  1. I wouldn't necessarily call it better, however it is feature-rich and does a very good job and seems to be just as fast. They can both be used via a command line and scheduled in Task Scheduler. The appealing aspect of JkDefrag is when using it's parameters as detailed on its website, which allows you to define how you want a defrag task to take place. Plus it's continually updated; and how old is the XP defrag now?

    So, how is it better?

  2. I love office 07. Other then that, tuneup utilities is awesome. I also pay for winrar, cause i like it over the freeware products. I like diskkeeper as well. And i periodically will install trials of other software to give em a try but for the most part i like freeware like CCleaner, avast, emule, superantispyware, paint.net, etc. these pretty much meet my needs.

    Is Diskeeper worth it?

  3. The last time I installed DVDFab HD Decrypter all it could do was crash, so I went right back to DVD Decrypter and luckily it worked.

Same with me. I use DVD Shrink primarily, and if that doesn't work, DVD Shrink. So far, no problems.

  5. What snags did you have with ubuntu?

A few. I had to make my laptop boot from the cd drive in order to access it, which has now made my cd drive a ct a bit odd on occasions, which isn't great. The try-out version (as in before you install), couldn't display the internet. I was willign to wokr around all of this, but when it came to installing, I couldn't find an option to install on to my read-made partition for it, and when I went to manual, it kep giving me an error message for when I tried to select a drive or something. Overall, I didn't have a lot of trust in it, unfortunately.

Still, if I was to buy a new laptop, I would go for it pre-installed, or insdtall it myself if I wasn't worried about possibly overwriting Windows.

  6. A-Patch doesnt do that .. its a new feature of WLM and Yahoo .. (some kinda friendship) .. A Very good Alternative to A-Patch is Mess Patch - www.Mess.be.

I know that, I meant just using WLM.

Who knows. Seemingly every suggestion gets shot down, so he's on his own to do his own leg work for searching for alternatives.

I'd rather use an open-source alternative if its as good as the propierty software, but in this case, with Unlocker, I can't.

The difference between free/open source doesn't matter to me. I just want functional software. If someone is really "only wanting open source" then they need to stop using windows and when they move to linux they need to not use any proprietary drivers, codecs, ect. What will happen when you do that? You will get a nonfunctional computer thats what.

Ubuntu has a version for those who want to try it(ubuntu includes all kinds of proprietary stuff in the default build):

    http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/gobuntu

As far as open source windows software goes this link is about the best you will probably get:

    http://osswin.sourceforge.net/

For me, it is a big difference. However, you are right, Ubuntu in itself isn't truly FLOSS. Only Gobuntu is, which really isn't functional. I tried Ubuntu, hit upon some snags, so back Vista. I'm just gonna use Vista, but try and use as much open-source software as I can. However, of course, if there is better freeware (I don't want to use pay for software apart from Windows itself), I will generally use it.

  7. I'm not saying dont try it/dont make your own opinion or whatever but you said that it was "better made" and I'm just saying that at the moment thats not the case in my opinion(and a lot of others). There just seems to be a very vocal minority on the net spouting about how great linux is everywhere and its getting kinda old(especially since most of them probably use windows anyway.).

Maybe. As I said, I'll try it. If I can get it work though, and I feel I can survive with just it, then I will probably uninstall Windows. Probably.

  8. Thats the problem... its just what people say. Dont get me wrong, I love free things and will always try free things before I buy anything BUT... I will also not tolerate things not working just because they are free if I can avoid it. All you see on "tech sites" is how fabulous linux is and I have tried it (and know other computer literate people who have tried it) and it wasn't the honeymoon people make it out to be. I lost support for most of my hardware and peripherals. I noticed the software wasnt as great as people were saying. Sure firefox, openoffice, all the ones I had used on windows were fine but where is my good media player(Winamp, WMP11, Foobar>amarok), burning program(k3b is not as great as its made out to be), and various other programs.

The funny thing is that most of the good linux programs are on windows anyway. The week I used ubuntu I was using most of the same programs I did on windows I just had a crappy media player(amarok) and hardware issues. I dont want to rag on linux but I personally think its just a bunch of hype at the moment that it doesn't live up to.

