  1. Just installed Zone Alarm, had a bit of a look around' you know, read the help files and stuff

Apparently after it installs it is setup ready to go.

Expected some early warnings etc, but when I tried to connect to the INTERNET I received a message saying (limited or no connection)

I have a (ADSL Broadband) type of connection and a shortcut to my Network Adapter "local area connection" so I can disconnect and connect as I please.

I had to turn off Zone Alarm and let windows firewall switch back on so I could get back on the net.

The only warnings I got from ZA where about Windows media player, and Norton AV updater.

I stopped Windows media player, and allowed Norton AV updater.

    Any helpful advice please

  2. craigathus - run the scan again please and take a screen shot and post it......try to get everything...if you have to do it in to...that fine... I want to see exactly what the Crucial scan showed you.

I'll try to help you out once you post back.

    Thanks

    AJ

    Hi  GNCbball8

I didn't actually run the scan, I just took note of what was on the page after running (Crucial Memory Advisor Tool).

Call me green or a "newbie" when I clicked to run the scan it wanted to download some sort of "activex" files or something along those lines and I just wasn't sure. to late and to tired at the time.

A friend at work says that adding extra ram in my machine "already has 1GB" probably wouldn't have as great an affect on performance as a better video card.

I might put future hardware upgrades on hold for the time being.

Thanks for replying to my post.

  3. Go to http://www.crucial.com and look on there, if the website doesn't have enough info you can even talk to a rep on the phone to get the correct memory.

Thanks Andavari' I'll use the supplied link and go and have a look.

Even talk to a rep?

Is the site in the states? if so that could prove very costly for me in Australia

    Appreciate the help. ;)

    From http://www.crucial.com (results)

Mother board specs...not all just the main ones.

    DDR2 SDRAM Frequencies: PC2-3200 and PC2-4200.

Supported DRAM Types: DDR SDRAM only.

    240-pin DDR2 DIMM Banking: 2(2banks of 1).

Q: What memory goes into my computer, and will a faster speed be backwards-compatible?

A: DDR2 memory with support for PC2-4200 and PC2-5300 speeds.

Is this the answer I need? and in layman's terms what does this mean?

Do I go for 2x 1024Mb of DDR2 with the highest speed?

This might sound like a dumb question' but I'll ask any way.

Whats the difference between (DDR & DDR2)? .

Appreciate any help and look ford to a reply.

  4. I just bought this for my Dell - TigerDirect - Crucial Ballistix 2 GB set. I checked my internals with the scanner at Crucial.com. I only have 512 MB of PC2-3200 right now...aka slow ass start up in Windows XP Home...this should help considerably.

Hi GCNbball8 could you or Humpty please tell me if I could easily ;) (with no drama) :(

    replace my 2x "512Mb DDR" ram modules with say? 2x "1024Mb DDR2"?

This PC is about 1 year old (Pentium D 2.7GHz, XPhome sp2) P4 Titan series Motherboard (GA-8VM800PMD-775) (VIAP4M800 Pro chipset) any helpful advice is always appreciated.

  5. I think this is the third time that they have 'skipped' versions to get back into sync with Firefox, Anthony. I remember them doing that at least a couple of times before. The problem is that there are more updates for Firefox than Thunderbird. Every now and then, Mozilla gets a little 'anal' and wants them to be the same. Then Firefox will have to bump another version while Thunderbird doesn't need one ... and so the cycle begins once again.

I think they should just let the versions go where they go. It gets very confusing to the average user. Most think: "Wow, did I miss all of those updates? What happened to the updater in T-bird?"

What if you did miss an update' wouldn't the last "latest" update cover all previous updates?

  6. Good old spell check ;)"ieSpell"

Got to have it' got it' works great with IE7 (Internet Explorer 7) even got it on my command bar ;)

If I try to run spell check within (Piriform Forums...posting new topic) it doesn't launch, I get a "Windows Internet Explorer" message saying "ieSpell not detected. Click Ok to go to download page" But I do have it!

I'm using it now' only if I launch it from the command bar

Any one no how to tell IE7 to have a good long look at it self  ?

