  1. RUN- is created by MSCONFIG when you uncheck items from the Startup tab and press OK. Zero Knowledge is often installed on HP, Compaq, etc machines by default.
  2. Especially when nobody gets infected by viruses anymore; it's all about spyware (which antivirus apps do nothing for).
  3. The problem is that CCleaner doesn't recognize Unicode (grrrr), and those keys contain Unicode characters. You need to open regedit.exe yourself, find them, and delete them. edit: so the first feature request should be: add Unicode support to both the file scanner/deleter and the registry scanner/deleter! Link to unicows.dll if necessary and use all *W() API functions!
  4. You shouldn't name the downloaded installer "ccleaner.exe". Name it something else or leave the filename alone when you save it. (Hint: The installer is not written in VB, so installing VB run-times does nothing for it closing during installation.)
  5. If this is Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you might also want to run Dial-a-fix's Repair permissions tool just in case. http://DjLizard.net/software/Dial-a-fix-medium.exe Run Dial-a-fix.exe after extracting that, click Tools, then double click on Repair permissions. If it's WinMe or Win98, ignore this post.
  6. I use CCleaner on WinMe weekly and haven't had this issue before.
  7. They're support files that should not normally be removed, but are listed in the registry. Add/Remove programs automatically hides programs like those.
  8. Rich22: What problem was it? CCleaner's issues scan should not actually cause problems. Also, if removing an ActiveX/Class issue causes a problem, does merging the registry backup fix it? With this information we could work toward fixing the problem you had.
  9. Access violation. First: update your Visual Basic run-time. Download it here. Then restart the computer, uninstall, and reinstall CCleaner. Failing that, try: Start > Run > regsvr32 %programfiles%\CCleaner\CCHelper.ocx Do that again with the rest of these file names, replacing "CCHelper.ocx" with these: CCListBar.ocx CCListView.ocx CCTab.ocx CCTreeView.ocx CCSubTimer.dll CCSystem.dll
  10. CCleaner needs to support UNICODE or this issue will just keep appearing more and more.
  11. Start > Run > chkdsk C: /R /F Answer Y when prompted to schedule the chkdsk on the next restart. Then restart your computer. The chkdsk can take up to several hours. Once back up and running, open your current CCleaner version and clean out all of the temp files, etc. Then re-download the new version of CCleaner and try to reinstall it.
  12. Since I just upgraded to v1.29.295, and I hadn't cleaned my dev box in a while, I ran it without analyzing. It spent a long time chugging away, displayed a log that said it had deleted about 23 MB, and then DrWatson started yelling at me (wanted me to send an error report, yippee). Because dwwin generally deletes the crash dump after Error Reporting runs (and because I've never debugged a specific program before (just STOP crash dumps)), I decided to kill dwwin.exe so I could grab the .dmp for MrG. I ran it through WinDbg and ran the .ecxr and !analyze -v commands already. MrG, if you would like the .dmp file or have additional commands you'd like me to run on it, let me know. Below is the WinDbg log I've gleaned thus far (not for faint of heart): Specifically interesting to note are the two exception parameters: "deadcafe" Oh, and I ran CCleaner again afterwards and it had apparently stopped before the other 18.7MB were deleted. It didn't crash this time. --- (f0f0f0f0.454): Unknown exception - code c000008f (first/second chance not available) eax=01150000 ebx=0012d840 ecx=00001000 edx=7c90eb94 esi=00000000 edi=7ffdf000 eip=7c90eb94 esp=0012d818 ebp=0012d8b4 iopl=0 nv up ei pl zr na po nc cs=001b ss=0023 ds=0023 es=0023 fs=003b gs=0000 efl=00000246 ntdll!KiFastSystemCallRet: 7c90eb94 c3 ret 0:000> .ecxr eax=0012f954 ebx=0015d2b0 ecx=00000000 edx=7ffb001c esi=0012f9c4 edi=0015d2b0 eip=7c81eb33 esp=0012f950 ebp=0012f9a4 iopl=0 nv up ei pl nz na pe nc cs=001b ss=0023 ds=0023 es=0023 fs=003b gs=0000 efl=00000202 kernel32!RaiseException+0x53: 7c81eb33 5e pop esi 0:000> !analyze -v ******************************************************************************* * * * Exception Analysis * * * ******************************************************************************* *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for ccleaner.exe FAULTING_IP: kernel32!RaiseException+53 7c81eb33 5e pop esi EXCEPTION_RECORD: 0012f668 -- (.exr 12f668) ExceptionAddress: 7c81eb33 (kernel32!RaiseException+0x00000053) ExceptionCode: c000008f ExceptionFlags: 00000001 NumberParameters: 2 Parameter[0]: deadcafe Parameter[1]: deadcafe BUGCHECK_STR: c000008f DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: APPLICATION_FAULT PROCESS_NAME: ccleaner.exe ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc000008f - {EXCEPTION} Floating-point inexact result. 13. I hope they fix all the retarded regressions that 1.5.0.2 introduced (such as the caret focus issues and type-as-you-find bugs).
  14. The only difference between digital and analog is a lack of signal interference (interference isn't possible with digital) and extended plug and play capabilities. That's about it. Since you don't have any interference/noise going on, it doesn't matter. Yes, it would have to be exactly like that.
  15. The phrase "Most Dells" is a bit much. Most Dells actually do have an AGP/PCI-E slot in them. Certain models don't. Turning analog into digital isn't going to happen. Most DVI connectors are DVI-I anyway, which can do both analog and digital. The adapter uses the analog section of the DVI-I cable and adapts it to the standard SVGA connector most people are used to seeing. DVI-D can't be connected with an adapter at all. http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html
  16. Yes. This only affects NTFS' internal compression capability. This unsets the compression flag on the file.
  17. What do you mean by that?
  18. How to remove all compression attributes: Start > Run > cmd.exe Once in cmd.exe, type: compact /u /s:X:\ /i /f /a /q > C:\compression.log Where X: is the drive letter you wish to uncompress. It will not say anything or return you to a C:\ prompt until it is complete. You will also be able to look at C:\compression.log to see what was processed.
  19. ProcessIdleTasks is correct. Anyway, I have a high traffic hard drive at home (creates and deletes about 5-20 GB a day) and I haven't defragmented in a long time. I doubt that it would change anything (performance wise) if I did, anyway. I have noticed remarkable slowdown when I've got less than 5 GB free space on that drive (120GB max) and it gets worse with less free space.
  20. That looks pretty screwed up. You'll have to open regedit yourself (Start > Run > regedit.exe) and surf your way to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Microsoft, Windows NT, Currentversion (etc etc) and delete them yourself. It's also important to note that CCleaner does not support UNICODE (which sucks, a lot).
  21. Multiple instances of svchost is correct. Even if you have 30+ processes listed, it's not really a big deal.
  22. Someone brought it to my attention that after one or two nights of scheduled defragmentation, subsequent defrags take only moments to complete. It's still quite a big waste of time, since using your computer for two years and then defragmenting it still doesn't really show any visible performance increase that I've ever witnessed.