I dont do anything major on my computers(music, internet, work, ect) but I found that I was either using the same programs on both oses or had better options on windows. Plus now that I have office 07 I dont ever want to do without it. Oh and on top of the software thing I couldn't use my mp3 player, all in one printer, ect. :P

    -----

    Back on topic:

I use office 07, nero 7 which came with a dvd burner I just replaced, and thats about it. I stand by the notion that you can install windows and get a fully stocked pc for free. :D

To each there own. Still gonna wait and see.

  9. Have you actually used ubuntu or any other linux distro yet? I have for the last year tried linux distros every chance I got and here are commen issues(hardware):

Wireless on linux is still pretty bad. I have a "supported" wireless card yet I get crappy wifi reception, linux doesn't support WPA wireless encryption very well, and the connection would often drop. The card is made by atheros and I've tried it on ubuntu(all flavors), suse, and a couple of slackware based distros like vector and slax.

I also got very bad audio support. I littlerally spent 6 hours getting my audio to work because I had to piece together various tutuorials to get any sound at all. When I did get it to work it sounded noticably worse than on windows. I have an intel sound card since its internal in my laptop.

Graphics card drivers were crap and did a terrible job. I have an ati card in this laptop and I couldn't play the same games I could on windows. I tried cube I think because it was available on linux and windows and I wanted to compare.

Then you get into power management. For whatever reason I got about/barely an hour of battery life on linux where I get almost 2 on windows. I think its because linux doesn't automatically scale back things for power saving like windows will.

Then there is other hardware like mp3 players(didnt support them), printers(only could print, not scan), ect. Oh and dont think its easy to install drivers on linux. Nope bet used to the command line and following tutorials by people who do not go step by step. They just assume you know what they are talking about.

On top of all of this you would get other bugs like things randomly not showing in gnome panels after reboot(the equivelent of the start bar) and the fact that I couldn't close my laptop lid to go into hybernation. It just went to a black screen and when I opened the lid it crashed.

I have more complaints but you will see for yourself.

I've tried it around other peoples, but not on my laptop, no. I will wait and see what happens. If it works, it will further my beliefs. if it doesn't, then yes, I will change. But from what most people say, it sounds great.

  10. Microsoft Windows, because without it we wouldn't even be discussing about software made for Windows.

Good point, though personally I think Ubuntu is better made, and am going to be using it as soon as my CD arrives. I have already made a partition for it, just gotta wait and see. Then I think it'll bea case of trying to sue Ubuntu as much as possible, and using Windows only when needed.

Also, even though its pay for, I would never buy it, this came free with the laptop, if it didn't, I would only use Linux.

  11. I have personally found freeware, or FLOSS software for nearly all my old paid for stuff. The only thing that I still have on here is MS Office 2007 Enterprise. I know OpenOffice exists, and I like it, but it really doesn't match it for me, though eventually, it will.

  12. I've given my opinions of Defraggler, in a thread, though it appears no one was interested... Recuva is great as the re-written CCleaner.

Still, wish it was all open-source.

  13. CCleaner alternative: Disk Cleaner (http://www.diskcleaner.nl/) It hasn't been updated in a while, but it is a nice supplement to CCleaner. It is also lightning fast and pretty comprehensive. Free and open source.

Hijackthis alternative: Runscanner (http://www.runscanner.net/) Pretty much hijackthis+autoruns. Free and closed source.

Antimalware: Winpooch (outdated, but still light and fast HIPS) http://www.winpooch.com/ Free and open source. Can integrate ClamAV.

    Maybe try AbiWord? (http://www.abisource.com)

Also, I love this app: Launchy (http://www.launchy.net/)

And of course, there is The GIMP (http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/)

    Another: check this out: http://www.getmiro.com/

I have used Disk Cleaner, it doesn't work correctly with Vista.

Runscanner is closed source, so its no different to HijackThis.

I really don't want to use out-of-date antimalware.

Thanks for the link to Abiword, will look into it in the future if dissatisfied with OpenOffice's Writer.

GIMP is cool, but too complicate for the likes of me, which is why I stick to Paint.NET.

