  1. Interesting that you should mention Firefox extensions - the new update of Nightly Tester Tools (1.1) takes screen shots, it even has an option to submit direct to ImageShack. It was originally an extension to make themes and extensions work with nightly test builds, but many other features have been added that even those not running nightlies might find useful. Check it out: http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/web/f...htly/index.html
  2. Personally, I always keep the latest version of DAF on hand. Windoze is prone to so many problems, it seems like a good precaution.
  3. If you choose normal deletion, nothing happens to the files. They just lose their identity, so Windows sees them as free space. They could be recovered with a file undelete utility, so if there's anything you've deleted that way that you're really concerned about, a free space "wipe" would be in order. That would overwrite all the free space on the drive, a long slow process. How paranoid are you? It would be much more efficient to use the secure deletion option in the first place, on sensitive files. Then you'd just be overwriting the specific files in question instead of all your free space, which could be a lot if you have a large HDD.
  4. I suggest adding FileKey4=%ProgramFiles%\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\reports|*.txt to "Custom Files and Folders" so you can clean it selectively.
  5. They're not going to add an antivirus to it, since it was just bought by Grisoft, makers of AVG. From the Grisoft website you can get both of them bundled together for enterprise customers for 45 bucks.
  6. In the default bookmarks that come with Firefox, in the "Firefox and Mozilla Links" folder, there's one called "Extensions and Themes". This takes you to the official Mozilla Addons site, which is the safest place to get them. It's best to get the hang of Firefox without adding extensions or themes first. Search the forums on Mozillazine (there's a link to it in the same bookmark folder) for information on extensions you might be interested in. Install extensions or themes one at a time, and use each one for a while to make sure there are no problems before installing another. Also, avoid installing different extensions with overlapping functions; if you have two extensions that are both trying to modify the same function, it can create a conflict that causes big problems.
  7. Not entirely. In CCleaner Options -> Cookies, you can set cookies to be saved. Just move from the "Cookies to Delete" column to the "Cookies to Save" column by highlighting -> clicking the arrow.
  8. If you have Defender set to run daily scans, those log files could really build up after a while. My own approach is to have Defender cleaning unchecked when I'm doing daily cleaning, just clean it once in a while after looking in Defender to make sure there's nothing there I need to save.
  9. Might be related to this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Toolbar_customiz...eset_on_startup I know it's not the same symptom, but this same problem can cause a variety of symptoms.
  10. Plus, you can choose to not install the toolbar, even if you downloaded the version that has it included.
  11. Nope, not off a flash drive either. But there is a Slim version, only 1.28 MB installed. You'll find it at the bottom of this page: http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
  12. Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt will get you there.
  13. I hadn't gotten around to posting that here, and since you posted a link to that post it would be redundant. This is why you should only download Firefox directly from Mozilla.
  14. For a backup scanner, there's also Bitdefender 8 Free Edition, which comes without the resident protection. It's a little resource-hungry, but if you've got enough RAM it's pretty good: http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--...ee-Edition.html
  15. I use AVG, quite happy with it. A-squared is not an antivirus, it's an anti-malware scanner (the free version is the scanner only), intended to be used alongside AV programs to catch types of malware they miss. I used to have it, but switched to ewido -I think it's better, but it's only for Win2k and XP. If you have Win 95, 98 or ME, use a-squared. Either is a good addition to your security array.
  16. Also, if you try to clean too soon after closing Firefox this will happen. If that's the case, you just need to wait 30 seconds or so when that message comes up before you click ok. However, Firefox not closing completely is a well-known problem. Java is one cause, always make sure Java is shut down before you close Firefox - exit any Java page first. Problems with Firefox extensions can be to blame, too.
  17. It's just deleting entries of that extension that are no longer in use, it doesn't affect the ability of your OS to handle those extensions.
  18. You're welcome - that's the old paranoid spirit! You can't have too many backups...unless you run out of HDD space...
  19. I've never needed to restore any of the backups I've made of registry entries CCleaner removed, so I really do think it's quite safe. With CCleaner backups and System Restore you're doubly covered in case of problems - unless something removed from the Registry cripples your OS so badly that it won't even boot up. That's why I suggested ERUNT, with it you'd have all eventualities covered - not that I think you need it. I have it - and I've never used those backups either. But I'm a paranoid...
  20. You didn't say what OS you have, but if it's Windows NT/2000/2003/XP, running NT File System, you could back up your registry with ERUNT. Then you wouldn't need to worry anymore, by default it makes backups that can be accessed from the Recovery Console. Tha means you can restore the registry even if Windows won't boot anymore. Download: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ All that stuff that came up is almost certainly safe to delete - but I can understand your hesitancy.
  21. A 1.5.0.3 update was already in the works when this security hole came to light. They decided to release a mini-update to patch it, this became 1.5.0.3 instead. The update they were working on was rebadged 1.5.0.4 - and it hasn't been released yet. Softpedia must be providing nightly development builds, without explaining that's what they are.
  22. Can't see your screen shot, not a clickable link. Could you describe the error?
  23. I previously reported on this forum that the upcoming Firefox 2 was going to include the Places system, which stores bookmarks and history in a combined sqlite database. Well, it's now been decided that Places isn't going to be ready soon enough. Places development will continue on the Trunk nightly builds, toward release in a future version (maybe Firefox 3?). Anyway, Mr.G will have a lot more time to work on supporting it.
  24. They say they'll continue to offer the free edition separately. I hope they stick to that.
  25. Analyze isn't that helpful anyway, what it lists doesn't accurately predict what cleaning will remove. I never use it.
