  1. Be careful with CA AntiSpyware (the old Pest Patrol). There are reports that it can damage SpywareBlaster to the point that it rendered it inoperable. To track the issue see here. JavaCool, the creator of SpywareBlaster, to date hasn't heard anything yet about a possible fix from CA. If you are experiencing problems then the only workaround at the moment is to disable the CA Anti-Spyware component, and reboot. (Note: The newest version of CA Anti-Spyware causes issues with some other programs as well, because it tries to inject its code into other processes to hook various APIs.) If anyone is experiencing a problem please contact CA support and pressure them to develop and release a fix. JavaCool would greatly appreciate it - sometimes having enough customers email over an issue does wonders for getting things done.
  2. RegSeeker is a bit aggressive in its cleaning of the registry and could cause some problems.. Please carefully read the exclude.ini file that comes with RegCleaner (for instance: it advises to run Dial-a-fix to quickly repair permissions) and please use Andavari's RegSeeker customized exclude.ini file here to avoid future problems.
  3. I call myself an agnostic. Which means that I only believe in something when it has been scientifically proven. Science and religion are two completely seperate entities. Science is subject to tests and, while some can be quite dogmatic about it, a theory could change if and when another and more apt theory is accepted. Even Charles Darwin's theory of the descent of man could someday become extinct when somebody postulates a new one. Religion is something that is not subject to tests. You just have to believe it at face value and that's the end of it. If you don't then you're a heretic.

  6. The writer Mark Twain once said: 'There are lies, damn lies, and statistics'. These sort of statistics are just a measurement at a given point in time. To see the trend in browser usage, see here. Then you see that Firefox is edging forward.
  7. Nobody answered the question if it still was a free program... From their website: RegSeeker is FREE for personal use only !
  8. @ hazelnut I couldn't agree more. One choice is always a dictatorship. Multiple choices means freedom of thought. I would kiss you if you were a girl
  9. Myth - "The Windows XP Firewall is not good enough because it lacks outbound filtering." See here for an explanation.
  10. I heard a rumor that it was bought by a Klingon. 'Heghlu'meH QaQ jajvam', they said when leaving the building.

  12. And yes, I'm a bit of a dreamer too. Hollow (from the album Eveningland by Hem) Sometimes when I lay down at night I swear I can see to heaven For it's in dreaming that the things I always knew are the only thoughts I have And when I look up at you, love Handsome as a magazine Wild as the sun, like nothing below could ever pull you down But it's a hard road that we follow The saddest cities, and the darkest hollows People cross this world Over and then back again Never even one time lift their eyes Or think of what they say But I hear it in your voice, love Like someone sweetly willing The hope of all these years, the prayer of a time that we don't even know But it's a hard road that we follow The saddest cities, and the darkest hollows But I hear it in your voice, love The strongest sound I've ever heard Like water from a well so deep in the ground I'll never thirst again But it's a hard road that we follow The saddest cities, and the darkest hollows And everything that's far away And was lost from me I see it all from here in you
  13. And remember to sing: 1. Fifteen men on a dead man's chest Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum Drink and the devil had done for the rest Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike The bosun brained with a marlinspike And cookey's throat was marked belike It had been gripped by fingers ten; And there they lay, all good dead men Like break o'day in a boozing ken Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. 2. Fifteen men of the whole ship's list Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! Dead and be damned and the rest gone whist! Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! The skipper lay with his nob in gore Where the scullion's axe his cheek had shore And the scullion he was stabbed times four And there they lay, and the soggy skies Dripped down in up-staring eyes In murk sunset and foul sunrise Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. 3. Fifteen men of 'em stiff and stark Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! Ten of the crew had the murder mark! Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead Or a yawing hole in a battered head And the scuppers' glut with a rotting red And there they lay, aye, damn my eyes Looking up at paradise All souls bound just contrawise Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. 4. Fifteen men of 'em good and true Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! Ev'ry man jack could ha' sailed with Old Pew, Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! There was chest on chest of Spanish gold With a ton of plate in the middle hold And the cabins riot of stuff untold, And they lay there that took the plum With sightless glare and their lips struck dumb While we shared all by the rule of thumb, Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! 5. More was seen through a sternlight screen Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum Chartings undoubt where a woman had been Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. 'Twas a flimsy shift on a bunker cot With a dirk slit sheer through the bosom spot And the lace stiff dry in a purplish blot Oh was she wench or some shudderin' maid That dared the knife and took the blade By God! she had stuff for a plucky jade Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. 6. Fifteen men on a dead man's chest Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum Drink and the devil had done for the rest Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. We wrapped 'em all in a mains'l tight With twice ten turns of a hawser's bight And we heaved 'em over and out of sight, With a Yo-Heave-Ho! and a fare-you-well And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell, Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!

    CCleaner 2.0

But even MrG can surprise us with a totally new version of CCleaner! Like DjLizard has done yesterday... A huge jump from Dial-a-fix 0.60 to Dial-a-fix 1.0. He put a teaser online to give us an impression of his totally new and recoded Dial-a-fix. See here for much more information.
  16. If you really want to ?destroy' deleted files you can use a program called Restoration. Normally used to recover accidentally deleted files it has also a function (use button top left) to completely delete any trace of files. Restoration is downloadable here
  17. I tried RegScrubVista but it killed my Adobe Flash Player. So, you see, a really good and thorough registry cleaner has its drawbacks. But I wonder what became of the creator...
  18. And most registery fixers will ultimately harm your system. CCleaner is designed to be safe. The choice is always yours: do you want to have a moderately cleaned system with no chance of a total breakdown (choose CCleaner) or do want to have a registry that is as clean as possible but with a greater chance of a total breakdown (choose another program). Remember that a cleaned registry doesn't amount to a lot of clean space and faster reaction times of your computer.
  19. RegScrubXP was replaced by RegScrubVista but then the creator closed his website and went AWOL. Something is seriously wrong. I have both programs and they work flawlessly.

    Defragger

Another option is Defraf 2.20 from J.C. Kessels. Even smaller and faster. See: http://www.kessels.com/defrag/index.html
  21. Prefetch cleaning is already in CCleaner (see in CCleaner - Windows tab - System - last entry) but is a hotly debated issue. See here for more info.
  22. Still, I find it a bit suspicious when something like this happens and someone just happens to shoot some pictures of it.
  23. It's better to educate than to ban. @ neighberaaron: If you're going to use one of our suggestions and dump the hacked program you are better of than you were.
