happened to one file, i believe it was an .avi file. thankx also, not trying to persuade any one out there not to use it, if you've never used it, GO GET IT RIGHT NOW, BEST VIDEO PLAYER OUT THERE!
  25. ya gmail is trully in a league of its own, as for hotmail, as the flow of emails slows, it will certainly rot...maybe i will demote it back to the address i give people i don't really like. 1 question here, or rather a theory needing validation: whats the best way to import all my contacts from hotmail to gmail. i was thinking, is there a way to do it through msn messenger? the only method i've read about thus far is using outlook express and saving a comma file or some crap like that, but outlook sucks so i'm not going that route. well, hopefully there is some good advice out there.
