  1. There's a bit more to that story

BBC team buys a botnet, DDoSes security company Prevx

Posted by Dancho Danchev @ 6:46 am

Update: BBC Click?s tweet states that they took legal advice following comments on the potential violation of U.K?s Computer Misuse Act.

There?s a slight chance that you may have unknowingly participated in a recent experiment conducted by the BBC.

In a bit of an awkward and highly unnecessary move, a team at the BBC?s technology program Click has purchased a botnet consisting of 22,000 malware infected PCs, self-spammed themselves on a Gmail account, and later on DDoS-ed a a backup site owned by security company Prevx (with prior agreement), all for the sake of proving that botnets in general do what they?re supposed to - facilitate cybercrime.

  2. I would like a feature (built into the "Include" sub-section of Options) that would let me delete a selected Registry key or Registry Folder. This would be useful for removing traces of of USB devices that you have connected to your system (as one example). I would simply be able to tell it to delete the folder that shows what devices have been attached to my system if I wanted to.

    I use USBDeview

USBDeview is a small utility that lists all USB devices that currently connected to your computer, as well as all USB devices that you previously used.

For each USB device, exteneded information is displayed: Device name/description, device type, serial number (for mass storage devices), the date/time that device was added, VendorID, ProductID, and more...

USBDeview also allows you to uninstall USB devices that you previously used, and disconnect USB devices that are currently connected to your computer.

You can also use USBDeview on a remote computer, as long as you login to that computer with admin user.

  3. I used this a couple of years ago but once Ashampoo came along I dropped it.

Not saying it doesn't suit some folk, just I prefer the Ashampoo ease of use.

I tried Ashampoo but did not like it.

Its all up to familiarity I guess.

  4. "Pshaw" is an antiquated phrase for saying "oh comon' now" or "I don't believe it". Last time I read it in printed form it must've been in the 70s or 80s.

Pft is short for PIFT. :)

    I'm still confused

    PIFT 0.07 sec.

    Acronym Definition

    PIFT platelet immunofluorescence test

    PIFT Protocol Interbank File Transfer

    http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/PIFT

Now if you said piffle that would make sense

    pif?fle (pfl)

    intr.v. pif?fled, pif?fling, pif?fles

To talk or act feebly or futilely.

    n.

Foolish or futile talk or ideas; nonsense.

Once the cornerstone of a booming local tech economy, AOL yesterday executed its second major round of layoffs in two years amid a weakening online advertising market. The company is shedding 10 percent of its workforce by the end of this month

Almost as good as an Investment counselor for a large American financial consultant looking for a job.

  7. Security bulletin for Adobe 9.1

Looks like it's a needed update. The only reason I care about Adobe is because we use Reader/Acrobat here at work so I have to support it for my clients and flash player because it's used across most of the web. Other than that, I use Foxit at home :|

I hope you have them use Secunia Online Software Inspector to scan their PC for the most common programs and vulnerabilities:

  8. Donate it to a local retirement home with an offer to pop along once a week to give a couple of lessons

I used to volunteer at a local seniors community center and they had more modern systems than what I'm trying to sell. :(

It seemed that the only thing they were used for was to play Solitaire.

I may offer it here for people to use as a free Internet access system to check their Hotmail and stuff if I get no offers.

Yesterday I finished doing my 2008 Income Tax and I may get a bit of a rebate which makes me happy but it is so complicated but have the time and patience and I refuse to pay $50.00 to have it done.

  9. Malware authors jump on the PIFTS.EXE bandwagon

It looks like the bad guys are proving that once again they aren't slow to leap on an opportunity.

With parts of the internet flustering over the Symantec / PIFTS.EXE debacle, hackers have set out to poison search engines in an attempt to cash in on unsuspecting computer users.

We're seeing evidence that websites containing malware are showing up in search engine results when people hunt for more information about PIFTS.
