  1. Hello You need to describe your problem better. You talk something about "yonks" dont know what it means, then you refer to Windows 98 (I suppose) dont know what that statement would have in relevance of you running it on what I assume is Windows XP, dont know if its on same computer, etc or if it went good on 98 but bad on XP. You dont explain why it wont let you download, if it display any error or if nothing happends when you try to download somehting, if it is a certain file you try to download or if its not possible to download anything. You talk about Regcleaner, and I dont know what it is, I suppose it is a registry cleaner, but you dont provide any link to it. You just state you have it, havent told if you have tried it without positive results, etc you dont mention which disc you got it from. You talk about xp.anti-spy and we dont know what it is, suppose it is some Anti Spyware tool for Windows XP but you didnt supply link or how it would be of any relevance. When you ask a question, you have to explain everything of relevance and if you use some other software you have to explain what it is, where to get it and how it would be of relevance. No idea why that happend or how to fix it.
  2. Microsoft Office and Word sucks. Microsoft refuse to use any open standards and intentionally breaks compatibility to prevent others to read/write documents on other platforms to unfairly gain monopoly. Use Open Office - http://www.openoffice.org/ http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html
  3. You can run CCleaner.exe with the /AUTO parameter to make it autoscan when started. eg. "CCleaner.exe /AUTO" You can add it as a task in "Scheduled Tasks" and run it daily/weekly or at certain intervals.

    Thank you.

I am not sure if you can redistribute it, take a look at the license if there is any such thing in CCleaner. I am not sure if you can distribute it, but I think it should be allowed to distribute it. As far as I know, it is freeware, so even though the term is pretty lousy, I guess it means you are allowed to distribute it (atleast aslong as you dont make any profit). Sucks that CCleaner isnt released under an OSI-compliant open-source license such as the GNU GPL (GNU General Public License) by the FSF (Free Software Foundation). Free software Philosophy http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html The GNU project http://www.gnu.org/ The GNU GPL http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html#GPL GNU GPL FAQ http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html The Free Software Foundation http://www.fsf.org/
  5. With C++ it would also be alot easier to port CCleaner to other OS (operating systems) such as Linux, BSD, MacOS X, Solaris, etc.
  6. Crap Cleaner is coded with Microsoft Visual Basic. Applications coded Visual Basic does run slower than applications coded C++. Also VB (Visual Basic) applications require the VB Run-Time modules. Applications coded in C++ does not. If Crap Cleaner was redesigned in C++ it would run faster. Now some users have trouble running Crap Cleaner because it gives them errors about missing run-time modules, if it was in C++ they wouldnt have this problem. VB besides being crappy and inferior is also platform limited to Windows only. I think it would be alot better if CCleaner was coded in C++ or if the people who make CCleaner would decide to port it (if they have the competence that is).
  7. You could always uninstall it, I guess.
  8. In Mozilla Firefox you can disable loading images (all images or only third-party images such as banners), disable cookies (all or only third-party cookies such as tracking/spy cookies). You can disable Java, JavaScript (all or just certain functions). You can also change "Page Style" from "Basic Style" to "No style" under the "View" menu, that way the content on the page is displayed in a plain and simple style without much design. The browser is also more secure than Microsoft Internet Explorer, and you are less likely to get infected with spyware or virus if you use Mozilla Firefox. You can get it at http://www.getfirefox.org
  9. Well they are pretty advances, they must send requests for information, retrive the reply, parse the reply, render the website. Pay attention to the headers, load all images and content such as applets, scripts, objects, audio/sound, etc. Check if page already exists in temporary internet files, read cookies, etc.
  10. Wiktionary http://www.wiktionary.org/ There is also Wiktionary which is a free dictionary website where you can lookup words to see what they mean. Wikibooks http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Main_Page Is a site where you can read free books in various subjects such as how to build a computer, how to code in C, how to cook, how to use Blender3D, how talk japanese, american history, etc.

