Peppermint OS

If it's only going to be for testing why not use a reusable CDRW or DVDRW disc.

Well, the only fully functional RW CD I have has my only fully functional Ubuntu 9 burned on it. And I don't have the Ubuntu 9 ISO either so I cannot wipe that out.

Do you mean you're PC won't boot from it?

I've got the Macrium Rescue Disk on USB, and my PC won't boot from it automatically.

And there's no option in the BIOS to include a USB port as a boot option. But, if I break into the boot sequence with the escape key, the USB option is there in the boot options along with the ROM and Hard Drives.

And it boots fine when chosen manually.

No, this is a very different case. My Windows 7 would boot perfectly, but I tried to install "Damn Small Linux" to a USB. I would boot from the USB, it would boot that I can see the penguin logo but whenever, I continue on what I thought was the standard method by pressing ENTER, it would just go unresponsive and I don't know why.

I use Universal-USB-Installer-v1.7.6 for embedding portable operating systems to a USB, it supports another version of Damn Small Linux, different from the one I got so it may not fully support that but unless I explore it further, I could be wrong.

I love computer maintenance tasks.

Some of my favorite programs:

Wordpad -basic word processing

Notepad - temporary clipboard and basic scripting module

Windows Media Player 12- video, music and online radio player

Windows Media Center - live TV, local FM radio

CCleaner- handy computer maintenance tool

If something fails to work after using the registry cleaner, use SYSTEM RESTORE.

That is very interesting. I wonder how Ubuntu 10 does on it? There is also a Mint version (not peppermint), etc. They used to have a lindows version before MS sued & they changed to linspire.

Will have to keep that in mind. Thanks for the heads up on peppermint!

It's just the English/American keyboard thing I think, and I didn't delve into Peppermint to see if I could change it, which wouldn't have stuck if I could, as it's running from a disk.

I might stick my Ubuntu disk in and see if that's the same, as I can't remember having the same problem with it.

Your post has been removed MrDon. It had nothing to do with the topic we are discussing. Please keep on topic instead of rambling on about your own experiences of something else completely.

Yes, it's just a change in the keyboard that's required. Usually accessed via the tools bit, it's easy to do.

Am having a flashback.

I have just successfully edited the shutdown code for Puppy 5 on USB so that it will not save changes. Was intriguing even if it was only a tiny edit, copped from someone else. First thing like that I have done since ####, well never mind. :P

Wouldn't have tried it for any money in windows, but after all this entire OS, with the USB stick included, cost about as much as a gallon of gasoline. And is redo-able. Another advantage of these small free OSs, easier to experiment.

The CCleaner SLIM version is always released a bit after any new version; when it is it will be HERE :-)

Installing these things onto a USB stick seems to be the way to go.

Unlike burning the ISO to a CD where you can't make any customisations stick, such as setting a "British English" keyboard.

Assuming here of course that you can change and save settings to a USB installed Linux. Don't know as I've never tried it.

Yes you can. I installed Puppy to a 2 gb USB stick, had to format it to ext2 before my bios would recognize it as bootable, and did not use the frugal install method. Did that from the iso on the cd...it includes GParted and an installer to put Puppy on a USB.

By default, that Puppy setup saves changes at shutdown. Was thinking, what if I install one of these apps, which I never heard of, and don't like it? So went looking and found a way to prevent saving changes, both during a session and at shutdown.

This is the LINK to prevent a save at shutdown. The post by sc0ttman works. He didn't say it, but that code line,

/usr/sbin/snapmergepuppy /initrd/pup_ro1 /initrd/pup_rw

is in there more than once, and I commented all of them out if they looked like they were going to "do" something. :P

Didn't have enough courage to try the method for offering a choice at shutdown. Thats for another day.

And I'm glad I did that. Tried installing several things and didn't like them. So, not stuck with them. If any are worth keeping, I'll just change the code back and keep them (haven't tried that yet, tho).

Like Rridgely and Andavari, these aren't going to be my primary OSs, but they are fun and can be useful...I keep telling myself that...over and over...

I now have Peppermint OS on my USB. I used Universal-USB-Installer-v1.7.6 to embed it there. If I boot from the USB, I can use Peppermint.

I like it well. But the major thing that drags it down for me is that it doesnt have Open Office apps preinstalled unlike so many other Linux distros. I am willing to swap my Ubuntu 9 for it, if only it has Open Office.

But what I really like most from it is I can use Internet from Firefox 4 Beta on it, thank God. However, when my Internet is periodically slow, it would barely load websites. I can access the homepage and go to the search results and image searches on Google but beyond that, it just takes forever to load

But if my Internet is fast, its doing well, loads websites and I can watch Youtube. And that is all from an OS running on a USB.

I'm gonna make a Oracle Virtual Machine version of pepermint when I get to work, where I have a cable internet and not a 3g network so as to not take 4 hours to download :P

ADVICE FOR USING CCleaner'S REGISTRY INTEGRITY SECTION

DON'T JUST CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT'S CHECKED OFF.

Do your Registry Cleaning in small bits (at the very least Check-mark by Check-mark)

ALWAYS BACKUP THE ENTRY, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL BREAK IF YOU DON'T.
