Moderators TwistedMetal Posted July 16, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 16, 2015 I really like the RTM version of Windows 10, but I haven't found any security suite apps that work with 10 except for Comodo Security Suite. But each build you install, it breaks the app totally. You have to uninstall it and then reinstall it. I found using Windows Defender and Windows 10 Firewall Control app works the best so far until the apps are updated to Windows 10. Sadly Microsoft Edge is still crap, it's very sluggish, and slow at times. I still use Firefox though. The version the Windows Insiders are using is 10240, which is the RTM version. HP, Dell, and so on are using to put in their new machines to sell. You can except to have updates on day one, updates are getting ready to roll out soon for testing. Moderators Andavari Posted July 22, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 22, 2015 If Microsoft is going to be updating drivers automatically with no opt-out I can only foresee issues galore. For example I would never willingly download a graphics display driver from Windows Update. I wonder how PC gamers will deal with that and the display drivers possibly going foul. Edit: I forgot about printer/scanner drivers, etc. Hmm, will DLLHell of old become DriverHell of new?

Graphics drivers on Microsoft Update have historically been something to completely avoid. Although it's very interesting it happened before the OS was officially released. I wonder if any device/hardware companies would take Microsoft to court for causing driver issues to their customers, like Nvidia for instance, etc. Anyone that has Aladdin/Sentinel HASP License Manager installed which allows you to use some licensed software be prepared for Microsoft Update to break the hell out of that too. I've seen where updating it makes it impossible to use some licensed software that relies upon a specific version of Aladdin/Sentinel HASP License Manager. Moderators rridgely Posted July 29, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 29, 2015 I upgraded my laptop and my gaming computer to windows 10 today. The laptop went really smooth. Its a dell ultrabook and all the hardware just worked. The desktop not so much. The AMD drivers were completely messed up and even after trying to manually install them it still crashes. That may not be microsofts fault though. I'm not sure how I feel about the os overall. I don't really like its aesthetics very much. I really don't like the window borders or icons very much at all. It is more stable than that beta version I tried a few week ago and its running fine so far. I wish there was a way to put the search bar back in the start menu. Its just a waste of space to have that there all the time.

Winapp2.ini
the reduced size of the borders on its own is enough to make me want it. I'll be holding off until the first few rounds of bugfixes are out, but I'm excited (though I agree on the icons, i think many of them are a step back) winapp2.ini additions thread winapp2.ini github
TheWebAtom
Upgraded my five year old desktop last night. Haven't run into any considerable problems, though I did do a clean install on a new hard drive rather than attempting to upgrade from 7. I agree on the icons, they look horrible. The rest of the UI doesn't look too bad, though the window borders look a bit weird in Chrome without any opacity. Like Windows 7, it still doesn't play nice with my network. Say what you want about Mac, but at least the "it just works" is an accurate statement when it comes to setting up NAS drives and media sharing. I'm Shane. Moderators mta Posted July 30, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 30, 2015 Thanks for those links @hazelnut, I got sick of waiting for Windows Updates to kick in so I downloaded the Media Creation Tool and it all went nicely. 3.3GiB download, burnt ISO to DVD, painless install. Initially lost my dual head but got it back and a few very minor tweaks needed. But, overall, a solid 9/10 The only casualty was my 3rd party start menu replacement StartIsBack which I'll have to wait for an update from them - cause even the 'improved' Win10 Start Menu is not nice. The Cortana Search box is good, bloody huge though, which is why I changed it to an icon. In fact, since Win8, I use the Start Menu less and just type the first few characters of what it want and pow, there it is. One slight cautionary note; don't use the Express Settings during the install, almost all of their default settings were not to my liking. Moderators Andavari Posted July 30, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 30, 2015 (edited) ...I downloaded the Media Creation Tool and it all went nicely. It's good to hear a success story. I've had a couple of friends asking me already for help with it (even though I will likely never dabble with it anytime soon). One has a trashed system from the update but I declined to help. Willy2
- From the "How to Geek" link: "Not only has Microsoft spent less time stabilizing and bug-testing the release version of Windows than ever, .............. " Doesn't sound too well. So, the users are meant to help MS to iron out the bugs ? I guess I'll only install it on my other laptop I rarely use. But I am not in a hurry to do so. - @MTA: the "Media Creation Tool" didn't do anything funny with your system ? Did it clean up all the extra things it installed (I saw some extra folders were created). - Or is MS going to roll out more than one download version ? No, I am not going to waste a DVD on this download. A USB stick will be useable more than once.