    Wikipedia

I would like to tip everyone with this site. http://www.wikipedia.org/ It is a free online encyclopedia in many languages (the english one is the most extensive). It is very great for looking up information about things and it have information on pretty much everything (it's impressive). If you want information on something, instead of google on it for hours then you can just look it up on Wikipedia and it tells you alot of information about it. I showed it to my brother some week ago and we use it alot to look up interesting information such as airplanes such as F15, F22 Raptor, etc. It pretty much contains information about everything. All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation so you can use it freely.
  12. Only new-computers have PCI-E (PCI Express) which is becoming the new standard and taking over AGP and PCI (ISA is already dead long ago). Celeron is a CPU (Central Processing Unit) from Intel that is a low-cost budget processor. Pentium is their good processor. But if you ask me, then AMD makes both faster and cheaper processors than Intel.
  13. USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed USB) is better than USB 1.0 But Ethernet is way faster than both. Firewire is pretty fast too. The best Ethernet is the Gigabit Ethernet at 1000 mbit/s (1 gigabit/s). Next time you buy a NIC (Network Interface Card) besure that it is a gigabit ethernet card. Also if you buy a router/switch then it is best if its a gigabit speed. Ethernet = 10 mbit/s Fast Ethernet = 100 mbit/s Gigabit Ethernet = 1000 mbit/s (1 gbit/s)
  14. It is much better to shutdown the computer because when you restart the computer it cleans the memory and it runs faster. If you have the computer on all the time, then it consumes alot of electicity which is bad for the nature and gets you a higher power bill. It makes the CPU (Central Processing Unit - the processor) and the harddisk and other components hot/warm it also tears the fan and harddisks. If you dont like power down your computer, because you want keep the computer at the state it is, then you can make the computer "hibernate", that way it saves everything it had in memory to the disk before it powers down. The next time you start the computer it will start faster and resume from the state it was, example all your applications will be open, and if you was playing music, then the music will resume at the same part/second of the song it was at. If you anyways choose to have the computer always on, then be sure to use power saving functions and stand by functions to put the computer in "sleep mode" and power down the disk and power off the monitor/screen. Also the more computer is on and connected to the internet, the more time it has to get infected by virus and such, be sure to run anti virus software and anti spyware software and firewall and to keep them up-to-date.
  15. USB mouses are better than PS/2 mouses. Optical mouses are better than ball mouses, they do not require cleaning, and they make a cool light!
  16. Buy one that supports AMD processors and try get a AMD 64, preferably the new dual-core variant. Both MSI and ASUS make great motherboards. What I like with MSI is that it has alot of functions. Try get one that has integrated network card, sound card, and perhaps even graphics card. That way you dont have to waste money buying network card, sound card and graphics card. Dont buy any motherboard with ISA slots. Be sure that the motherboard has PCI-E (PCI Express) slots. You do not need to update the motherboard BIOS unless you have any problem with the computer such as stability issues and crashes. If you would decide to flash the BIOS with an update, be sure to read the information and becareful so not anything goes wrong. Avoid Intel, their processors are more expensive and the company is not so friendly. http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/free-bios.html If the motherboard supports FreeBIOS / LinuxBIOS then that is great!
  17. AntiVir http://www.free-av.com/ A free (as in beer) anti virus scanner. Works on Windows, Linux, BSD, Solaris. Does not contain any big bloated interface with skins. Does not eat up all your processor power or memory. Simple and great. 7-Zip http://www.7-zip.org/ File archiver that supports alot of format such as 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, Z, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB. It is completly free software which is released under the GNU LGPL, its open-source. It has its own .7z format which offers superior compression ratio. ABC (Yet Another Bittorrent Client) http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/ Is a free, open-source Bittorrent client, you can use it to download files from Bittorrent with is. 18. Neither! Avast even though is free, needs a subscription. It contains ugly skin that makes it harder to use and takes up more resources on the computer. Use AntiVir from http://www.free-av.com/ A free (as in beer) anti virus scanner. Works on Windows, Linux, BSD, Solaris. Does not contain any big bloated interface with skins. Does not eat up all your processor power or memory. Simple and great.
  19. Skins are lame, that is a fact. Also what is the reason to use that instead of the normal/standard Internet Explorer. Although, I sould suggest using Mozilla Firefox. http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
  20. You can download free media content such as music, movies, pictures at http://creativecommons.org/ or http://search.yahoo.com/cc if they're under the CC (Creative Commons) license. There are also many clients that connects to P2P (Peer to peer) networks where users share files with each other. Just be sure to avoid Kazaa because it contains spyware. DC++ is a open-source DC (Direct Connect) client. http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/ is really great. ABC is a open-source Bittorrent client. http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/ Shareaza is open-source client that can connect to Gnutella 1 & 2, Edonkey and Bittorrent. http://www.shareaza.com/ You can also try google.
  21. Cant be worth $39, hehe. Better stick with free software.
  22. Norton sucks, they're product cost money, need online-activation to install, eats all your processing power and memory and slows down the computer, etc. If you looking for a antivirus then try AntiVir at http://www.free-av.com/ It is a great, simple, free (as in beer) anti virus software for Windows, Linux, BSD, Solaris. It doesnt need any subscription or license, it doesnt have any bloated interface or skins. it is a simple, easy to use, great anti virus.

  24. Well, his license is probably expired I guess, but if he never used it, then maybe its not expired yet. However, Norton AntiVirus really slows down the system and eats tons of CPU power and memory. Personally, I use AntiVir on 3 of 4 computers at home, it's very simple, it doesnt contain any huge bloated interface with skins and crap. It's just a plain simple good AntiVirus software. It also free (as in beer). http://www.free-av.com/ It exists for Windows, Linux, Open/Free BSD and Solaris. It's only 6,3 megabyte and it works great.
  25. WinRAR isnt free, neither is WinZip. 7-Zip is a great, free, open-source (GNU LGPL) archiver, it is easy to use, it handles most formats such as 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, Z, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB. It offers fast compression/decompression, it also has its own .7z format which offers superior compression ratio. http://www.7-zip.org/
