  1. fragghead, Windows SP3 has been available for almost a year and has several Critical Security Updates so it should be installed to protect the system and your information.

Also you should enable Automatic Updates or at least be notified that Updates are available.

Go to Control Panel then Automatic Updates then select Automatic (recommended) or at least Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.

Go to Secunia Online Software Inspector then run it to see what other applications are vulnerable:

The avast! anti virus can be renewed for up to 14 months but you have to request a license key:

    The forum is very good:

There is an issue with activating Home right now but I am sure that it will be resolved quickly:

By the way, I am a happy avast! anti virus user and I even purchased a Professional upgrade because I like it.

  3. With all the horror stories I have been reading about the SP3 update i am not ready to update even my PC to it.

I guess you haven't heard what havoc the latest Conflicker or Virut mutated trojans can inflict without SP3?

The only easy sure way to remove them is a compete FORMAT of the hard drive and install the operating system while disconnected from the Internet to prevent re-infection.

I use Defraggler to defrag individual files only on my Vista Home Premium system and it works well at that.

I find that Vista does a good job of defragging but I have made sure that the system is powered on when the schedule needs to be run.

15GB of free space is pretty low on any hard drive.
That is quite true and quite possibly the cause of the slowdown.

I saw a message board around 2000 where everyone had 800x800-sized .bmp sigs. It was atrocious. Their typical posts were usually " " or "lol". Talk about a waste of real estate and bandwidth.
    Didn't they call that AOL?
  6. Browser Battle: Nine Browsers of Today and Tomorrow Compared

Anyone who may have thought the death of Netscape would signal the end of the browser wars, boy were they mistaken. In fact, it could be argued that it was at that point it all began. It didn't take long for Mozilla's Firefox to emerge from Netscape Navigator's ashes, and over time, Firefox would win over enthusiasts with a potent combination of speed, security, and an unprecedented level of customization.

  7. This is so nice Hazel. :) Especially on a Spring-like day we have here today. There were tons of birds chirping outside early this morning.

We have a long way to go before we hear those welcome sounds although it is a balmy 12C outside now and most of the snow has been washed away by all the rain we had but we do have a few hardy Starlings about.

Helix Nebula poses for ESO 'scope

The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere, aka (mercifully) ESO, has released an impressive image of the Helix Nebula captured by La Silla Observatory in Chile.

The nebula, lying at around 700 light-years away in the constellation of Aquarius, has quickly been dubbed the "Eye of God", for obvious reasons:

  11. When I used to install High Speed connection for a cable supplier here I had the chance to install it in a home of young people that looked like the person in the picture and when I was about to test the connection one of them said I know what I'm doing and had some of the most vile pr0n on the screen in seconds that I have ever witnessed.

I looked around for the parents and asked where they were and they said At Work with a most disgusting look on their faces.

I just picked up my toolkit and my jaw from the floor and left.
