  1. "Vista also incorporates Windows Defender, an anti-virus program that actively scans computers for "spyware, adware, and other potentially unwanted software." The agreement does not define any of these terms, leaving it to Microsoft to determine what constitutes unwanted software.

Once operational, the agreement warns that Windows Defender will, by default, automatically remove software rated "high" or "severe," even though that may result in other software ceasing to work or mistakenly result in the removal of software that is not unwanted."

Full article here, an interesting read

  2. Usually when you are told by windows that a system file is missing ( in your case the search facility amongst others) the answer is to perform a complete windows file check.

This can be done by doing start > run >and typing in sfc /scannow ( NOTE there is a space between the sfc and / )

Have your windows xp cd handy.

Have you done any virus/malware checks lately?

  3. Now I can install and test any app that doesn't require a reboot of the system and any malware is simply gone at reboot.

I didn't realise that Humpty, that would seem to be one of the main differnces between PowerShadow and First Defence. I can keep any app, reboot or not for as long as I want, which can be handy to see how it performs over a few days against other apps, windows updates etc.

Then I just switch to my other snapshot and wipe out the one I have been testing on.

Also with First Defence, if windows won't boot I can still boot to a First Defence snapshot.

I think it's great you are testing PowerShadow out, that's how things get around!

  4. Just read in another forum about login problems to forums.

One solution which was given and seemed to work for some, was to untick the cookie box for Internet Explorer or Firefox in Spywareblaster>protection> relevent browser tab.

Just in case it works for some who are still having problems.

  5. I would take you up on that Humpty but for the fact that I use First Defence. I feel I have everything I need in that, I also have an archive snapshot for being in serious trouble kept on an external.

Can you boot into PowerShadow if windows won't boot?

I have done a little bit of reading on PowerShadow and it claims it doesn't alter the MBR which is good. I will do a bit more reading on it to keep up with developments, hopefully more translations will come along (although google is good at Chinese!), it's all interesting stuff.

  6. In a way Humpty it seems a bit like a Chinese version of First Defence -ISR which I use and would NOT be without.

I can understand your interest in it.

The concept of First defence was hard to grasp at first, the fact that I can do what I like in a snapshot, test things, mess them up, and then boot to my other snapshot, update the one I played in, and all is as if it never happened.

Are you running Power Shadow2 yourself?

  7. Hello, hazelnut,

    Thanks for your reply.

No, I did not do a backup iof my registry. Why?

When you do an Issues scan in CCleaner you will get a popup asking if you want to save a backup. If you say yes, this is saved by default in "my documents". You just go to the backup, right-click and choose merge, and all should be as it was before the Issues scan.

  8. Just make sure you are not looking in the advanced section of "options."

It is now in the advanced section at the bottom of the windows tab.

As for the prefetch option, it's all to do with personal choice, I have mine ticked with no ill effects. :)