Any one els had the same problem? :(

    Update :P

I let it install again! "ieSpell" from the link that comes up after clicking ABC.

IE7 asks if I want to install, because it realizes that it has been installed already. ;)

  7. Hi guy's

About half an hour ago windows automatic update was doing its thing, and among the updates came a program called Windows cardspace.

I let everything install and found this new program listed in control panel.

I've had a bit of a look  at it' and read the help file, and was wondering If any one out there has used it or can tell me a bit more about it.

It doesn't seem to start at system start up' but I have noticed that it keeps running in the background if you launch it and then exit it.

  8. The Microsoft Visual Basic Runtime Files are required to run a myriad of programs, not just CCleaner. So if CCleaner or some other program is constantly requesting them you'd indeed have to install them. I recommend restarting Windows after the installation, even if you're not prompted to do so.

They can be downloaded from Microsoft here.

    Thanks 'Andavari'

No program is requesting any VBRuntime files, Its just that Windows is rejecting this update, I can't install it.

Its supposed to be a so called "Critcal Update" <_< ...automatic updates enabled etc.

My PC runs fine without all this VBR stuff.

It just seems strange that "Microsoft Update" after checking my PC thinks I need this update.

    Thanks for replying.

    Sorry my mistake :(

Need to say sorry "Andavari" for wastin your time, and anyone els. :(

    How stupid do I feel!

I got "Microsoft Visual Basic Runtime" & "Microsoft Virtual Machine" mixed up.

It's (Microsoft VM update:816093) that came as a automatic update, however as I said my PC' or Windows won't let this automatic update install!

Do I need this update? or can I relax? ;)

    Like I said' sorry...

  9. Mobo = Motherboard.

You could go to Crucial.com and use the "Scan My System" button on the main page. (Only works with Internet Explorer or with the IE Tab extension in Firefox.) Click to agree to the Terms and Conditions and let it run. The page it comes up with RAM options... but on the left side of the screen, it has a bunch of text boxes; check the one that says video card, and un-check the others. Then, click on the ones that it shows, and it will tell you if it's AGP or PCI.

    AJ

Thanks 'GCNbball8' I should have figured out (Mobo) thats 1 to remember.

    I'll give what u say a try. :D

  10. Might be best if you can find a pic of your mobo and work from there.

What's a mobo? I'm sure its short for somthin' probably realy obvious?

    Sorry about the spelling!

I'm mainly trying to work out what I need in the way of a new & better (more powerfull video card)

  11. Hi craigathus, welcome. :)

You could try System Information for Windows (SIW) under Hardware - Devices - Display Adapters.

    SIW link

If still not sure you could open the box and images of the different slots are available on the net.

    Thanks Humpty

Device manager only tells me that its connected to PCI bus 1' does that mean its a PCI type of card?

  12. HI' :D

Can some 1 please tell me if I really need Microsoft VBR files?

I use windows XP home sp2 and Microsoft Update keeps telling me I need to install an update for VBRuntime.

The problem is windows won't let it install! I can't find any VBRuntime files or programs on my PC.

After searching there knowledge base I found out the reason is that VBRuntime might not be installed on this PC.

They also say that XP normally does have it installed!

I read in CCleaners help that CCleaner needs VBRuntime? however CCleaner installed and is running like a swiss watch.

Very confusion  would appreciate any help.

  13. HI' been checking out these forums since downloading CCleaner the other day, It's go to be 1 of the best downloads around.

It works just like a bought 1 lol

Was reading posts about what AVprograms & Firewalls you guys use and recommend or don't! very interesting.

Don't laugh but I use Norton AV2007, not as resorce hungery as Norton Internet Security, and it seems to do the job.

I let Windows Firewall do its thing' got to make sure that only the needed exceptions are allowed! and keep up to date with updates for everything.

This is my 1st post...please excus mi speling...got to download spell ckeck for IExplorer.

Can any 1 tell me how to workout if I have a AGP or PCI type of video card? It's a Nvidia FX5200 128Mb. It came preinstalled in this PC.

Do I have to open the box to have a look?

    cya's