I use ffdshow and Haalis media splitter for direct show filters. Codec packs are asking for trouble IMHO. I dont use anything but WMP11 for my direct show player and Ive tried alot of them - basically WMP11 is the most robust one of them all.

Ive been using Imgburn but Ill check out Infrarecorder.

InfraRecorder is great. Codec Packs not to worries about, though thanks.

http://sourceforge.net has some antivirus, ClamWin/ClamAV being the best but it doesn't have a resident shield yet. There's another antivirus on there too called Moon Secure Antivirus with a resident shield I think, it uses part of ClamAV if I'm remembering correctly but I can't even test it because all it does is crash when trying to run it.

There's several firewalls on there too, but you have to compile them - don't ask me how to compile them because I have no ideal how to accomplish that.

Visit Open Source Alternative (also linked in my signature), which will greatly reduce the leg work of finding all this stuff on your own.

I don't wanna use ClamWin cos i need a resident scanner. I'll wait till Moon Secure is up-to-date. Yes, the firewall thing sounds too complicated. Thanks for the link.

Again try http://sourceforge.net, there's typically always an open source alternative.

    SourceForge.net search: disk junk clean

SourceForge.net search: disk defrag consolidate consolidation

    SourceForge.net search: recover recovery salvage

I didn't see anything I wanted, I have used SourceForge before. Again, I want people to recommend me decent software.

Yet again there's alternatives for that:

    SourceForge.net Multimedia section

    Open Source Alternative: Multimedia/Audio section

I don't really want an alternative, but thanks.

Yet more choices, not only free also less bloated:

    * QuickTime Alternative

    * K-Lite Mega Codec Pack: to play damn near everything, includes Media Player Classic.

I used too use both, but they're not open-source, are they? Also QTAlternative is illegal.

Dial-a-fix is one of a kind in my opinion, it makes life so easy! The only free alternatives I know of currently is to do it all manually via fixes available on Microsoft's Support Site, or get fix-it documentation and .reg files from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and http://dougknox.com/. Or get help from other Windows Tip sites and forums, or this forum.

HijackThis has alternatives, are they worth using I don't know and that would be a question better answered by a malware removal expert. Unless Trend Micro totally f's up HijackThis in the future I won't put much weight in alternatives just yet.

Unlocker has alternatives listed on it's homepage, and the differences.

Dizzy is unique, I hadn't heard of it until following your link, and don't know any alternatives.

I see. So there aren't really alternatives for this lot then...

Yes as it uses some file sorting methods to improve disk access times (as a result the first run will be quite slow but following runs will be fast). I've found it does a better job that Windows defrag and does it faster. It's also safe as it actually uses Windows defrag API's so can't do any more damage than Windows defrag.

    I see. Well thank you.

  14. I dont know about opera but I saw a statistic from mozilla that said that only like 40% of the people who try firefox keep it. That means that there is something about firefox that is making people want to use IE, so if there are people out there improving IE by adding good features than thats a good thing.

I still use IE7 and have no desire to use firefox again until v3 comes out and even then I probably wont swich unless it has some killer features.

Personally, been using FF for a long time, and I love it.

  15. defraggers, breaking systems? never in my life have I seen that happen

all defragmenting does, is fix fragmented files.. it's not dangerous at all

and yes, I would say using registry cleaners is a little more for 'advanced' users.. since cleaning out the wrong registry entries can ruin your computer. you should always be reading through the scanned registries and make sure they aren't needed by your system before deleting

though, most registry cleaners these days enable you to back up your registry before fixing anything..

so it's really not a problem

    No CCleaners registry cleaner, lol.

Yes, you have to be careful when using registry cleaners. They might cause a lot of troubles, if you delete wrong entries. But, cleaning a registry that got plenty of "errors", can give a major performance boost.

Oh yes, as a last resort, I have seen it fix systems. But thats rare form what I have seen.

  16. My head just exploded

It was a tad complicated. Basically, where I posted elsewhere in the forum I had to.

 A mastery of the English Language isn't essential on these forums, as long as you can spout bullsh*t in defense of your own name :lol:

Hardly bulls**t. If you used your brain, you could understand it.
